Machinations of Love - a 3/3 adult ASL reunion
The fic is now out! uwu
It was one of the adventures Ace and Sabo had already told him once — back during the happiest year of Luffy’s life, when there was just him, his brothers, and the whole world waiting for them to take it by storm — and Luffy found that he wasn’t really interested in listening to it again.
Tackling Ace seemed like a much better use of their time.
Ace yelped when Luffy crashed into his back, snapping forward and slamming his face into the blanket.
“Gotcha!”
“You little-!” Ace laughed, his voice muffled by the blanket, trying to twist himself in a way that’d let him grab Luffy properly.
Sabo seemed far less amused, the hand holding his diary closed clutching at the cover hard enough to make his knuckles go white. “Luffy,” he said, sternly. “You know Ace is still recovering-”
“Oh, come off it,” rolling his eyes, Ace finally managed to twist enough to get a grip on Luffy and pull him into a headlock. “Like we hadn’t done worse on Dawn!”
“Nevertheless,” Sabo’s back was painfully straight, and his eyes kept flickering between each point of contact Luffy and Ace shared.
Luffy glanced up, but Ace wasn’t looking at him. He was staring straight at Sabo, the two of them having a battle of wills.
Just like in the good old days.
And just like back then, Ace scoffed and backed off. Loosening the grip he had around Luffy’s neck, he let himself fall backwards, arms crossing against his chest.
Back on Dawn, this would be the moment when Ace would slink away to sulk alone for a few hours. Here and now, Luffy didn’t even give him the chance to do that, draping himself over his brother’s torso.
Ace’s expression… softened, Luffy would like to say. It did, in the end, but it seemed to spasm briefly, shifting through a brief second of deeper annoyance.
It cleared out before Luffy could rethink his actions, Ace’s arms uncrossing to wrap around Luffy’s shoulders.
“Nap time,” Luffy mumbled into his shirt, closing his eyes.
Ace was still colder than he should have been, but not as lukewarm as he was last night. Basking there in the sun, Luffy felt like he was back on Merry, the deck underneath him radiating the heat it had absorbed over the course of the day.
Luffy nodded off with a hand brushing through his hair and Sabo’s voice passing over him in a low mutter, recounting yet another old adventure.

Imagine you are witnessing the Marineford execution live-time. A pop-up appears in front of you; It says,
Anything you say in the replies, reblogs or tags may and very possibly will be used in a crack fic
The premise of which is based upon @taizi saying "ace saw at the end that he was loved but i wish he could see how much WE love him too" in a convo and me going "crack fic inspo"

Let's not imagine Law waking up from a nap to find his hat taken off his head and clutched in Luffy's grip. He'd be mad, of course, getting through a sleep-thick "oi, Mugiwara-ya-" before realizing that Luffy was still asleep, wrapped up around him. He'd just sigh, giving up for now; He could barely get his words through Luffy's thick skull when the boy's awake, trying to do it while he was asleep would just be an exercise in futility.
Let's not think about him carefully extracting himself from Luffy's grasp, leaving the other captain leaning against the mast. Oh, he could have just shambled himself out, sure, but then Luffy would have fallen to the ground and of course Law didn't care about that — not at all — but that'd probably wake him up, and Law really didn't want to deal with him awake just yet.
He'd try to tug his hat out of Luffy's iron grasp only to fail. The fingers dug into the fur tightly enough that he'd run a risk of ripping it if he tried to just yank it out. He'd give up, at that point — it didn't matter that much, did it? He'd get it back eventually, and at least he could trust it wouldn't get swept off the deck when trapped like that.
Let's not consider him stumbling his way over to the bathroom, figuring that he might as well get started with his day. So what if the sun was barely out? The time left before they reached Dressrosa was highly limited, he could use every minute he had to run through his plans again.
Let's not think about Law absently looking in the mirror while washing his hands, expecting to see nothing but his eyebags underneath his eyes.
And let's not think about the brief moment of confusion he'd feel at the sight of freckles covering his cheeks — something he never had, never even wondered about how he'd look with them.
Well, he knew now. And the answer turned out to be: surprisingly similar to Firefist.
The confusion wouldn't clear out until he'd rub at his cheek with a wet hand, the freckles smudging and disappearing with little effort.
Ink. It was just ink.
Why, though? Why would someone go through the effort of pranking him — because that's what it had to be, he heard of that joke before — and stop at freckles? Why not draw something crude, write an insult? Why something so innocent?
He'd find out eventually, he figured, shrugging it off for now.
Let's not consider him making his way back out on the deck, planning on having one last try at liberating his hat before retreating to the library. He'd hope that Luffy would remain asleep throughout the process, but luck was not on his side; the other captain would start to stir right as Law approached him, bleary eyes squinting to look at him.
Let's not imagine Luffy making a garbled noise that could or could not have been "Ace" depending on who was around to hear it; Let's not imagine his eyes snapping wide open, looking at Law like he was a ghost for a moment, just a moment, until Luffy's brain caught up.
Let's not think about the way Luffy's face would fall before he forced himself to smile again, noticing the hat in his grasp and offering it to Law with an insincere apology.
He'd bounce away then, about to go pester Sanji for some food while Law continued on to the library, his previous idle curiosity satisfied in the worst way.
Let's not think about all that.
(Law sure was doing his best not to think about it all.)
I know a lot of people talk about Luffy reminding Law of Corasan (someone he loved dearly who died protecting him), but what about

Law reminding Luffy of Ace?

