The first meeting between unknown friends

[Era] SM Rookies [Word Count] 991

Acer has been with the company for about 2 years already. It was a big adjustment moving to Korea where he had no known family when he was just 13, but he managed to survive thanks to the odd jobs he picked up.

Now he was the ripe age of 15 and SM had told him about a temporary group that they wanted to debut him in, SM Rookies. The concept was rather simple, a bunch of soon-to-be idols thrown into one group where they can have a taste test on what an idol-life is really like without being legally binded to it. On paper, it sounded amazing. Acer would be able to take on mini versions of idol activities with other trainees that he could potentially be put into a group with. However, after he agreed to it, his mind pointed out his Korean skills or lack thereof.

Acer, up to this point, was able to fly under the radar and avoid a lot of speaking. It wasn’t that his Korean was bad, he had been told multiple times that he had a good understanding and his accent was the only thing that would give him away. Yet, when under pressure, he faulted.

He had to swallow that fear when he was called to the head office. Acer had been delaying this meeting as much as he could. He wanted to be an idol, yet his brain would mess with him and delay the success he could have.

The cold winter grew harsher by the minute. Despite the two years of experience, Acer always underestimated the winter. So he sported a purple hoodie, skinny jeans and sneakers and ran out of the house after realising he had exactly 30 minutes to get to the SM Building.

The cold air blew against his face, causing him to shiver as he ran towards the train station, the best part of the commute. He loved how it felt, being alone on a train. The thought of just being blissfully unaware of his surroundings with beautiful scenery was enough to make him the happiest boy in the world.

Eventually his stop was reached and he rushed out. 5 minutes left and Acer was sure he could make it if he sprinted. At this point, he was thankful he had taken an interest in parkour as he ended up taking shortcuts that no normal human would. Jumping over fences in alleyways, using the wall to make sharp corners and climbing up on scaffolding when possible.

Eventually he made it to the main office, 3 minutes early, sweating and panting while cursing to himself.

He entered and made his way up to the 10th floor, trying to gather his breath while the lift zoomed up.

As soon as Acer left the lift, his search began for the designated boardroom. He took in his surroundings. Everything looked the same, white walls with plants spread around, small cubicles in the centre seemingly abandoned for the day, the boardrooms separated with tinted glass making it impossible to see into the rooms.

Eventually he made it to the boardroom. He stood outside with his hand touching the doorknob. He gathered what was left of his courage and entered the room.

The room contained a fancy rounded table, spanning the room and seeming to fit at least 6 to 7 people. A large whiteboard was mounted on the wall closest to the door, it seemed too clean for its own good. Plants were scattered around the room, gathering light for the large windows, looking down at the city below. Acer took it in until he saw a boy around his age, looking down at his phone. Acer couldn’t help but feel embarrassed and quickly made his way to sit a few seats away from the boy. The seats themselves were padded on the bottom with the backs being pure plastic.

They sat in silence, until a loud voice spoke out.

“SM Rookies?” Acer turned to the voice, finding it coming from the boy. He had pretty messy hair that was slightly curled that seemed brown, but Acer really couldn’t tell. His eyes shined with expectation, to Acer he looked like a kitten waiting for their food.

“Umm, yeah” Acer stuttered out, before silently cursing himself.

“Cool! I’m Lee Donghyuck, or Haechan, I’m also one of the new additions”

“I’m Yang Min Joon, but please just call me Acer”

“It's nice to meet you! Let’s hope that we have a long-lasting partnership”

As soon as Donghyuck finished, the door opened and 2 men walked in, the high-ups. They explained the concept in more detail and announced that they would debut on the 17th of July with a few activities needing to be done before then as a celebration. They quickly left after spending only a few minutes, leaving the door open for us.

“Well, that’s good news” Donghyuck yawned,

“Yeah, totally worth the 30 minute commute for a 3 minute talk” The both laughed.

“Oh Acer, what’s your number?” with that they exchanged numbers, with Acer naming Donghyuck as ‘☀️이동혁☀️’ on his phone.

Both boys made their way down to the ground floor, talking about various things that came to mind, with Donghyuck asking every question.

“I can’t believe you're older than me, '' Donghyuck said defeatedly.

“It’s only by a year. It could be worst” Acer laughed.

“I guess, but you’re just so short that it makes me look way older than normal” He laughed out.

”Oi, I’ll get my growth spurt….eventually”

“You can always dream, even if it won’t happen” They continued to walk out of the building with Acer making sure to give him a light punch to the shoulder while they both smiled from ear to ear.

They waved good-bye at the front and walked opposite directions. With a new friend at his disposal, Acer began the long, cold, trip home with a smile plastered on his face.

