I think I may have adhd
I'm not diagnosed but I really think I have it, I'm going to the doc when the shit with the covid it's better
My family know that I have depression and anxiety and are supportive about that, but when I started to read about adhd everything made more sense, I feel better thinking that im not a bad person but I'm a little different
So I decide to tell them that maybe I have it, but they laughed at me, they say that it didn't exist or that I was somatizing
It just make me feel worst
Maybe I'm just a bad person
Maybe I don have a remedy

Can someone answer this?
Why would someone, anyone, would want to spend time with me?
My teachers don't answer my questions about school
My acquaintances don't even acknowledge me
My friend of almost 5 years does not care when I try to open myself about another friend trying to take advantage by getting me drunk
Sometimes I dream than someone would come and save me, try to talk to me, do anything but then I remember
Why would someone do it?
Why would anyone want to talk to me?
Why would anyone care?
Why spend time with me?

How to Not Be Annoying - Part 3 Self-Absorbed
We relate everything back to ourselves, and this is interpreted as self-absorbed or one-uping. In reality, our ADHD minds work by taking everything in our environment and finding a connection in our own experiences, and we assume other people work that way as well. There is a super easy fix to this:
Use a technique called “mirroring”. When you mirror, you take a short bit of what the person says and repeat it back to them. It’s a good conversation technique for ADHD people because neurotypical people are both constantly concerned that we weren’t actively listening to them, and feel as though we’re redirecting the conversation back to ourselves. Mirroring allows you to show them that you heard what they had to say, and you are building upon their conversation topic.
Usual conversation:
Sara: The dog ran out the door today, and I have to chase her down the street!
Emily: My dog ran outside yesterday - he was chasing a bird, you know he loves those - and then the neighbor was outside….(onto a rambling story, while Sara feels as though the conversation is one sided and gets frustrated)
Mirroring:
Sara: The dog ran out the door today, and I have to chase her down the street!
Emily: Wow, Pearl ran outside? That must have been stressful! Parker ran outside recently, and I was so worried about getting him back.
In the second conversation, Sara feels heard, and I got to make my connection to my own life.
If you want to level up, you can try asking a qualifying question after mirroring, and then waiting for the answer before telling your own connection story.
Wow, Pearl ran outside? That must have been stressful! How far did she get? (and then onto the story about Parker).
Has anyone been using mirroring without putting a name to it? Let me know if this works for you!

“because how do you tell someone that you are unhappy and literally crying from behind your screen when they seem so happy and full of life and they are getting ready to go to sleep and dream about happy things and you don’t want to ruin their night so you say nothing and let them keep their happiness while you’re slowly falling apart”

Hanged
I hung myself today. Hanged? Whatever,
the point is I hanged myself today and I’m still
hanging.
I feel fine. Just bored. I keep hoping that
someone will come home and cut me down
but then I keep remembering that if I knew
someone like that I wouldn’t be up here. Bit
ironic, right? Or is that not ironic? I read
somewhere that, like, anything funny is,
in some way, ironic. But I don’t know if it's
funny or not. I don’t think my brain owns
“funny”, you know?
I feel taller. I like that.
I’ve never been away from my shadow for
this long. It had always clung to my feet,
parting momentarily for a quick dive into
the swimming pool. But never for five
hours. I like it. There’s three feet of space
between my two and the floor.
I wanted something this morning. I may be
stuck. But at least I’m three feet closer to it.

When you just can’t love yourself, just work on giving yourself basic respect.
When you just can’t practice self care, aim for basic hygiene and keeping yourself alive.
When you just can’t have positive thoughts, focus on ignoring the negative ones.
When you just can’t quit those bad habits and unhealthy coping mechanisms, be sure to take care of yourself afterwards.
When you just can’t make yourself eat enough, aim for something three times a day, even if it’s something small.
When you just can’t stop binge eating, just do your best to forgive yourself and focus on something else instead of dwelling on it for any longer.
Not everyone is at a point where they can recover, and so thinking about recovery can be intimidating and make them shut down, because they just feel like they’re nowhere close to getting better so they might as well not bother. There needs to be more advice on dragging yourself through the days. Self care to the bare minimum. Aiming for “feeling okay with yourself” or “feeling less awful about yourself” rather than loving yourself. Baby steps.

So, I've been doing some more ADHD research in order to understand how and why my brain functions the way it does and uh...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image 1 desc: Scientists have observed that levels of dopamine are different in people with ADHD than in those without ADHD. Some researchers believe this difference is because neurons in the brain and nervous systems of people with unmedicated ADHD have lower concentrations of proteins called dopamine transporters. /End desc]
(Image 2 desc: In the brain, dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter - a chemical released by neurons (nerve cells) to send signals to other nerve cells. The brain includes several distinct dopamine pathways, one of which plays a major role in the motivational component of reward-motivated behavior. /End desc]
[Image 3 desc: Sugar and other high carb foods boost dopamine levels in the brain, leading us to crave them more often when dopamine levels are low. Since kids with ADHD have chronically low levels of dopamine, they are more likely than other kids to crave and eat sugary or carbohydrate-heavy foods. /End desc]
I'm screaming: THAT'S why I eat way too many fucking sweets!!!
Also, our chronically low dopamine levels do also explain why we have hyperfixations: it's because our brains have such lacking amounts of said neurotransmitter, it latches onto various activities/interests because they help provide us with the dopamine our brains so desperately crave!! It also explains why we struggle with staying on tasks that don't interest us: because, as previously mentioned, dopamine plays a major role in the motivational compartment of reward-motivated behaviour!!!
I simply needed to share this because it might help other ADHD/ADDers understand themselves!! Because it sure as hell helped me out.

