Blast is a mediocre hero
Talk about a controversial opinion! Well, I intend to defend it! With thanks to Eldrich_Void, who heard my rantings out.
This is not an opinion I rushed to. However, it has bothered me a lot that Blast seems to have a real track record for fucking things up. Almost all his endeavours seem to end up cursed in some way.
His evil partner, the ninja village horror he set up, and the way he seems intent on protecting the guy. His estranged son. The two heroes he saved both having serious complexes as a result. The monster he couldn't subdue.
Now that we get to see how he saw the situation on the ground, I think that Flashy Flash's accusing him of being unconscionably hesitant is right.
Under the circumstances, if I were Flash, I'd not trust that pressing that button would summon Blast in a manner timely enough to matter to me.
So, shall we see below the cut?
Before...
So, let's wind back all the way to chapter 165, back when Cosmic Garou landed. Remember then? He had time to pose for the benefit of the heroes gathered...
…then to look at himself, look at the heavens, and thank God for this gift of power.
Then Bang crawled up to Garou to try calling him back to his senses.
It took a while for the situation to ripen.
It's only in the next chapter, with Bang continuing to plead futilely with Garou, that Blast showed up.
Looks like he showed up as soon as he could.
So far, so good. It seemed that Blast came as soon as he could, given whatever else he was busy with. In the current timeline, Saitama came back from the future and punched Garou right when the latter looked up to thank God, so we thought, reasonably, that Blast never had a chance to appear. Case closed.
And looks like he didn't have an opportunity to show up.
But now we see more...
Several chapters have come and gone, and now we have a fuller picture of the event. And now we know that Blast was aware and on scene when Garou unleashed his gamma-ray burst:
Oh, so you were here.
We know too that Blast was on scene when Saitama appeared to punch out Cosmic Garou, before Bang even had a chance to crawl to Garou.
And there!
So Blast had had an opportunity to intervene earlier but did not take any action until after everyone was dropping dead and Bang was using the last of his energy to plead with Garou to come to his senses.
Okay, there's a place for observing the scene before you wade in so as not to make matters worse. As Drive Knight points out, rushing into things without proper analysis is a foolish thing. However, there's one thing I can't overlook. Even if Blast did not want to carelessly jump into a fight, the fact that he was able to reroute Garou's cosmic rays away from the heroes on the ground -- but had not done so originally... that is borderline unforgiveable.
Damn, if you could always do that, you should have done it earlier!
Let me be extremely clear. I don't hold Blast wholly responsible for restoring Empty Void. Yes, his rerouting the now free-floating 'God' powers as well as the cosmic rays to another dimension accidentally fed Void. That was careless, but not incomprehensible: thinking that one's evil ex-partner whom you left more dead than alive 15 years ago might be camping his nasty half-starved body on the other side of the dimensional hole you opened up in order to receive God's powers is not at the top of anyone's mind. What I am holding him responsible for is failing in the first duty of a hero: HELP PEOPLE!!
Now, let's go back to the original timeline. Even before he stepped up to support Bang, he could have rerouted those cosmic rays and saved most of the heroes. But he did not. I don't think he thought of it. Not a good hero instinct. But it gets worse.
Once it was clear that Garou had no intention of leaving the planet or ceasing to kill with his very presence, Genos stepped up, risking his life to buy Blast an opening.
Being a hero to the core. When people are in need, he is there.
However, when he was in danger and it was clear that Garou was fixing to kill him, did Blast step up? No. He just stood there, opened his mouth and bleated 'No.' [1]
And it gets worse still. It's not like Garou ripped Genos's head off to kill him instantly. Garou punched Genos through his center of mass. That was really bad: his upper torso is heavily protected for a reason, but that is not what killed him. We find out afterwards that Genos remembers seeing Garou pull his core out. Even that did not kill him: we've seen from back with the Giant Meteor that while losing his core's functionality will stop him being able to move his body, Genos's life support systems run independently of it. No, what killed him was Garou smashing him down so hard that his head and armor shattered and his blood splattered and ran into the ground, some of it being washed into long runnels by the fallout rain. So Blast stood there and watched while Garou not only struck Genos critically, but mutilated and maimed him to death. It was as if Garou was taunting him to try something heroic. And when Saitama finally arrived on the scene, Blast was just standing there. Uselessly.