Acer’s relationship with NCT127

Taeyong

BEFORE DEBUT

They both hated each other at the start.

Taeyong often would yell at Acer during practice for not putting his all into the work and having a lack of discipline (mainly due to how Acer would present himself and his personality).

At first, Taeyong would softly scold Acer, however it slowly grew to outright anger as he perceived that Acer was doing it on purpose/didn’t care about the position he was in because of how relaxed he always seemed.

Taeyong often thought Acer was taking the program as a joke and making everyone look bad as a result, which only caused more yelling while Acer stood there not knowing the right words for the situation.

Acer would often cry after these interactions (normally by himself) and it got to a point where just being around Taeyong made him anxious

AFTER DEBUT

Unknowingly to Acer, Taeyong saw how different Acer acted towards him compare to everyone else once Acer joined the group, which did greatly upset him as a leader

However, Taeyong’s harshness towards Acer didn’t stop, but Acer got better at hiding how he felt towards Taeyong

This went on for a while, and it wasn’t until Donghyuck got involved where Taeyong realised what impact it was having on Acer and ended up regretting it hard.

From there, Taeyong would try to fix things with Acer (which started from being less harsh to trying to talk to him), but Acer would never reciprocate it. It wasn’t until after a few tips from Donghyuck and a few mysterious stuffed animals being laid on Acer’s bed by Taeyong, did Acer finally reciprocate Taeyong’s feelings, however it still took months of slowly walking through the mess until they finally fixed it and Taeyong apologised thoroughly.

Since then, Taeyong ended up adopting a motherly sense towards Acer and they have becoming pretty good friends (just not as good as some other members)

Taeil

BEFORE DEBUT

Both of them were barely talked at the start, especially as Acer ended up gaining a friend group within SM Rookies and never thought to expand outside his comfort zone

Acer also saw Taeil as intimidating, he basically out played Acer in almost everything when it came to idol life.

Taeil thought Acer was cute, much like many of the other younger members.

AFTER DEBUT

Once Acer moved into the group and realised he was sharing a room with Taeil, he almost pulled from the group on the spot

Taeil welcome him with open arms and tried to make Acer feel comfortable, however the awkward tension between them grow exponentially

However, as Acer grew into the group, so did his friendship with Taeil and it started with Acer asking Taeil for help with his singing.

Since then, both of them will often practice their vocals together and sing makeshift songs based on anything they know.

Taeil will often tease Acer through singing some of the songs they made together, but it almost always ends up with an impromptu singing class no matter where they are.

Yet, Whenever Acer would try to do skin-ship with Taeil, it almost always fails and because of that both of them will rarely participate in skin-ship with each other (unless it is a victory hug).

Johnny

BEFORE DEBUT

When they first met, Acer was scared due to the massive height difference

For the first few days, Acer would avoid him at all costs, however (little did Acer know) Johnny was stubborn and kept trying to get a sentence out of him.

It wasn’t until Johnny walked in on Acer in his room and saw the amount of stuffed animals he had.

“wow, you have a lot of these huh?” Johnny asked in English, while holding up a plush cinnamon roll, “Hey, put him down!” Acer replied back.

That interaction ended up snowballing into many late night conversations in Acer’s house and eventually became very good friends.

AFTER DEBUT

They haven’t changed at all, whenever they both need to talk, they will often schedule a time where they go into the roof and talk about anything and everything

Acer often listens to Johnny’s woes and tries to provide help when needed, and sometimes Acer will talk about his problems.

Johnny often gives gifts to Acer whenever he comes across something that he believes Acer may enjoy

They also go on mini-trips together and love to take photos together as if they were a couple. Acer loves to display these on his area of the wall despite Johnny (fake) hating it.

They both hype each other up whenever they are competing on a show (however if they are opposite teams, suspect both of them to bully each other hard)

Yuta

BEFORE DEBUT

Acer and Yuta ended up bonding super fast and became Acer’s 2nd friend in Korea

Despite both of their sports being quite different, Yuta found it fascinating that Acer could do parkour, and would ask Acer to show him every single day during any SM Rookie activity, and then would bully Acer when doing a very basic move.

However, a few months in, Acer did show Yuta his skills, which impressed Yuta.

Yet, despite this peacefulness, both were very competitive and would often try to outperform each other in their respective skills.

Other members have said that Acer and Yuta used to watch soccer together and wouldn’t stop yelling at each other (and the TV) to prove whose team was better.

