Today and last night was Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day which in its full name is Yom Hazikaron laShoah ve-laG'vurah (Hebrew: יום הזיכרון לשואה ולגבורה‎) which translates to 'Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day'). As such, I thought it fitting to share this picture I took at the entrance into Canada's National Holocaust Monument in the nation's capital, Ottawa when I was there back in July 2019. It's a day that has more and more meaning to me with each passing year as I've seen the rise of casual anti-Semitism and its acceptance here in North America. If one had told me in the 1980s and 1990s that the climate in the world towards the Jewish people would be what it is I would have been unable to believe it. As far as I was concerned, I was as Canadian & American as any other kid. I've encountered hate myself directly since then more times than I'd like to remember and more blatantly as the years have progressed. This past Feb would have been my grandfather's 100th birthday. He was a Jewish partisan during WWII, living in the forests & fighting Nazis whenever they could. I remember I once asked him - hoping I'd hear a badass, heroic story - if the Jewish partisans did a lot of coordinated operations against the Nazis with the Polish partisans & he looked me directly in the eyes for a second & said "Nah!" with a dismissive shake of his head & a disgusted expression. I think he would've spat if we hadn't been sitting indoors. That was the level of animosity against Jews during WWII where countries that were overrun by one of the most evil regimes ever known had people fighting the evil who couldn't put their hate of the Jews aside to kick the murderous black shirted hordes out. Sickening. I never understood it. It seemed so idiotic. But with each passing year, I'm understanding it more and more unfortunately. Never Again isn't just a catch phrase. We have to ensure it is a reality every day of every year or evil will rise again. This is also why Jews need our own state where we are always safe & accepted. Had we had one in the 1930s, 6 MILLION PEOPLE including my great aunts, uncles, and grandparents wouldn't have disappeared into a train. 🌴🌴🌴 Palm Trees swaying in tbe cool tropical breeze on the beach shores of a great ocean 🌴🌴🌴 I took this photo on my Nokia N80 back in February 2007. It was a Symbian OS smartphone before the iPhone and subsequently Android redefined the term. It also had a lens crafted by Carl Zeiss Optics for "high detailed imaging" (relatively speaking) captured with its then cutting edge 3 megapixel camera. I was on a random road trip down through the Florida Keys with my buddy @jblustienne. We were on a mission that day to try multiple delicious key lime pies at the side of the road in the Florida Keys. That and just the enjoyment of seeing the beauty and majesty of nature in tropical paradise along the Atlantic coast. It was a good day. Seen through the window, the Scarborough RT S Series SRT Symmetry on the TTC's Line 3 Toronto's TTC have recently recommended the 2023 retirement of these cars & the existing Line 3 after they have been rolling along since the 1980s. I took some photos inside them back in October 2020 when I was out that way collecting some paper transfers before they too get retired (yes, I'm a huge nerd 🤓). As promised yesterday, a different look at the same car. Still symmetrical but .... different. I like how both photos turned out so wanted to make them a pair/set next to each other in my feed. Memories of Toronto. Specifically, the TTC streetcar, aka the CLRV pictured here. The Canadian Light Rail Vehicle (CLRV) was the standard sight to see in the streets of Toronto for my entire life's memory until recently. From the 1980s through November 2017 when I took this photo one night until right before the COVID19 pandemic when they were all decommissioned by the TTC on December 29, 2019 these were super common sights in the streets of Toronto. It's sort of strange that I haven't really noticed their absence but then again who has really been doing much traveling anywhere in the city since March 2020? Day 151! Queen's Park where the Ontario Provincial Parliament back in October 2019 with my Google Pixel 2 XL using the Night Sight setting which still blows me away today when I use it. Got low to the ground, playing with the angle & perspective of the photo a bit to change up the mood when I took it and still got a lot of love for the symmetry of the building. A lot less faith in general in the majority of the people inside of it who are supposedly representing us. As the days of spring warm the air around us in Toronto I'm thinking back to this view of the skyline from Tommy Thompson Park which I took back in June 2020 on my Google Pixel 2 XL. 🌈🌈🌈‼️🤯 We've all seen the double rainbow...but how many of us can say we've seen a TRIPLE RAINBOW??? I think this is where I make a joke about pots of gold at the end of rainbows given that it's St Patrick's Day but all I'll do is wish everyone a happy second St Paddy's in Lockdown in Toronto. Wow. I thought the 🌈🌈🌈 was a pretty impressive sight to see and I'm not sure if it's common or not but I thought it was pretty spectacular and special to see and wanted to share it.