Blast does not have the instincts of a hero.
Saitama rightly criticised himself for losing sight of what a hero's true duty was. I remember back when Sonic asked him who he was, he defined himself as the person who helps people when they are in trouble. [2] And he knows he fell short.
Blast appears to have totally lost sight of this fact. That's why his work is cursed.
A Hero Is More Than Mere Works
Without any doubt, Blast is strong. He is righteous but he's not looking at situations the way a hero should. He looks at things more as a warrior -- and it's not really helpful. He's forgotten the need to actually *be* a hero.
If I think about it a bit more, Blast was concerned for the health of the heroes on the field. Yet he did not protect them, even though he could have. He did not move them out of the way, even though he could have. He did not call on the rest of his compatriots to help him accomplish these goals, even though he could have and they would have helped.
I don't think that Blast is in danger of being deposed as the number 1 hero any time soon but man, it's as Flashy Flash says, his conduct is disappointing.
It's an insult to the heroes we've seen. I can't begin to imagine how bitterly Tatsumaki would be if she could have seen him. As the narrator said, she puts him on too high a pedestal. When I think of how hard she fought while never forgetting the helpless child, the civilians at risk, the rest of the strike team, and taking care of them even as it reduced her fighting efficiency, it's everything Blast ought to be. We saw so many heroes risk their lives to help others, even when they weren't of any strategic value.
Tatsumaki's determination to throw nobody under the bus, no matter how expedient, is the soul of heroism.
A hero is not merely their works. A hero is also what they symbolise. Amai Mask gets it: that's why he goes on and on about a hero being a beautiful symbol of peace. Saitama gets it: that's a big part of why he refused to out King because he symbolised being a hero so well. Mumen Rider lives it: even though he's not strong (by hero standards), he's greatly respected and people are inspired by him to do better in their lives.
What a hero is: someone who saves from danger, someone who reassures, someone who inspires.
Blast doesn't get it. When he had an opportunity to mitigate Garou's cosmic radiation and save lives, it did not occur to him. When he could have swallowed his pride and called back up to help him subdue Garou and save hero lives, it did not even cross his mind: he only saw a fight.
Since when was justice a matter of who can hit who harder?
And when he didn't prevail, he just stood there. When it was time for him to step up as a hero and actually take on some risk to try saving a life, he stood there, as hapless as any civilian. Even when it was hopeless, we didn't see the likes of Tank Top Master giving up. We didn't see Genos giving up on Tatsumaki, even when they were swarmed by Black Sperm. You don't give up on people.
No wonder his works are cursed.
How might the curse be lifted?
Some thoughts.
Never mind Tatsumaki: it's a rare hero who wouldn't be appalled. They all look up to Blast as the ultimate hero.
Fortunately, the only person who knows is Genos: it takes knowing how else things would have played out if Saitama hadn't arrived in the nick of time. Genos has no interest in trying to run down Blast: what little credibility he's got, he's used to tell Sicchi to ensure that Saitama got called up if Blast came up with anything.
Unfortunately, Sicchi hasn't passed on that message to Blast and Saitama's been allowed to go dawdling away. Even more unfortunately, what Sicchi has told Blast about Genos is that he's a terror who impedes access to Saitama. This may have terrible consequences down the line.
Talk about leaving out the important part. That 'is that so?' gives me chills.
You know how some readers are disappointed that the MA arc did not end with Saitama lecturing Garou about the importance of not compromising one's goals? It seems to me that Blast needs that lecture a lot more badly than Garou ever needed it in any version. He's forgotten that the point of heroism is the people you help *first* before it is about glorious fights. Important as it is to fight, losing sight of the human need in front of you is a hiding to nothing.
Or, if you want to put it differently: Saitama is likely to have a reason to confront Blast in the future.
Someone needs to hear this message and it's not the truculent teenage tearaways.
