Hey Doris and Dawn! Did you two hear about the leaked Disney lost media pilots today? Apparently some random Disney employee just uploaded them online??? There's an Owl House one, Gravity Falls one, etc. etc.
Yes! And if anyone hasn't, take a look!

It's hard to get shows like this greenlit today...BUT, artists are coming together and still creating pilots and bringing them to the world with the help of viewer funding! Looking at you Digital Circus and Lackadaisy.
Always do you best to support the people making these shows and pilots. The networks don't really treat them so well. Look for their patreon, ko-fi accounts, or if you can't help that way, share their work. repost, retweet (reX? no, that sucks retweet). build a community and get the word out!

So, Wendy eh? :3
Yeah...what about her? Did she say anything about me? I would hate if she was talking about me. But tell me if she was talking about me. Not that I talk about her. Just curious, you know, like for laughs.
Tell me if she says anything.

Hello L-i-n-u-s-k-a,
How does voice acting work? Well, this goes back to how living toons were made. Like the first living cartoon Lester Light, we're all a manipulation of light at our core. At first, there was no sound except a small buzz. Kind of like tuning a radio, If any of you know what I mean. Things advanced when it was discovered that light can carry sound. Photons could be made to interact with sound at a low level at first. With this discovery, Toons were able to make noise. Not talk, but create crude imitations of recorded sounds like whistles and musical instruments. A slide whistle for reaching, xylophone for walking. I think creators became a little too excited. Toons couldn't do a lot without being quiet. Sneaking on tip toes could still be heard.
Tumblr media
But, what about talking? silence was great for musical performances in films and with most movies being silent, Toons were fine being held to just random noises. No one was eager to hear us talk until Talkies started being shown. After that, there was a race to get toons talking to keep up with the industry. This was a little more frustrating. At first, actors would record voices and it would be put together in a huge library. Voices were garbled and sounded like they were underwater.
Tumblr media
Some of the earliest storage banks for cartoon voices.
Soon, there was a demand for the walk around performing Toon. something that could interact with audiences and perform on the spot without needing to do pantomime to communicate. Fortunately, Light can not only carry sound, but can manipulate it. Tuning was done with the help of a voice actor to give Toons a more permanent voice. Voice actor became a very important part o the method, and still are. Helping carve out our inflections, accents, and a good chunk of our personality.
Tumblr media
Pest control mascot "Martin Mouse" has a vocal tuning test performed.
The bond between voice actor and Toon is a sacred one. Though today it's a little colder with executive input. One cartoon could have multiple voices depending on the contract, and some are dubbed by celebrities in films with no tuning. This is considered quicker and cheaper, but it's less personal and hard when you've already formed a bond with your original voice actor. There are some toons who are lucky enough to keep their voices, even long after their actor has passed, like Snoopy. When he laughs, it's still with the sounds of Bill Menendez.
Now, on whether or not we're dependent on the lines of the voice actor. Yes and no. They set our tones and so much of who we are, but I can go out and talk to people on my own and form words based on the wavelength and tone I was given. However, there are things I cant say because it was never laid out. If I wanted to say #@% or *^&$@!, I would need a new voice to help carve that out because my original voice has been gone for a long time.
Another bit of information I'd like to bring up. We can talk around freely, but if we appear in film, tv or ads, our contracts always makes sure the voice actor is paid. When we're on screen we're carrying a part of them and they should always get the credit they deserve.
Thank you so much for the question!
I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more of Toon History,
Doris

How does voice acting work for cartoons? Are they voice providers like for vocaloid or are you completely dependent on the lines a voice actor records?
I really love this question. Wish there was a way to forward a message on tumblr, but I'll make sure this is answered on the Doris and Dawn QnA page!

Don't worry, WE HAVEN'T BEEN ERASED, OR REPAINTED, OR REDEDIGNED IN ANY WAY!
But we are putting some new things together that will be revealed very soon (Next month!). We'll get back to answering your questions and dropping some Toon History knowledge too. Love hearing from all of you, it's just been a little tricky figuring out one of next months new...things. You'll see.

For both of you, ever seen a analog "horror" called angel hare?
Dude, I love Analog Horror! Especially one’s dealing with toons. Checking out the Tom and Jerry one now. Reminds me of all the creepy first toon attempts that Doris calls “History,” Like the Stick figures. It’s nightmare fuel.
We talked about analog horror before. Didn’t get beyond trying to explain the concept. Doris is not into/confused by it. Real quote “So if I watch Aliens on vhs, does that make it analog horror? Wouldn’t any movie on tape be analog horror?” I said it’s like found footage. She said “Okay, so I find a copy of Aliens somewhere. Does that count?”

