“De oorzaken van het oprekken van deze levensfase zoekt Arnett in vier revoluties. Door de seksuele revolutie werd het geaccepteerd om, eventueel met vele partners, voor het huwelijk seks te hebben en samen te wonen. Door de feministische golven gingen meer vrouwen werken en aan hun carrière denken en dus kinderen krijgen uitstellen. Door de opkomst van jeugdcultuur stonden twintigers steeds ambivalenter tegenover volwassenheid. Stabiliteit werd niet langer als begeerlijk maar als beklemmend gezien. Waarom zou je niet wat langer plezier maken? Bovendien: als de verwachting is dat je 80 wordt, blijft er nog genoeg tijd over voor een volwassen leven.

Maar de belangrijkste oorzaak is volgens Arnett de verschuiving naar een economie die vooral draait om diensten, informatie en technologie. Wie tot de middenklasse wil behoren, met het bijbehorende levensgeluk, is in toenemende mate verplicht te studeren, en niet alleen een bachelor maar ook een master te doen. Omdat de verwachtingen van het werk bovendien erg hoog zijn, mede door de moeite die deze jongeren in hun studie hebben gestoken, doen ze er steeds langer over om de ideale baan te vinden.”

Eilish staat erom bekend om in al haar songs een sterke boodschap te steken, waardoor veel jeugd zich ermee verwant voelt. 

As long as I can have these emotionally intense experiences without the involvement of technology, I don’t feel the need to go completely offline. There are times when I get more distracted by scrolling and looking at others, but I am aware of its negative impact on my productivity. I think it’s the key to originality, to look more inside.

“In an artistic sense, Judit Kis fits well into the ‘intermedia’ category. She produces videos (https://vimeo.com/user9166179), photo documentations (here her older Tumblr site), prints, paintings, ceramics, performances and installations consisting of blankets, lightboxes and bricks. She prints sentences on textile and engraves words into ceramic bricks (all in English). Titles of some of her video works: I have never happened, Detoxification, Dedication, Disillusion, Distance, I love you, and a confronting one: Enough.

I was interested in an online exchange with her because of my recent work on mental states such as sadness, anger and loneliness and how those moods are generated by specific algorithms that make you feel bad. Her website (https://u-dyt.com) states that Judit Kis’ practice deals with integration, self-revelation and healing. “In a form of ‘confessional art’ my aim is to create works that are embracing vulnerability and engaging my audience to connect themselves and others on a deeper level.” Her recent projects emphasize the importance of self-care and rituals in a contemporary context, reflecting to our diverse cultural heritage that became more accessible by technology. According to Kis “art has a transformative power in our thinking and especially if this art can be bodily experienced and show progresses in personal improvement.””

“-----With increasing rates of anxiety, depression and mental health issues for youth in the past two decades, it may be the case that young people, no different from American society generally, are suffering from reality overload. Young people today have unprecedented access to information about which they may have little power to influence or change.

The powerful world of science fictionScience fiction and fantasy do not need to provide a mirror image of reality in order to offer compelling stories about serious social and political issues. The fact that the setting or characters are extraordinary may be precisely why they are powerful and where their value lies.My contribution in the forthcoming essay collection “Raced Bodies, Erased Lives: Race in Young Adult Speculative Fiction” discusses how race, gender and mental health for black girls is portrayed in speculative fiction and fantasy. 

My essay describes how contemporary writers take an aspect of what is familiar and make it “odd” or “strange” enough to give the reader psychic and emotional distance to understand mental health issues with fresh eyes.From the “Harry Potter” and “Hunger Games” series to novels like Octavia Butler’s “Parable of the Sower” and “Parable of the Talents” and Nancy Kress’ “Beggars in Spain,” youths see examples of young people grappling with serious social, economic, and political issues that are timely and relevant, but in settings or times that offer critical distance.

This distance gives readers an avenue to grapple with complexity and use their imagination to consider different ways of managing social challenges. What better way to deal with the uncertainty of this time than with forms of fiction that make us comfortable with being uncomfortable, that explore uncertainty and ambiguity, and depict young people as active agents, survivors and shapers of their own destinies?

Let them read science fiction. In it, young people can see themselves – coping, surviving and learning lessons – that may enable them to create their own strategies for resilience. In this time of COVID-19 and physical distancing, we may be reluctant for kids to embrace creative forms that seem to separate them psychologically from reality.But the critical thinking and agile habits of mind prompted by this type of literature may actually produce resilience and creativity that everyday life and reality typically do not.”
