Complex Iteration vii.
From my photographic project.

This work breaks down into four sections with the working titles:
Study of Form.
Selected Forms.
Simple Iterations.
Complex Iterations.
Starting with a photographic study of a natural object I then move on to digitally collaging the photograph inspired by the repetitive mathematics that describe the natural world, explaining why we see similarities on small and larger scales, for instance the branches of a tree looking similar to the whole tree or the coastline looking like the smaller rocks that make it up, the list is near endless. Fascinating!
I then either produce a ‘simple iteration’ just a few steps into the repeated iterations or I produce a sheet of forms playing with iterations around the axis of the original photograph from the many forms produced I choose a few ‘selected forms’
Sometimes that is where it ends but sometimes I take either the selected form or simple iteration and collage further creating a much more complex image using the same repetitive process of collaging.
Of course I am applying the steps rather rigidly here, in nature the fractal shapes are non linear distorting over time which is something I would like to introduce to the work as I progress.
Something that arises is spontaneous recognisable forms within the images, from faces and insect like details, fish like objects to cosmic looking pattering.
I’m considering making some Cyanotypes of these in the future.

A personal illustration from the past. I remembered it recently when I was walking and spotted a brood of ducklings. I used to live in a house with a lake and every year I would promise myself I would not count the ducklings, they have a terribly tough struggle to live in the early part of their lives. Of course as the numbers inevitably dwindled I would count them and root for them.
Most however had a brief existence but as I would watch them flit around on the water as the sun began to set it occurred to me that perhaps they live life at a different pace, on a different timescale to us?
I mused:
A drop of water, splashed from the pond by a sibling landed on your cheek. Lingered for a moment like a tear before returning to the source.
A leaf spiralling in the backdrop, slow motion falling.
I hope your few days stretched out
like endless sunny months for you.
And that is what the illustration was about and why it is called Stretch.

The writer Philip K Dick died on this day in 1982. I am a huge fan of his work, his strange twisted worlds where it is rarely evident what is real and what is not. I have been meaning to do a portrait of Palmer Eldritch for a while now.
Here is a private commission from a few years back which was inspired by Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep and it’s cinematic incarnation Blade Runner.

A strange encounter with a fly begins a spiralling series of ever more distressing and hallucinatory experiences for an alcoholic father trying to come to terms with the loss of his wife many years earlier. As he tries to make sense of the time that has passed since her death and the strange and terrifying apparitions his world begins to unravel. Is it his drinking? Lack of sleep? Is this madness? Or something else?