Bit of an odd question: Do you know what became of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit? He's always been a favorite of mine and I hope he's doing alright after the whole kerfuffle with his trademark in 2006
Don't worry, he hasn't been erased like some unused toons from the past. Barely even changed after getting his blue shorts. Disney characters are well guarded and it's hard to catch a major one walking around in the public without some kind of protection. But, from what I've seen, he's happier now that he's back at Disney. Still hasn't been given a voice. Maybe it'll be too much work to set him up with one. Or maybe he likes staying as close to his original design as possible. I can completely understand that. Now has he gotten over his whole Mickey jealousy thing? Looks like it, but being around all that mouse merchandise. I'm sure he still wonders what could have been. He certainly did a lot of that before being signed back to them.
Still hoping he gets more shorts soon.
Thank you for asking,
Doris

Hey, dawn has doris ever told you about, outside of cartoon making, humans didn't exactly like toons.
You say that like things have changed. I've seen the Oscars, I'm very aware of how we're looked at.

Hey, thanks for putting up an ask blog! Don't know if tumblr is the best place to put it for social media engagement, but then again Neil Gaiman seems to be enjoying himself so who am I to judge?
I have a whole bunch of questions, and I'm not sure if it'd be annoying to flood your inbox with them, so feel free to pick and choose any of these to reply.
Questions for Dawn: who would you consider to be the animated 'it' girl right now?
What do you think about the recent trend of 'fleshwashing' that Disney has been pushing when it comes to remakes? Is this part of a bias against toons when it comes to casting?
In your opinion, who do you think is the best 'old-school' toon who still actively performs? Questions for Doris: Has toontown managed to avoid the plague of gentrification that hit a lot of other older neighborhoods in LA?
Is there a union for animated actors? If there is, how effective is it in your opinion? Have things gotten better or worse for animated actors over the years?
Did you ever get to know your animator? If not, would you have wanted to know them?
We should probably get a reddit at some point. Everyone on tumblr has been amazing though. We do have an instagram, @dawn_doodle and @dorisdoodle_toon.
There's also a fanmade discord! One we need to check on more after we're done...preparing some new things.
Who do I think is the current it girl of animation? It changes so fast, but my vote right now is POMNI! Who doesn't feel like Pomni like daily? Also, indie!
Tumblr media
Check back in a month when my answer may change again!
What do we think of all these live action remakes? I still don't mind them too much, but Avatar on netflix might be unnecessary. I'm starting to wear thin. Doris gave a rambling answer on this before and I don't think her opinion has changed.
Best old School toon still in business? I think we actually have an agreement on this one and that's this 2D Girl boss!
Tumblr media
Was Toon town able to avoid any gentrification? Here's Doris with a history lesson:
As some people know, ToonTown was left to the toons, and that was great. We could vote for changes in the town and run it ourselves, but that didn't mean we were separate from California and certain laws. So it was devastating when it was decided that the land we lived on wasn't fully ours and the decision to build a freeway system was still being considered. This was in the 50s and I had already moved out of ToonTown, but I heard about the protests and letters written to Earl Warren.
None of it helped, and in 1956, Eisenhower signed the highway act and a freeway was constructed. So the town wasn't as saved as the movie "Who Frames Roger Rabbit" lets you believe.
Tumblr media
Since the toons owned ToonTown, they couldn't just completely destroy it. We were just told to move. So the town is split up into districts. There's one near Disneyland, another a few streets from Universal. Always near studios. They like keeping an eye on their assets. So at least we got to keep the town in some way.
Is there a union for toons? There have been attempts. But in the end were considered intellectual property of the studios. fully owned and by contract from the moment the first line is sketched. A lot of older toons have a little more freedom from those contracts. By older, I'm talking Bugs Bunny and the Peanuts kids. That's starting to get harder though as studios are stating to hold a tighter grip on animation. It's less a creative thought process and more business. Doris says it's colder in a behind closed doors way. I say that cold is starting to leak into the outside. So yeah, no union, especially for newly drawn stars, and well...things aren't exactly getting better.
Did we get to know our creators?
Doris did!
Tumblr media
We all do I guess while being drawn. but it's not as personal now. I was kinda made through a committee. So there are artists who really care and I would've wanted to get to know them, but there are also execs, studio owners, managers, all hovering around to check on their investment. And once approved, you are under studio control. It's nice if the artists can stick around at the studio, but most times they're laid off once the creation is done and they need to go work at another place. This goes into that whole colder thing. From what Doris has shown me, it was a little more fun before. Animators and toons would just hang out I guess.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They would even have fun with their voice actors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today, studios want big celebrities to give us our voices. So they usually come in to lay down the track and then leave with the paycheck. Not all though, I heard Jack Black like to see the characters he's given a voice too. It just doesn't happen often.
Sorry it took a while to get to your question! We're trying to get a few things going right now so our timing is way off.
Also, a list of questions is always good, keep em coming!

This though sent me into a little panic for a while So I asked Harold. I asked him a few times. A lot honestly. He got back to me and I feel better now. Short answer is no, but here's what he said.

Since you drink Doris, are you a hard drinker or a sweet drinker? I prefer sweet drink like strawberry champagne and all that
This is a little embarrassing. I'm not proud of it, but I only drink when I'm upset. Like really upset. Never sweet. Not a good habit, but from the 40s to the 70s it was something that was just everywhere.