I am going to be there for it with a giant tub of ice cream!

[1] What was it that Awakened Garou said back in the WC: 'When facing an imminent threat against a monster, all you do is open your mouth and start babbling. It's an easy kind of job.'? (ch 85). It has applied very brutally to Blast here.

He’s one of my favourites in Solarballs honestly. And yes, I heavily relate to him so I perfectly understand his awkwardness and inability to joke properly or chilling out when others are joking. I seriously relate to him. I’ve become much better at social interactions now but a lot of his personality greatly reminds me of most of my childhood.
Also, “Your anus” jokes have never been funny to me to begin with.
1) My native or first language isn’t English, including that of the people around me. When we talk amongst each other, if anyone mentions Uranus, naturally no one immediately thinks of his name in that sense. So we’re cool. So, naturally I don’t think of butts when I hear his name.
2) I’m a space lover so I’m much more interested in actually discussing about what makes the Planet Uranus awesome than being interested to laugh endlessly at the same old joke.
3) Poop/butt/fart jokes have NEVER been funny to me in all my lifetime. So even if I thought of the more inappropriate meaning when I hear his name, I don’t ever feel like laughing.
Therefore, whenever I hear a discussion about Uranus and can barely see anyone actually take him (or the actual IRL planet) seriously because they can’t laughing, it doesn’t amuse me in the slightest. It feels like I’m being peer-pressured into laughing at the joke even though it’s not all that funny to me. And that’s really unpleasant.
I understand that if you are a native English speaker and grew up hearing Uranus jokes, then you can’t stop thinking of it in that sense. But I can tell when someone can’t draw the line between joking and being serious. If someone’s one of those who can’t think of another as anything more than a joke, then they clearly don’t actually care about them. They care more about humouring themselves than they care about the other person’s feelings if they just can’t stop. Those people tell you to chill out and not be so serious about being joked about…. But one can’t tell if they’re just being silly or subtly trying to bully them. Because those people never actually helped the other feel better about themselves or acknowledge their existence in any form that’s more than a joke to them so their intentions can’t be trusted even if they say they are just joking. Their intentions can’t be trusted. This is why some people can’t just “chill out” even if the people around say that “it’s just a joke”.
We frequently hear about best friends both mocking each other, having fun, still having each other’s back and worrying for one another. That’s the kind of relationship that Neptune has with Uranus, that’s how Earth and Mars behave with each other. Or Earth and Moon (at least recently). They know each other.
It’s different when people who are like strangers decide right off the bat that the only way they can think of you is by mocking you. You can’t trust them the same way you trust someone who actually knows more about you and cares about you.
Yeah, when those people get told off for always making fun of someone, they pretend that the other person is a sensitive one. Sigh…. There’s TONS of people who feel that way. If someone was just a little different or been through the same experience, they could easily feel ignored the way the other person did. So no, they aren’t crazy or emo for snapping at others, it’s the people around who have been insensitive, even if it’s inadvertent. But of course, no one likes being told they’re been insensitive or wrong so they blame the other person for being mad. They pretend their feelings don’t mean anything but if they felt the same way, they would riot. Double standards in people.
That’s why when I see someone who can’t halt on the joke enough to actually discuss about Uranus as a planet, or maybe they just want attention… then I know they simply don’t care, nor are a genuine space lover. Their opinion… is meaningless to me. It’s Ironic because people get agitated so easily when it’s Pluto, but can’t stop telling others off when they don’t find Uranus jokes funny. The sheer double standards!
Sorry, I think I ranted a lot there… 😅😅😅 But I just wanted to explain why being treated this way hurts. I’ve often felt ignored too, after all.
SolarBalls Uranus character analysis
This planet is so mentally ill and stupid, I love him. He's so underrated and gets so over-looked aswell, But I, Nari, will... probably not change that because idk how many people will actually read this uhm. (Also, I fo definitely self project and vent a little in this.... oopsies! DW, it's still kinda important to the analysis) ANYWAY, LETS START LOL.
First I'd like to say what we can see about Uranus on a surface level, these will all be things I explain later on.
