Chapters: 7/7 Fandom: Young Royals (TV 2021) Rating: General Audiences Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Simon Eriksson/Wilhelm Characters: Simon Eriksson, Wilhelm (Young Royals), Erik (Young Royals), Kristina (Young Royals), Ludvig (Young Royals), Micke Eriksson Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Non-Royal (Young Royals), Non-Royal Wilhelm (Young Royals), Summer Vacation, Fluff, Teen Romance, Alternate Universe - Neighbors, bad brother erik, Bad Parent Kristina (Young Royals), Summer Romance, No Plot/Plotless, No beta (we die like Erik), Boys In Love, Boys Kissing, POV Simon Eriksson, mention of bullying, Coming of Age, Implied/Referenced Homophobia, Wilhelm Needs a Hug (Young Royals), Simon Eriksson Needs a Hug Summary:
Simon and Wille have been neighbours for ever. However they have never talked to each other. But during the summer holidays they are both bored to death and decide to hang out a bit. Maybe they can become friends. Or maybe even more than that...
“Why have we never done this before?” Wilhelm wondered after a while. “Done what?” “Met up. Like, we have always been neighbours, I always thought you were pretty cool, you are pretty cool, but we have never even really talked to each other.” “You think I’m pretty cool?” Simon teased and showed Wilhelm’s shoulder. Although he should have known better than doing so, because now he knew how Wilhelm’s fucking shoulder felt under his hand, a discovery Simon definitely wouldn’t replay on repeat in his head once he was laying alone in bed. Shit.

Favorite non-Wilmon ship?
Roth and Stella. I don’t know why, but I really like it. Even though I still think that Stella/Friederika is very sweet, too.

I so desperately want to read a fic where Erik lives but Wille still ultimately learns about the role he played in the abusive, homophobic traditions. Show me Erik having to face the messed up bullshit he did, the messed up bullshit he likely assumed Wille would also endure in his initiation and did not warn him about—and show me him grappling with it in light of his beloved baby brother being queer.

"Now that Young royals is over..."
"Bye young royals "
"After young royals ended..."
I'm reading this alle the time and it's starting to annoy me.
Because YOUNG ROYALS IS NOT OVER!!!
Actually, it has only just started.
Just think about other fandoms, Harry Potter for example. The books are, what?, twenty years old now? Almost.
And the fandom is still alive and growing.
Or the Lord of the Rings. It's 70 f*cking years old. 70!!
And it's far from dead.
So no, young royals is NOT over.
There aren’t going to be any new episodes, any new promotion pics or interviews.
But that doesn't mean it is over.
The characters are out there, they are still alive and they will be as long as we keep them alive.
Unless we let this fandom die by stopping to love this characters, this story, this work of art, it is not over.
I’m still sad about young royals being over. like sad over losing wilmon hours. I can’t explain it, but even with a happy ending…it feels like a breakup.

I came across this, and it kinda hurts reading it after everything we learned about Erik in s3.
I used to believe that Erik would have had Willes back, no matter what. But the truth is, that EVERY SINGLE TIME we see them talking in s1 Erik reminds Wille of his responsibilities, of how he has to pretend to be someone else, to uphold the facade etc etc.
And in addition to that there is also the possibility of him being homophobic...

