Repeating this here, now that it’s fallen off Instagram Stories, so apologise if you’ve already seen it all. So, on Sunday, after repeated raves from @irene.triendl and others, I went to @TheGardenCinema (Parker Street, near Holborn) for the first time and fell madly in love with the place. I bought a membership immediately and went back the next day. A lifetime membership currently only costs £20 (it is apparently changing soon) and for that you get a free ticket (so automatically £10 back) and £2 off all tickets in future, so they’re £10 instead of £12. That’s a frankly unbeatable deal. The membership to also gives you access to the *gorgeous* bar area, for you and - as of two days ago - “up to five friends”, though that could change. The cinema only opened in March, so it’s pretty much brand new. It’s also privately owned and completely independent, so they can show whatever they want and don’t have to show ads. The fabulous programming is exactly what you’d want from a truly independent cinema. An inventive mix of current arthouse fare (Decision to Leave, Triangle, No Bears) and inspired repertory cinema. Their current Hollywood On Hollywood season is brilliant. Does Banshees of Inisherin count as mainstream? If so, the occasional mainstream film too. But there are also some terrific left-field choices. I highly recommend The Parking Lot Movie (2010), this Thursday, 8pm. There are two screens in total. I’ve only been in one of them (twice) so far, but it was extremely comfortable. I just love the Art Deco-inspired interior design and artwork choices too. Aside from the main bar area, there’s also a very private strip of intimate little booths, should you like that sort of thing. And other little seating areas too. Also, great bar (cheap Aperol Spritzes!) and great coffee. There’s even a shelf of second-hand film books for sale next to the box office. Honestly, it’s like they built the place from my dreams.