The things that I notice are that fact that he:
• likes art
• A lot of the time we see him he's writing in his diary and is very protective and secretive of it
• He can be quite insensitive and make very disturbing jokes(E.G: when he said he'd crush his moons to make bigger rings,, he literally said he'd kill them to look more like Saturn, DW, I'll mention all that later)
• He needs to have a written apology for his moons aswell
• Uranus is also pretty lonely from what we see, he also wants to be seen as a cool planet and he also wants both compliments and attention and not just be dumbed down to "Haha your anus"
I think I've brought up enough stuff for now, I'll probably add more the deeper I go.
Uranus is oh so insecure. There are so many things that make him this way. I've rewritten the start of this so many times because I just don't know where to start or how to write it 😭😭
He is constantly made fun of for his name and his smell, 2 things he literally has no control over. He believes that no one takes him seriously or even cares about his problems whatsoever, and I can't blame the guy! A little anecdote for you lot. In primary school, my last name got made fun of, and I was never bullied for it - thankfully. Because they, at least, had the decency to stop when they could see I was upset. But I do relate to Uranus in this scenario, being made fun of for your name(something you have little control over until you're older, atleast for humans) fucking sucks and I'm sure it still has an effect on me today.
Because Uranus is made fun of a lot, he doesn't bother with going up and interacting with the other planets, there are some times where he does actually start a conversation, but even then that's pretty rare, and he doesn't travel far to start a conversation with anyone(Even if he tried, knowing his luck, he'd be hit with a solar flare.) Neptune is the one he talks to the most, but that motherfucker goes away to talk to his weird rock friends and you can barely hold a conversation with Neptune most of the time. Because of this isolation, it leads to him being insensitive and saying things he doesn't mean, E.G: When he tells Neptune he regrets saying to go away and follow his orbit. He's insensitive as he literally said he'd destroy his moons for cooler rings, I get it was a "joke," but man... you can't just go up to someone and say "I will kill you and mount you on my wall for decoration!" because that's fucking deranged. This really gives off 2015-2017 vibes where people said the most... interesting "dark jokes"
He is so protective over his diary because he just thinks if he shares his feelings and thoughts he's just going to be made fun of, it even happens when he's not THERE dude(see "The journey to Neptune") Why should he share what he's thinking or feeling? Nothing's going to change, and everyone will keep taking the piss out of him anyway. At least he thinks, and honestly? He's correct,,,,, kinda, the other planets, moons and other space stuff might take him seriously but humans won't so.... 💀
I've noticed he's much more willing to show his art though. As an artist myself, SO TRUE DUDE. You get complimented so easily by people if you draw anything. Sure, the response is normally "OMG, that's so good! I can barely stray a stick figure, haha!" But still! It's a compliment, and it's SO valuable for someone like Uranus who doesn't get compliments and is only belittled, event then, from what I remember both Neptune and Jupiter accidentally fuck up his art and start annoying him so not even THAT works in a way where he isnt the but of the joke IYKWIM.
Since Uranus has little social interaction, he can't even think of apologies on the top of his head without completely overthinking it and needs to write them down, read them out as if it's a script and get assistance from someone else even though he's a writer(In an ad Uranus stated he prefered to write) he has such little confidence in himself because he's been MADE to think and feel that way. Another side effect of this is that he's just so desperate to be complimented or to seem "cool" IYKWIM. I have had such little human interaction(not including online, I mean IRL, face to face) so anytime I get compliments I want more because I never get them, I get surprised when people want to hang out with me(Uranus gets surprised when Saturn wants to hang out with him). He also has a laptop, I believe? So he's probably chronically online as well,,,
Uranus' and Saturn's relationship(both platonically and romantically) is SO interesting. Saturn IS self aware about how nice his rings are, I mean... he's constantly reminded of it, but he is also a bit dense at the same time,, he definitely knows his worth but(to me) seems a little,,, ignorant to others in a way? (Forgive me if this is mischaracterized,,, I've not done a Staurn character analysis yet,,,,) Ignorant in the sense that he doesn't think about how other would feel about THEIR own rings(*CoughCough*URANUS*CoughCough*) I do believe Saturn is quite ignorant with others' fewlings at times. Saturn also gets all the attention(mainly for his rings) and I'll admit, I was a basic bitch as a kid, my favourite planet when I was younger was Saturn because of its rings! (No hate to those whose favourite planet is Saturn LOL!) Anyway, basically what I'm saying is that Saturn is very emotionally unintelligent at times.