AFTER DEBUT

They no longer watch soccer together after yelling so much that they both lost their voices, however will often joke about it to each other

Instead, they resorted to playing soccer on any free days they had to help them cope and let out any frustration that may have while during comebacks

They both love doing skin-ship with each other and will often show their love of each other through it (even if it means almost killing Acer through Yuta’s very rough hugs)

Yuta doesn’t play games often with Acer, however does backseat game him and will often annoy Acer through questioning why he doesn’t play his JRPG’s with Japanese audio (to which he plays off as a joke on camera). Yet, when Acer does play with Japanese audio, Yuta will always watch him play and enjoys talking about the story with Acer.

Doyoung

BEFORE DEBUT

They started off quite friendly to each other, Doyoung often was the first to greet Acer in the mornings with his classic smile to which Acer would reciprocate.

They never considered each other friends, but both did try to put in effort into their relationship in case they were to land in the same group.

However, Acer was jealous of Doyoung’s voice and personality, he seemed to have everything put together, while Acer was still struggling.

AFTER DEBUT

It started off the same as during SM Rookies, however a few years of distance did cause some awkward moments between them, but they knew how to laugh it off

However, one day their relationship soured dramatically and nowadays you will never see them in the same room together unless someone else is around.

Many of the members don’t know how their relationship turned this way, but considering they didn’t fight and still acted like best friends on camera it wasn’t worth trying to fix.

A few members have tried to help, but it often does cause both, Doyoung and Acer, to just pretend until they got off their backs.

They both keep their guard up around each other, but neither of them consider their relationship as being enemies, more just acquaintances who will work together to reach a similar goal

Jaehyun

BEFORE DEBUT

They didn’t really talk to each other due to both being quite quiet, but had a mutual understanding of what their goals were.

The first time they really interacted was through the formation of ‘foreign swagger’ where Acer and Jaehyun would often interact due to johnny deciding to make a ‘business group chat’ for the group.

However, both wouldn’t really speak to each other that much and would just communicate through the group chat (mainly because Jaehyun did think Acer was mute and thought it would be easier for him)

Soon enough they became pretty good friends as the group ended up going on many ‘business trips’ together (aka whatever SM schedule for the english speakers)

AFTER DEBUT

Once Acer debut, they relationship mainly stayed the same, but they ended up talking a little bit more and relied less on the group chat

Their friendship spiked when Acer accidentally walked in Jaehyun’s room (thinking it was his) and saw Jaehyun listening to music that was slightly similar to Acer’s style

Since then both members still continue to have barely any conversations outside of any on camera activity, but Jaehyun will often invite Acer to come and listen to music with him (which is some of Acer’s favourite times).

Their communication focuses on unspoken words and will often use body language to tell each other things.

Jungwoo

BEFORE DEBUT

They didn’t get to talk all that much, due to Acer debuting days before Jungwoo joined SM Rookies.

AFTER DEBUT

When Jungwoo joined NCT127, Acer was quite closed off to him and often found the older male quite threatening due to how easily Jungwoo was able to make friends.

Acer only ever responded in mumbles towards Jungwoo, which Jungwoo both found cute and annoying at times (also at times Jungwoo felt as if Acer was disrespectful).

However, Jungwoo made it his mission to become friends with him and used Donghyuck to do so.

Both Acer and Donghyuck were annoyed at this and would often complain about it to each other, but Donghyuck still honoured Jungwoo’s word. Acer, in a way, felt as if Jungwoo was looking down on him like what someone would do to a child.

Because of this, Acer never had the urge to try and put in effort into the relationship, but tried to act friendly towards Jungwoo when in front of a camera.

Mark

BEFORE DEBUT

Unsurprisingly they became quite good friends once they met and ended up introducing Acer to many of the other members of ‘foreign swaggers’.

Despite Acer disliking the name they chose of the English speaking group, Mark was able to persuade Acer to join (with a bit of help from Johnny)

During the early days, both members would often go out and walk to a local arcade (sometimes joint by the younger members) and play the hell out of dance dance revolution

Mark and Acer also loved to prank Donghyuck as much as possible

AFTER DEBUT

Once Mark debuted they started hanging out less and they only form of communication between the two came from mainly text messages

Mark was extremely happy once Acer debuted and try as much as possible to continue their traditions

However, it proved difficult with they’re schedules, though they still find time to annoy Donghyuck as much as possible

Now, Acer will tend to come to Mark’s room to listen to him play guitar and have an impromptu karaoke time.