I've seen this comparison to Prince Harry quite often now. And it does make Sense. In Sweden Wille will always be a prince.
But here is the thing: Wille is not a Prince of England. He is Prince of Sweden, and therefore only really known in Sweden and maybe the other Scandinavian countries.
Let's be honest: do you know any Scandinavian royals? Because I don't, and I think most people don't know either.
So if Wille moves away and studies abroad, maybe even in the US, it is very likely that nobody knows and recognises him.
Renouncing the throne would not set Wilhelm free
A question asked of those in the Young Royals fandom: Are you Team Monarchy or Team Abdication?
For those who wish to see Wilhelm fulfil his birthright, the desire comes from him being able to find peace with himself and thus the role, and setting an example by living as the first openly queer monarch in Swedish Royal history. That it denies August the position also helps this argument.
For those who wish to see Wilhelm renounce the thrown, the desire comes from wishing him to be free from the shackles of unasked for expectations, and emancipated from the pressure that crushes down on his wellbeing, his romantic relationship, and his ability to live a "normal" teen and adult life.
But here's the thing: Wilhelm is marked for life. Refusing to become King, and removing himself from all royal duties and the Crown itself, will not lead him to become a "normal" person.
There is a real world, contemporary example of a prince forsaking his duties and being no freer from the media circus that haunts him—Prince Harry of the British Royal Family. The details of his conflict and departure from his royal duties are widely publicised, no less than in his own autobiography. To be sure, the pressures and scrutiny he has faced growing up are horrific—least of all the media treatment of his mother's death—and the racialised aggression towards his wife is beyond disgusting. It makes total sense that he would want to remove himself and his own family from the shit show that is being a royal in the Internet Age.
But rather than give him and his family the peaceful life he seems to crave, the media fire has only intensified. How much of this is driven my him I can't say; but the point is, making an effort to step away form his expectations has not freed him.
And so, to Wilhelm. He can chose to renounce the thrown, and he can choose not to become King, but he will always, always, be Prince Wilhelm. Unless he were to completely cut himself off from society, run away into a forest and never be seen again, he will forever be marked as a Prince.
Wille has also stated that he actually likes the monarchy. Who would he even be outside of it? He can't just get a job in a bakery or be a bus driver. What would he do? How would he live?
What I want is for Wilhelm to be able to find peace with himself and his place in the world, and based on what we've seen in season 3, I don't think it's more likely that will come to him outside of the monarchy than within it. He is a young, troubled man who needs considerable help and support, and I don't think leaving the framework he's accustomed to—with all of the resources it provides—to walk into an even greater media fire will help him.
I want Wille to be happy and I want him to be free. But moving away from his family and birthright is not, for me, the answer.

now that my brain has somewhat unscrambled itself i have gotten most of my thoughts in order about season 3.
and the first thing i will say is: i loved it.
while it was gutwrenching and polarizing in some ways and i feel that i am entitled to financial compensation for what its done to my mental health, i loved this season for pretty much almost everything it did.
i cannot fault people for having issues with much of the characterization and plot choices made—that’s been the trend during the entire run of the show after all, and imo it’s a testament to the phenomenal way it generates nuance—but i wanted to share my feelings on the recurring opinions i’ve seen about some of these things.
first, i do not blame simon at all for the things he said in the final scene. he’s a child who has been receiving endless verbal and physical harassment on top of all the trauma he is still trying to heal from. he just watched his boyfriend lash out in anger and hurt—while not at him, but it must’ve been a close resemblance of how he might’ve seen micke act. at least, that's what i thought, though i've seen others say otherwise.
and yes, wille is not micke, but just because wille’s source of outbursts is different from micke’s doesn’t mean simon is wrong in drawing similarities. at least he's finally getting a true glimpse into what wille has had to deal with. i've honestly grown to like that they didn't have simon immediately comfort him though; wille's mental illness is not his fault, but it is his responsibility, and instead of pushing a message of unhealthy co-dependence, the show has simon be honest: "but i see that everything hurts you and that hurts me too." and to me, that's so important.
plus, it doesn't make their love any less genuine. wille is a victim of the circumstances; he is not evil, and he is not undeserving of simon. he just has a lot of growing and healing to do, a lot of unlearning and exposure therapy because he's still blinded by privilege even when he tries not to be.
speaking of, i have so many thoughts about wille that i feel like i need to save for its own separate post, but to sum them up: i'll still defend him with my life, and he needs to get the fuck away from that institution.
also, the fact that the responsibility of controlling simon's media decisions was placed solely on wille confused me at first like—why wouldn't they get a professional to give him proper media training?
then i realized, this could be the royal court's way of sabotaging their relationship. they knew that making wille the one to tell simon what he can and cannot say or post would create distance and animosity between them. despite the ramifications of simon's behavior on social media, it seems they still thought it best to have his boyfriend be the one to try to mold him into the system. because they knew that's how they could get rid of him. in conclusion, fuck the royal court (we been knew but still).
one of the standouts this season was their transparency regarding the show's politics. it not only works well with the show's arc (wilmon is public, everything's out in the open now and there's nothing to hide), but also it felt necessary at a time where censorship has been rapidly gaining momentum. it felt so refreshing for these characters to talk so openly about racial discrimination and queerphobia and class disparities, forcing both character and viewer to acknowledge that they exist and you should feel uncomfortable about it.
i don't think i can add much more to what was already said about it—most of the fandom is more eloquent and observant than i am anyway—i just wanted to reinforce how important this season is to myself and the story even with how controversial it is to fans right now. a lot of people may disagree with me and that's fine.