Uranus is SO jealous of this, HE wants the compliments, HE wants the recognition, HE wants to BE Saturn because ultimately, in his mind, no one will ever appreciate him as himself, no matter what he does. I believe that at times, Uranus dislikes Saturn because of all this pent-up anger, yet anytime Saturn talks to him, it all seems to go away. It's like he wants to,,,, dislike him? But can't. He looks up to Saturn in a way, I'm guilty of this as well,,, starting to dislike someone but then all of that hatred/ pent-up anger goes away because they said like,,, one word to you LMAO. Uranus CRAVES attention, affection and recognition. All things he never gets(unless it's at his expense). It's a horrible cycle of hating yourself, projecting that hatred to someone else because you want their attention. IYKWIM, ha, then that anger goes away once they talk to you, they leave and the cycle repeats over and over. Luckily, it's never been THIS bad for me(I know I've been semi-venting, but SHSHHSHSHSHH), but damn, I feel awful for this talking fictional cartoon planet 😭😭
ALSO, going back to the start where I said:

Saturn is constantly PRAISED for things he has no control over(once again, talking about his rings,,, but this is such an important thing guys PLEAE3PLEADE) Like... imagine you and this other person, right? You are constantly made fun of for your name because parents now like to name their kids really dumb shit,, the other person is praised for something literally BOTH of you have, but no one cares because it's funny to make fun of you!
Another thing I'd like to talk about. It's quite obvious that I relate to SolarBalls! Uranus on such a deep level dude OMG 😭 I wanna mention that this planet DEFINITELY has both psychosis AND depression, it's no fair that I have them yet this guys just gets to frolic in the fields and not be mentally ill. You can't tell me anytime he's somewhere different or talking to a person he feels dissociated/ not feeling real. I also want to mention, if we think of a Human! AU right? Since Uranus smells, does this mean that everyone else is just making fun of an extremely mentally ill persons hygiene??? Because that's actually SO fucked and hits so close to home. I have probably have both depression and psychosis(I don't wanna get diagnosed now, when I'm older my friend is gonna force me though) and I am so scared of people talking about the way I smell because I don't have the motivation to take showers regularly, hell, I only recently got the motivation to pul deodorant on myself. It's absolutely HORRIBLE and HUMILIATING, being made fun of for it makes it so much worse, it makes you not want to bother,, because even your attempts at fixing your life aren't acknowledged.
FANFIC WRITERS, GET ON THIS IDEA! I GAVE YOU GUYS A FREE ANGST PLOTLINE I BETTER SEE SOMETHIMG!
Anyway holy shit so sorry for the vent, I mainly mentioned it because:
1. I'm 100% projecting
2. I like angst
I find it quite interesting how the planets(rightfully so) critiqued and gave advice for Earth because he WAS being an absolute dick, yet no one's ever criticised but almost ENCOURAGED to make fun of Uranus?? Am I too deep into this?? Am I going insane??? Yes to both of those questions! (Not comparing their situations... kinda? Idk I find it so weird that they have a double standard, they disliked the Earth because he's a bully yet they bully Uranus?? ALSO SIDE NOTE!!! I don't think the rocky planets have made fun of Uranus before(mainly because they don't talk to him) but they also don't laugh at his name when Neptune says it,, so maybe they'll be able to knock some sense into the others?? Aaaa I hope so!)