Ace is the captain of the spade pirates. The Ace of spades represents death. Who’s got death in their name and literally tattooed the word on both their hands? Law. Law is also the captain of the heart pirates? Another callback to playing cards? The ace of hearts represents love. Ace didn’t think or realize that he deserved love throughout all of his life, yet he’s loved by all of the people he’s made an impact on. Death and Love. Love and Death. THINK ABOUT IT

other than my Crocodad DofuWani bullshit (which is now at 22k and yes this is the first im mentioning it here whoops its still only half done. send help) my other brainrot which i have been thinking about today is AceLaw.
More specifically, an AceLaw where they met shortly after Ace entered the Grand Line, started dating, Marineford happened as normal... And then the plot starts. With Luffy and Law and the insurmountable mountain of grief they're both shouldering.
I have something relatively short (2k) to post about it soon, courtesy of exploring exactly how many characters will discord let me cram into a single message (got to -8808 lol) over in MDL
Here's an excerpt bc i ought to make some use of this blog:
Pulling out the leather-bound journal, he set it carefully on Luffy's lap.
"Please don't destroy it. There's only this one copy."
Luffy glanced up at him, baffled. It was better than anger or sadness, at least.
Law motioned towards the book wordlessly and leaned against the desk; No description he could give for the book would be better than Luffy just taking a look himself.
He pulled the cover open gingerly, recoiling slightly at the sight of the first page. It was inked almost fully black, with only three coloured letters right in the middle of it: red A, blue S and yellow L.
Their first Jolly Roger, Ace had told him. The one they flew over the treehouse right up until they abandoned it after their brother's death.
Law supposed it might still hang there, if no one had bothered to take it down.
Luffy whipped his head up, staring at him with wide eyes.
"Keep going," Law encouraged. "He wanted you to see it, eventually."
Looking back down, Luffy turned the page. And then again, and again, and again, moving through the pages fast enough to make it clear he wasn't actually reading any of the words, barely looking at the pictures.
If he was anything like Ace, he likely couldn't read all that well, not even the carefully calligraphed words Ace had bribed Law into writing for him.
That was fine, though. There would be time for reading, later. Luffy already knew most of those stories, anyway. He had been there for them.
The only novelty would be getting to learn Ace's perspective on them; Something that, judging by his words, Luffy could clearly use.
It didn't take him long to reach the end, flipping the pages faster and faster until he reached the end of the filled portion. The few dozen empty pages fell towards the rest easily, opening the journal on the last page, the one Ace had most often returned to.
Luffy's hand carefully traced the edges of the portrait carefully inserted into the back cover.
"This..." he trailed off.
Law gave him a moment. When it became clear he wasn't going to continue, he filled in himself.
"Is Sabo, yes."
Luffy looked up at him again. There was old pain filling them, old tears.
"Ace had been working on it for a long time," Law elaborated. "I have a whole binder of his previous attempts, too. He wasn't happy with how this one turned out, either, but he said it was the closest he could get." And then, because he had been curious for the longest time- "Did he get it right?"
Luffy hunched his shoulder. "...I don't know," he said. "I don't- I didn't remember what Sabo looked like, anymore."
It's been ten years, to be fair. If someone had asked Law to describe Cora-san, he would have had troubles, too. Feathery coat, heart-dingled hat, wide lipstick smile, spikes under his eye, that much he remembered.
But how many spikes? Under which eye? What colour were the eyes themselves?
Time had an unfortunate habit of sanding away the details, taking the sharp edges of memories and tumbling them into blunt, opaque things, like sea glass.
It did the same to grief; That was the price you paid for healing.

