“I am going to bring the sun back to this dreary place!”
To “celebrate” (ugh) Jaith getting his own plotline in book 1 of Anomaly when he previously only appeared at the very end, here’s a pic of younger Jaith at the climactic moment of book 1, new arm and all. Thanks Jaith for the extra work! Thanks to you I’m outlining/writing three plotlines at once. You’re lucky you’re an interesting character.
This lighting definitely doesn’t make him look like a villain. Nope. Also eye glow or no eye glow?
It’s been a moment since I posted art. I’ve been really busy with writing. I hope to post more soon.

today - I am taking a short break from KM Weiland's workbooks to write the Hook for the second draft of the laboratory arc, the first plotline in my series Anomaly. A small preview:
--
LIAN
In the sterile lab, under the bright and cold fluorescent lights, Lian ran on the treadmill.
There was no sound save for his feet pounding and the steady beep beep beep as the speed increased. Forty-one miles per hour. Forty-two. Forty-three. The scientists crowded around. Some took notes on their clear netscreens. Others observed his various stats on the large, overhead monitor: his weight, his heartrate, his blood pressure.
His heart worked like a piston in his chest. Lian’s legs were a blur. He typically ran in short bursts, never for long, full-on sprints. He couldn’t keep this up. Did the scientists care? Would they stop the treadmill before he collapsed?

a summary of the changes I have made to Anomaly:
Emeren's name changed to Lian
Aleto's plotline given to a new character, Kerris
Added a plotline for Jaith to run in tandem during the laboratory arc of the first book; Jaith's plot will be about him forming Solstice
Lian's character arc type changed to something else in the second book (no spoilers)
I'm still working through KM Weiland's Outlining Your Novel, Structuring Your Novel, and Creating Character Arcs workbooks for three plotlines, prioritizing Structuring. Progress is being made, I hope to share some art soon, particularly of my new character Kerris.

I have to redo my writer page introducing my WIP because my main character was renamed and another main character was added and now Jaith has a plotline in the first book where he didn’t before and wow so much to do okay back to work bye

Writers: do you normally write female or male characters??
Recently I realized that, as a girl, most of my characters are usually boys. That let me to question why I was doing that, and I think it's because it kinda gives me a sense of freedom. Like, as a writer, I'm intrigued to explore different perspectives and worlds I wouldn't be able to in real life, so I guess writing male characters is kind of my "what would it be like being a boy?". So now, out of curiosity I want to see if this happens to any of you or you just like to write from what you know.
Also, please join my other ongoing poll if you haven't voted yet!!
If anyone would like to share more about their characters, I'd be very happy to know.
Happy writing :)

third plot point, please come to me omg. i thought i had it but i do not
advice for new writers: don't make the first novel you're attempting to publish in a completely new universe, i.e. in something you have to worldbuild from scratch.. focus on plot structure and set it in modern times. because oof. I am wishing I did that now lol

If anyone is curious about what my April will look like and how I plan out my goals and what I’m working on at the moment ~
Basically I’m taking my first draft, looking at what’s wrong with it, and using these workbooks to make it an ~awesome~ outline (for both arcs, which look as though they will be two separate books). It’s taking a little longer than I thought but it will be so worth it.
I super wish my first attempt at a published book had been something way easier to plan out but well. If I can plan this one I can plan anything right?
Yay for Jaith in getting his own arc during the Laboratory Arc (but more work for me lol this one was not in the first draft)

First Exploratory Anomaly Draft Done
And I guess I wrote 100k words in three and a half months.
Tumblr media
😱😳😵
Idk I guess when I have something cool to work on suddenly I can just…..churn it out like no one’s business like holy shit?? 100k words in 106 days - that’s pretty awesome?
But I’m definitely not done. I’m calling this the “exploratory first draft” because the ending arc isn’t satisfying and there are several plot points that don’t make sense, but the world is there and the characters are there!
Next steps:
Take a small break. I kind of did this weekend but should probably take some more time
Outline outline outline. I’m using KM Weiland’s Outlining Your Novel and Structuring Your Novel workbooks to help me
Do a drawing challenge; might be part of my break, we will see
Add new plot points to existing draft; I already have a couple in mind I can add
More Anomaly is on the way! I’m super proud of myself for finishing this milestone and I’m excited to see where this story will take me next.

