Custom Horse Breeds update

Not so much of an update, as a post to say that I'm shelving this project until whenever inspiration strikes.

I've spent a couple of months now, on and off, looking into it, playing around with it and I did manage to get it to a semi-working state, but, because modding isn't my passion and I just like figuring things out, I know when to finally call it quits after running into a wall repeatedly.

If anyone wants to carry the rest of the torch for getting these custom breeds to a working state, lmk, we can talk privately.

As for what's next? I have a couple of things I worked on last year in September and November that I need to release, but held off on, because I was more dedicated to trying to get the custom breeds to work.

RIP, CmarNYC

I’m very sad to report that Sims 3 and 4 creator CmarNYC passed away in October 2023. For 15 years, Simmers benefited from Cmar’s long-honed computing skills as she created much-loved modders’ and players’ tools, including the Sims 3 and 4 MorphMakers and Skininators, the TS4 SimRipper, the Sims 3 XCAS core mod, and many CAS sliders. She was also a contributor to S4PE, which likely was used by creators you rely on. Without Cmar’s work, the Sims franchise would have had a much less rich array of mods and custom content. She will be greatly missed.

As well as Sims, Cmar loved cats, and donations are suggested to the ASPCA, the TinyKittens Society, or an animal-related charity near you.

Since I have some time to research stuff and my Tumblr finally works correctly, are there any guides that anyone is looking for? I'm happy to investigate whether it's easy enough and put something together, drop your requests in the replies, I'll have a look and see what's possible. I'm still mostly focusing on pets, but I'm happy to look into different things as well. To give a heads up - I'm not going to put together a guide on custom horse presets, sliders, etc., as that is too much work, especially for someone starting out in modding and I rather patiently wait for Cmar to recover and update their program. If it does come to it and there is no update, I'll be happy to look into it, but as far as I can tell, it's not very simple using just S4S.

Lately I feel like I've been hit by a truck and have an endless supply of dreams that ruin my sleep, absolutely dislike this.

It's definitely stopped me from doing a lot of things I usually manage in my day, because my sleep is getting pushed further out into my do things time.

Nevertheless, I'm slowly working through a couple of brushes for brindle dogs, it's a pain, because I've worked through 4 iterations of 10 different brushes and they're definitely not like I'd like them to be, but that's okay, it's my relaxation project at this point.

I'm still sitting on the custom breeds, but I'm having a bit of an issue with it, so I'll have to take my time to figure out what I can do to fix it. The biggest issue is that instead of being able to set one preset to work, it's throwing 5 different swatches for different head presets at me and refusing to cooperate, other than that, the only other issues are the coat and the hair not behaving correctly. Those two are minor, as I've managed to get them working on individual edits of different breeds, but, nonetheless, I have my hands pretty full.

Oh well, figured it would only be fair to update people who were interested in it.

Guide updated 24/10/2023: At the end of the guide, where my relatively subtle explanation for the brush parts is I've updated the B1 field - 0 is a non-rotating brush, 2 is a rotating brush.

Hi all, it's been a while.

I've updated all four of my guides to promote better Hash ID generating practice. The way I did it, in theory fine, but easy enough to match someone else by accident.

As in the updated guides, I'll mention it here - please use your creator name when generating your hash ID: "[YourCreatorName/Blogname]TutorialCustomFurCoat1". This will help generate a more unique Hash ID that is less likely to ever match someone else's. Thanks to Mizore Yukii for this advice, from the Creator's Musings Discord.

It only took me 3 and a half months to get to this point, all because I overlooked a tuning file. At least I know that it works and there is hope for custom, preset breeds.

So yeah, custom preset breeds, very likely possible, whether I can fix how much it bugged out is another question.

Hey there, first of all I love your tutorials. ♥ Second, I've got a question. :'D Do you know if there's a way to make an overlay for horses as an accessoire? like just a coat that sits on the horse like one layer but we can put it on and off as an accessoire? (thinking about the coloured powder horses get on for photoshoots or glitter. it would only be a layer on the horses normal coat - just as an example - but we wouldn't want it on there forever yk) Maybe you have an idea how to. I'm very new to cc making for S4, so I'm clueless. All I know comes from you. ♥ Thank you so much for teaching us!

Unfortunately, I'm not that big on CC creation, it's fun figuring things out, but I don't have the artistic touch that a lot of people in the community do, so I just like providing resources after tinkering with the files.

I think in your case, you could look into editing the saddle pads for horses and turning them into an accessory.

The bulk of the job will have to be editing the images (diffuse, shadow and specular, but in theory, you could just make the latter two empty and skip it, I'm not entirely sure though.)

The part that I can provide you with is this:

You'd just be changing the tag for BodyType, which should in theory affect where it shows up.

Remember to have a second mods folder set up for quick testing.

Beyond that, my biggest recommendation will be this thread on the S4S website. It has a lot of guides available on a step-by-step basis.

Also, test every step, start by creating a CAS standalone and from there as you change things, etc, save and test. It's a bit of work when you're starting out, but it is the fastest way to get a good hang of S4S, just playing around with it.

Updated to reflect an issue with the coat in-game, where it disappears when zooming out.

The fix is to export as L8, but also to select "generate mipmaps". After that, it should behave correctly in-game.

Hello! First, I want to thank you for the custom HQ coat tutorial - it was very easy to follow and I've been having a great time remaking my favourite horses' coats. I've run into a weird problem with the coats, though - they're great in CAS and up close, but if I zoom out they disappear and go back to just the base coat. Is that something you've seen with them, and if so, do you know of a fix for it?

I've actually noticed this just today, I don't recall my first coats having issues in-game when I tested them though, which is odd, I'll try to compare and see whether there's something I've done differently if I still can find the files.

I'm currently looking into it because it doesn't make a whole lot of sense that it would happen.

I'll drop you a DM once I find out whether this is fixable, I assume it is.

Info from Pure Winter: "There are TWO versions of this mod. You can use one or both. The default version (shown above) is an equipable tail item that applies the shine effect. The second version is a sock item that does the same thing. (Represented with a hoof icon on the catalogue graphic.) If you use both packages, you will get six new catalogue selections, but it makes it the most versatile in being compatible with other horse mods, so you don't have to choose between this or something else you love. It even captures the skybox light and changes colors and tints at the brightest points, most noticeable during sunrise/set. It is automatic. You do not need to paint custom shadow stencils onto your horses, but you can for a more dramatic effect of course! This requires minervamagicka's horse retexture mod to achieve the example screenshots, but will still work without it! "