I need an episode of SolarBalls where it's a Sun trophy one about "who smells the worst" or something, this completely sets Uranus off as everyone's laughing at him and he just flys off back to his orbit... I need angst guys, please. If Uranus decides to go ape shit on the other planets, then honestly? Good, they fucking deserve it, LET MY BOY DRAG THEIR ASSES! LET HIM BE ANGRY WITH EVERYONE AND HOLD A GRUDGE, HE'S EARNED IT! If this does happen, I hope they're all not just forgiven instantly,,,, because it's actually so awful what that silly light blue planet goes through on a DAY to DAY basis.
Uh that's it I guess?? I definitely have more to say but I don't want to keep this in the drafts for another month so...
If Uranus gets an arc, I'll update this with my thoughts and try not to freak out 🙏

It was incredible... I can't find the words to describe how amazing it is!

After Titan took Luna hostage... I wanted him thrown asteroids. And even when Titan listened to Earth, I still couldn't forgive him for his past behavior. In this episode, Titan protected the Earth!!! And the asteroids have fallen on Titan! I'm morally satisfied)

I HATE Ganymede and Europa!!!!! They are so embittered that they don't even listen to others! I wonder how Jupiter will react when he finds out that his favorite moons attacked Earth and crippled many other moons. Judging by their conversation and Ganymede's smirk at the end, the revolution won't end as long as these two exist.

One of the theories came true. Triton did meet Pluto and Charon.

I don’t think Solarballs is even hiding that the moons aren’t taking a good path. I really don’t like them but we still saw the Moons being unsure about this entire revolution and looking sad even as some of them kept throwing asteroids at our two heroes.
Even Ganymede looked a bit tense about the whole thing. Ofc that won’t earn him forgiveness and he still acted violently, but it’s something to notice. Callisto, Dione, and even some other Moons somehow feel obligated to obey Ganymede even if they don’t like this method. Is it because they are habituated to thinking anyone who’s bigger than them is more superior? Is that why they assumed the Planets are oppressing them or looking down on them? Even if Saturn tried to apologise and loves his Moons so much? Is that why they couldn’t talk against a bigger Moon like Ganymede?! Or are they wired to follow what the majority is doing?
I don’t like where this is going at all, I absolutely don’t. I’ve been sick to my stomach all day. Even Solarballs isn’t hiding that Europa is incredibly sinister, she already has the body language of a villain. And we’ve seen more than enough situations where it’s clear than the Moons are suspicious of literally anything the Gas Giants say, sometimes it’s understandable since they’re helpless like with Moons of Uranus. (it still hurts) But at other times, you really can’t blame the planets and the Moons are definitely taking this too far!
However, some look like they’re gonna hesitate to keep this going very soon. When will that happen? Who knows! But ONCE they realise what a horrible route they’re taken, I want a full payback for causing me all this stress and frustration from watching them cause havoc.
If they are trying to make the moons seem reasonable or justified they are failing miserably. I don't even know if we are supposed to root for them at all anymore after the most recent episode.
I think Ganymede and Europa might even know that what they are doing is wrong because he hesitated to tell mars his real plan.
Are they supposed to be villains? Because what happened in the most recent episode seems like villan behavior.
Mars actively discouraged and condemned Earths behavior twoards moons and venus doesn't even have moons but yet the moons still force him into the conflict. They are getting punished for something they have no parts in and mars even seems to treat his moons well but who gives a shit.
Also also also earth's moon was hurt the most by earth's behavior wich I am pretty sure is the thing the moons have a problem with (even though only 4 moons were even part of that conflict) but earth's moon was the one who decided to forgive.
If the problem is really with thier own planets, why are they just targeting earth? 3 moons in the revolution had a bad experience with earth (Titan, Phobos, and Deimos), and that's the main target. I know he said something about all moons, but it was really only 2 guys that were there and heard.
If they wanted to make us side with the moons they maybe should of held off on earth alone where they show us that earth is willing to change and is becoming a better person (I'm assuming this is taking g place at the same time)
The planets have been shown to care about thier moons, and will probably listen in the case where a real conversation is wanted to be had, but violence is thier first option I guess?
The tone of this arc makes it seems like we are kinda supposed to root for the moons but the actual actions in the show of the planets do not warrant a revolution directed towards them.