Mark often hopes that Acer will join SuperM, despite knowing that it’s unlikely

Haechan

BEFORE DEBUT

Donghyuck was the first friend Acer ever made in Korea and met through a meeting in 2014 just before joining SM Rookies

Since that original meeting, both became inseparable and with Donghyuck following Acer everywhere and vise versa

He helped Acer develop his skills in both Korean and idol skills, Acer knew Donghyuck was made for this life

However, despite the relationship looking perfect, they often got into many arguments due to (mainly) miscommunications, however they are able to overcome it and become stronger

AFTER DEBUT

They now constantly tease each other along with Mark and the Dream members and Acer will often flirt with Donghyuck to try and pull a reaction, to which he retaliated with either flirting back or using Acer’s Korean name to annoy him (if there’s no other way to annoy Acer)

Despite all the pranking, disputes and annoyance, both have their sweet moments, both on camera and off camera

Many of the members will awe at them when they are having their sweet moments, with some of them having pictures that they can use against the two later on.

However, they still have many arguments that ranging from passive to very passionate.

Acer’s Personality

Mentions of Depression and Anxiety, so be careful when continuing past this point.

This is to just give a little more insight to how he works (it also may help explain some future posts), but as Acer evolves throughout his journey, so will this list (but basically all of it is set in stone for the far off future).

DOESN'T TAKE ANYTHING SERIOUSLY

Most of his friends in Australia didn't take anything too seriously and Acer learnt how to be more chill through them, which causes Acer to say things that he doesn't stand by as a joke (such as saying he hates SM) and take life much more chill than his other members, knowing that such an life deserves to be appreciated.

However, He can often come off as irresponsible and potentially lazy to others.

This is also the main reason he hates being called by his Korean name, he doesn’t feel like it suits him (though his parents will say otherwise)

Acer is also very irritable on occasions, which is why many members like to tease him

BEING VERY SHY

When around new people, Acer tends to not speak unless it’s needed and often keeps to himself until he can understand the dynamics around him.

Once he has grown into the group, Acer becomes more outspoken, but reverts to being shy when around people he doesn't know or around upper management.

Other idols often believe he is mute due to how much Acer doesn’t talk, but often get surprised when Donghyuck or any trusted NCT member gets into the mix

FLIRTATIOUS

Acer has a habit of making comments that can come off as flirting around members he is comfortable with.

He loves skin-ship, but he knows that not everyone likes what he does so he tries to tone it down as much as possible

He loves to openly share his love for his members, whenever thats through gifts, skin-ship or words. If theres a way to show love, he will do it.

HE CARES

When it comes to his appearances, Acer cares

He'll often search for the latest trends in clothing and try to improve his personality to fit the standard set for idols.

He constantly compares himself to other popular idols his age

Even if his members or company tell him not too, he will look through comments on videos he is in when bored and try to improve anything they say.

He thrives on praise and knowing that there's people who hate him really hurts him despite knowing it shouldn't.

Luckily he hasn't been caught going through comments yet, but he fears what his members or company might say or do to him.

THE CALM ONE

Acer plays the role of being the calm one within the storm when around the NCT127 and will often try to calm down the group if anything happens to them

However when around any member of NCT Dream, he will often start the play fights and not be afraid of joking around them, as long as he trusts the members around him.

In NCT he tries to be a member that people can rely on, which includes listening to other member woes. He tries to stay open minded and available for talks as much as he can.

However, Acer can feel burdened with the information and he can often feel alone with no one to talk too. It has caused him to breakdown, especially when combined with reading comments.

Normally, he deals with his breakdowns by himself, only a few people know about how emotional Acer can be

This section and the he cares section has made him question if he should continue idol life or move far away from it.

ARTISY

Acer isn't much of a fan of sports, but he knows enough about the popular sports in Australia.

He prefers to be alone with some music and art supplies, even if he isn't that good at art, but he still enjoys making pieces even if they are bad.

However, every now and again, you can see Acer playing soccer by himself (or sometimes with Yuta) to help with home sickness. (Yuta will often play easy on Acer, knowing that Acer doesn’t have too much skill in it)

Acer also uses parkour as another outlet to let out any emotions and will often try to draw images on google maps just by running and jumping.

SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICT

While Acer may not be too involved on V LIVE or instagram, he is the most active on twitter.

While he may not have his own twitter, he spends most of his time posting to the NCT twitter, where he answer questions, post photos and short videos of him or his members or screenshots of his score from certain games.

CARING

Acer generally cares about the people around him despite have a resting face that makes him look angry.

He is very expressive and people can tell when he really cares about someone, or when he is feeling certain emotions (despite how hard he may try to hide it)

When he can tell someone is having a bad day and will try to help them if he knows them, or will at least try to make their day better.

Due to his past, he tends to be careful who he helps and will only help those who he knows personally.