ADHD
Not sure why ADHD is trending on Twitter, but sure, here’s my big post about ADHD, because now it’s too long to be a Twitter thread (ADHD, amirite?):
ADHD has possibly THE most inaccurate name for a medical condition:
Dysregulation of attention, not deficit. We focus MORE intensely than neurotypicals on things that have caught our attention, because our neurotransmitter receptors (e.g., dopamine) developed atypically. But we struggle with switching tasks, because of this.
Inattentive-type ADHD won’t be as obvious, because it’s not the “physically disruptive boy child” stereotype.
Yes, it is a real neurodevelopmental condition, and yes, the medical community knows what it is.
No, not everybody “is a little bit ADHD.” Saying that shows that you haven’t educated yourself about the condition.
It usually manifests very differently for women, & MANY medical professionals aren’t informed about that.
Letting a child’s ADHD go undiagnosed and untreated leads to a VERY high risk of adulthood co-morbid anxiety & depression.
Letting someone’s ADHD go undiagnosed also leads to VERY high risk of addiction, because addictive substances trigger a fast release of dopamine, and the reward centers of our brains desperately need dopamine to live a happy & fulfilling life.
Black kids are 70% less likely (and Latinx kids 50% less likely) to be diagnosed than their white peers, because the most noticeable behaviors are attributed to willful misbehaving defiance, as opposed to a neurological cause.
This contributes to higher suspension rates for Black and Latine/Latinx kids, and higher likelihood of entering juvenile detention systems.
The misdiagnosis-to-prison pipeline is very real, with some neuroscience studies estimating that 40% of inmates in the US have ADHD.
Stigmatizing pharmaceutical treatments is harmful, because it inhibits people from accessing treatment.
Stimulant medications do not affect people with ADHD the same way they do for neurotypicals. They have a calming and focusing effect on folks with ADHD (unless co-morbid anxiety, depression, or other co-morbid conditions interfere)
Many folks with ADHD struggle to even remember to take their meds, and the most commonly prescribed treatments now have a time-delay mechanism that helps limit the risk of addiction.
Getting diagnosed as an adult made me cry, out of relief. I finally had an explanation, & I could forgive myself.
I am perpetually hyper-aware of how “not normal” I am in social interactions. I go through life feeling like an alien, every day.
This can lead to a perpetual cycle of self-isolation and self-consciousness, along with other maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Many symptoms that occur with Autism can also occur with ADHD: sensory overload, hyper-fixation/hyperfocus, directness, rejection of societal norms, emotional dysregulation.
The reason people with ADHD seem like they make every conversation about themselves is because they are trying to make genuine connections with other humans and stay actively engaged in the topic. Anything else seems superficial, disingenuous, and meaningless. People with ADHD seek genuine connection, and we are trying very hard to make that connection with you.
As with Autism, people with ADHD frequently reject society-imposed notions of gender and sexuality. These societal constructs are fairly useless, frequently harmful, and honestly feel contrived, awkward, and silly. I’m not just making that up. There is a VERY high correlation between gender dysphoria and ADHD (as well as Autism).
The reason I have to write everything down is because my working memory basically doesn’t exist.
The reason we interrupt in conversation sometimes is because we literally won’t remember what we need to say by the time someone finishes talking.
I forget someone’s name before they even finish their sentence. There are a million other things happening in my brain as I am trying to navigate a social situation.
Folks with ADHD can struggle with “Information Retrieval,” which is ironic for me, considering my PhD research focus. The information is THERE, however, and if there is an external stimulus to trigger, my brain can access and retrieve the information that I have stored.
So many folks who have ADHD struggle when they are put on the spot, unexpectedly. They can’t just conjure something out of thin air, so none of their words come out right, and then they will feel like an imposter.
It’s not all bad stuff. The running joke is that people with ADHD don’t just “think outside of the box”…they throw the entire box out, and provide innovative solutions that many wouldn’t have considered.
ADHD is highly-correlated with innovation, entrepreneurship, physical accomplishment, and artistry (e.g., Bill Gates, Michael Phelps, Simone Biles, Jim Carrey, John Mulaney)
We have so many hobbies, hidden talents, and interests…and we’re VERY enthusiastic about ALL of them. They used to have a word for folks like that, and there’s a reason scientists have postulated that Leonardo da Vinci very likely had ADHD.
I can detect someone else who has ADHD or Autism almost immediately (even if they don’t know it), & immediately form bonds with them. I don’t make the rules. It just happens. And I find it very refreshing to interact with folks who are neurodivergent, because I can let my guard down and just be myself.