When I first watched this scene I thought it was so horrible because they were just talking past each others.
And they kinda are.
But rewatching it, I realised that it isn't that bad after all.
Wille does understand what Simon wants to tell him. (honestly, I think he agrees with him)
But he also knows that, sadly, talking about LGBTQIA+ rights is still considered a political statemant (even if it shouldn't be)
He tries to explain Simon why he can't do that, he's just not very good at bringing his point across.
Simon doesn't understand him. Or doesn't want to understand him. Or he does, but he is just so frustrated, because he wants to change something. He wants to use the publicity to do something good.
To be honest, Willes conclusion (taking sport and health), was very frustrating, but I don't think they were talking past each other. Both of them, especially Simon, were/was just very unsatisfied/unhappy about the outcome of the conversation/the reality.

No, Simon is 100% right.
The problem is that the royal family has to be neutral, and since Simon is Willes boyfriend (yey!) he is associated with the royal family.
I don't blame Wille for asking him to delete it. I blame the royal court for not giving Simon any media training. It almost feels like they did it on purpose to drive a wedge between them

I am really disappointed in Wille’s parents. Especially at his birthday. Cool, they were nice with Simon and asked him things. It made Wille smile. But they really had to bring Erik up? And then not even talk to Wille? They didn’t ask him questions, nothing about how it’s going at school or how his first solo event was. They just straight up ignored him, talked about how perfect Erik was (compared to Wilhelm we can read between the lines) and Ludvig took mild interest in Simon. You could see how heartbreaking this was becoming to Wille, more and more on his face. And then they have the nerves to be shocked when he snaps.
I cannot wait for him to get out of that institution otherwise he won’t survive this. The only person who was supporting him is Simon and the monarchy is making it impossible for things to work. At this point it’s not even that I think Wille should abdicate because monarchies shouldn’t exist, it’s that Wille needs to abdicate or he’ll rot in there.

Everything will be all right in the end; so if it is not all right, it is not yet the end.
Oscar Wilde
Just a reminder that, however YR S3 ends, whether Wilmon are together or not, whether Wille renounces the throne or not, their life doesn't end with the series.
They are only 17/16, they still have their whole life in front of them. Everything can still change for the better. Nothing is decided, not yet, and not after s3e6.
We don't know what happens after the series, but the characters are out there, in our hands. We can write and imagine how their life is going to be. We can decide what is going to happen to them. They are fictional characters, which means they belong to us fans and we it is up to us what is going to happen to them.
Their story isn't over after season 3. They will be endgame, because I say so. Because WE want them to be.
Maybe they'll break up at the end of the series. So what? They still have 2 years at Hillerska, they still have time when they're going to uni and afterwards. That's plenty of time to figure their shit out and to get back together.
WILMON WILL BE ENDGAME.
PERIOD.

I'm feeling so ambivalent about the last episode of s3
On the on hand I can’t imagine that there's going to be a happy end. Because, honestly, how are they going to resolve all the problems in just one episode? Also, Young royals is a very realistic series and in real life things don't work out sometimes. Love just can’t fix everything.
However I am still very hopeful, since the show was advertised as being about the "choince between love and duty" and Edvin said that love always wins. Also the lake scene hasn't happened yet, and Wille hasn't said "what if I don't want that" ( as an answer to his mother saying he is going to be a fantastic king)
Furthermore the crown on the s3 wallpaper is broken, and up to s3e5 Wille hasn't said or done anything against the monarchy, yet. On the contrary, ha has rather been acting like a puppet of it, even more than in season 1.
But when I'm realistic, I guess they will be together at Valpurgis night "pretending that everything is normal, just for the night"
Then they will swim in the lake and the end scene is probably the scene where they're laying next to the lake, facing each others, crying. I could imagine that they are going to part on good terms. Something like "I love you, but it just doesn’t work, we're too different"
Then it would also make sense that Edvin and Omar cried during the last scene.
It would be hard. It would definitely break my heart. But it would be realistic.

WILLE NEEDS TO GIVE UP THAT FUCKING CROWN!!!!!!!!
Honestly, it would solve so many problems (yes, they still wouldn't know how to communicate, and yes there would still be reporters, but it would be such a relieve for Wille, it would take so much pressure from his shoulders which (hopefully) would make him able to focus more on supporting Simon, being there for him.