Happy Storyteller Saturday! A bit more of a craft question this week. How do you approach the events that happen off page? The secondary character's subplots, political machinations, character backstories etc. Is it important to your process to have them planned in detail or do you only address them when it affects the main plot?
Omg I’m so behind on these I’m so sorry ~
I like to know e v e r y t h i n g but at some point I have to tell myself to STOP or I will never write the actual story lol.
So - I might fill out a questionnaire or write a character sketch about the related thing but I try not to go *too* into detail for a couple of reasons; I like to keep it open-ended in case something changes in the future and, again, I’ll get super bogged down in the details and never move forward..
If it’s super interesting to me I might write it in my Upcoming Scenes doc that gets included in my overall word count so I don’t feel as though I’ve wasted time writing about secondary characters. I’ve already done this a lot with the secret anomaly ship. Omg are they fun to write and so cute 🥰
I do this way more iwth character subplots than any worldbuilding though.
Thank you for the ask!

why is it always, when I tell people about my progress on my novel, i’ll be like “I’ve written 93k words on my first draft!”
and then their response: “…uh, cool! How many pages is that?”
like??? Idk? Depends on the fucken font size? Page layout? Why is page number more tangible for some people to picture than word count?
So annoying

Dark Backstory Ideas ๋࣭ ⭑🦋๋࣭ ⭑.
As writers, we all have a sadist sharpening its knives within us. Here are some ways to make your characters' lives miserable, sympathetic, and *storyworthy*.
A character grew up in a sinister orphanage and narrowly escaped its dark, dark secrets.
A soldier witnessed unspeakable horrors on the battlehied, leaving deep emotional scars.
A reformed criminal who once led a life of violence, but is now trying to make amends.
A character was abducted at a young age and endured years of captivity before escaping
A character was betraye by a close family member, leading to a life filed with distrust and pain.
A character managed to break free from a dangerous cult, but is haunted by their past involvements in cruel rituals.
A person accidentally caused harm to someone in the past and has been losing sleep over guilt ever since.
A character battles a severe addiction that nearly destroyed their life before seeking help.
A friend turned out to be a traitor, leading to significant emotional trauma and a distrust for humanity (which we writers have even without a traitor of a friend?)
A character was left alone and abndoned in a desolate place befpre they fought tooth and nail to escape.
A character witnessed murder as a child
A character was subjected to unethical sceintific experinments that left both physical and emotional scars.
A character stumbled upon a sinister occult ritual in their peast, leaving them haunted..and a little different.
A character had their identity stolen and was wrongfully accused of crimes they didn't commit.

February Progress
Sorry I haven’t been posting much - I’ve just been super focused trying to get this first draft done! All of my goals ride on completing my first draft so I’m trying really hard to get it complete by the first quarter of 2024.
As you can see February had a bit of a slow start due to unforseen family issues cropping up, but it took off in no time. Looks like I got about 25k words written, which is only 5k less than January. Awesome!
Bad news is that my updates will continue to be slow until I get this done. I’m prioritizing ahead of all my other goals. The good news is that I just started Act 3 sooo we’re on the home stretch now! Yay! But it needs some outlining because it doesn’t have a satisfying ending yet…
Ups and downs but I’ll get through it. Okay March let’s go!!!!

very productive three day weekend despite my hazbin hotel hyperfixation, I literally had to turn off my internet a bit to get things done lmao
okay here is the progress I made this weekend on Anomaly:
revised the main antagonist's motivation and how he goes about it
wrote these changes into a new and improved Outline Version 1.5
redid my Scrivener setup (again) so there are no longer chapter numbers, not necessary for this point in the draft. Now it's by scene and not by chapter
added changes to the rough draft for the parts that already happened; I guess these are edits and I know you're not supposed to edit your rough draft yet but oh well
finished a Shraya & Aleto pic and started a new funny meme pic with three other characters
started an "Upcoming Scenes" doc that contributes to my overall count, I really should have had this earlier
reached 72k words
I'm pretty happy with the progress, but there's always more to be done! okay new week GO!