This piece is SO GOOD it gave me irresistible brainworms. I hope you don't mind if I-
***
He wasn't actually sure what tipped him off. There was no sound, no movement, nothing to betray another's presence, not even a ping on his Observation Haki.
But Rosinante still felt the need to turn around, and, when he did, there he was: an intruder in Marineford.
Pulling out the gun was a reflex, a gesture to make the other man hesitate and give Rosinante the time to take in the details.
It was a stranger; Someone Rosinante had never seen in person or in a bounty picture. But he couldn't say he didn't know who it was, when he stared at him down the barrel of his gun.
The heart-shaped tattoos covering his chest, Jolly Roger resembling Doflaming's inked alongside them, the blue-feathered coat, the... interesting choice of headwear and trousers and, most damningly, the way he stared at Rosinante's face — the face he shared with his brother — as if he saw a ghost-
This couldn't have been anyone else but the elusive Heart Executive, the one who had been reportedly sent out on an important mission and whose place Rosinante had been preparing to take.
To think that his mission would bring him to Marineford... That, by some stroke of misfortune, he got to see — and clearly recognize — Rosinante in his marine whites...
The man was about Rosinante's age, he estimated. In his early twenties.
It was a pity that he had to die.
But Rosinante couldn't sabotage his own mission before it even had a chance to begin.
It would be kinder to give him no warning, Rosinante thought, and was milliseconds away from pressing the trigger when the Corazon started speaking.
"You're-"
Rosinante didn't let him finish, shooting him in the center of his chest.
The Corazon stumbled back slightly, one hand moving towards his chest while the other still held on to his ridiculously-oversized sword.
He seemed baffled. Shocked, even, as if he hadn't expected Rosinante to attack him.
"Room," he breathed out, a small blue globe — eerily similar to the effects of Rosinante's own Devil Fruit — appeared at his fingertips, plunging into his chest.
Within moments, the wound stopped bleeding, the bullet popping out into Corazon's hand just before the hole mended entirely.
Rosinante stared at the display, his eyes wide-opened and stinging. He wasn't familiar with which Fruit could have done that — the Heart Executive wasn't supposed to have a Devil Fruit at all — but if it made him respond so casually to getting shot point-blank-
The Corazon glanced down at the bullet held in his grasp, jaw tightening before he dropped it on the ground.
"I... Suppose that's fair," the man said, straightening up to look up at him. Rosinante shifted his aim, now pointing between his eyes. See him recover from that. "Please don't shoot me again, Cora-san."
Rosinante flinched at the name. Corazon, in turn, flinched at his flinch, eyes flickering down to his finger resting on the trigger.
...At least he considered Rosinante's gun a threat, as little as it might actually do against him.
"Don't call me that," he grunted out, itching for a cigarette. The Corazon's lips twitched, as if he was repressing a smile. As if he knew. "Why would you call me that?"
Any signs of amusement fell off the Corazon's face, his eyebrows scrunching as he took Rosinante in properly.
"...I was wondering why you looked the same," he mused. "But, no, that's not even- You're younger, aren't you? Younger than 26, than 23, before-"
"Get to the point, pirate, or I'll finish it for you."
"What year is it, C-uh. Sir?"
Rosinante blinked. "Time travel?" He raised an eyebrow. "That's what you're going with?"
The Corazon didn't seem happy about that, either.
"I'll eat my hat if this wasn't Mugiwara-ya's fault," he muttered, looking off to the side. "Him and his goddamn Gear 5-"
The nonsensical words were a code-word of sorts, Rosinante supposed. There's no other explanation for why the Corazon's form suddenly started flickering, red lighting zipping across his skin seemingly without his permission.
"I love you, too," the man pushed out quickly, forcing his mouth into a wide grin which his face was clearly unaccustomed to expressing, his free hand raising in a V gesture. "You never let me say it back-"
He faded out of existence, leaving Rosinante too confused to do much of anything.
This was... The weirdest thing that had ever happened to him. To the point where Rosinante doubted if it had ever even happened.
Just a hallucination, he guessed. The stress of preparing for his mission was clearly getting to him.
He jolted when his Den Den Mushi started ringing, his father's voice calling him for another meeting.
Hurrying to his office, Rosinante did his best to push that peculiar encounter out of his mind, never noticing the bullet still resting on the ground.
It made no sense.
No sense at all.
(It would only be years later, after closing the lid to the chest now hosting his greatest treasure, that Rosinante understood what the words meant.)
(He spent the last moments of his life happy to know that Law would clearly make it to adulthood, tears forcing their way through his eyelids as he tried to remember every detail.)
(It was a comfort to know Law had never forgotten him, either.)

oh btw this had been posted under Right place, Right person, Wrong time now!
An excerpt from something that's been in my drafts for far too long now
Luffy & Sabo, pre-canon, Sabo still has amnesia but Koala dragged him to spend a day on Dawn Island and just so happened to time it right after Ace left, and he ended up spending the day with Luffy
Sabo gave in to the impulse, leaning forward to press a kiss against Luffy’s forehead.
The kid looked up at him, eyes wide and only just starting to fill up with tears. The cry that escaped his throat sounded almost painful, raw and violent, and he lunged forwards, hands fisting in Sabo’s coat as his face pressed against his cravat.
“I miss Sabo,” he sobbed into Sabo’s chest.
Sabo gingerly wrapped his arms around the kid.
“...I’m sorry I’m not the person you want me to be,” he said.
They stayed like that for a while. Sabo kept rubbing Luffy’s back in what he hoped to be a soothing motion, allowing the kid to let it all out.
In the end, Luffy was the one to pull away, straightening up as he wiped at his eyes with wrist.
Sabo gently pulled his arm down, grabbing a handkerchief to use instead.
He carefully cleaned up Luffy’s face, letting him use the handkerchief to blow his nose once done. Sabo intended to leave the fabric with Luffy, anyway, so it would be fine.
Once Luffy was all cleaned up, the time has come to say goodbye.
