My most recent finished read: Lilith’s Brood by Octavia Butler.
This book was quite intense - even weird and uncomfortable - at times, but explores an interwoven tapestry of themes (colonialism, gender, sexuality, hierarchy, genetic modification, etc.) that made it all worth the journey.
A highly advanced alien species called the Oankali land on Earth following a global nuclear war. The Oankali capture the surviving humans, with the goal of preserving them via genetic editing and hybridization. While some of the humans cooperate with this project, others resist.
This trilogy centers around the Lilith Iyapo, one of the first humans to accept the experimental role creating the first Oankali-Human hybrids, and the children she brings forth into the new world.

Way late, but here is last year’s StoryGraph wrap up. I picked some absolute bangers for 2023. I think if I had to pick my top 3 favorites that were the best reading experiences, definitely would be Wind-Up Bird, Invisible Man, and Parable of the Talents. Circe and Left Hand of Darkness were very close contenders too. I also decided as a “new years goal” to both read more non-fiction and use my local library system, so I picked history and philosophy as a focus, and I think I picked some excellent choices.
The Final Fantasy XIII light novels were kinda meh - I mostly read them to coincide with the games, since I’m working through playing the series for the first time this year. They are pretty much what you’d expect.
