Anatomy of a Fall [Anatomie d'une chute] (2023)
Tumblr media
Snoop is a very good boye. Even the best boye. In addition to being extremely cute, he is unexpectedly pivotal to the plot of the film, and it's absolutely shocking what they were able to pull off with the dog actor. HOW DID THEY DO IT!?!? Daniel's experiment, lacing Snoop's chow with Aspirin to see if it has the same effects as a time in the past when he thinks the pet might have eaten his father's drugged vomitus, also highlights the duality of that character. The 11-year-old is incredibly astute and observant, not caving to veiled intimidation from the prosecuting attorney and choosing to remain in the courtroom despite the judge's wishes to "protect" him. What she doesn't understand, and what the court system is poorly structured to handle well, is that there is no real way to protect him. The damage has already been done. Hiding truth further can only twist the knife even more. Because he is still just a kid. The camera often finds Daniel among the crowd in the room, quiet and still and somber. He seems to know there's no winning for him; even if his mother is acquitted and even if that acquittal reflects the truth, innocence already damaged by an accident which affected his vision is further lost to the proceedings of justice. The dogfood experiment shows he's intelligent in trying to replicate an event to prove a hypothesis, it's something only a child would think to do, not fully reflecting on potential negative consequences.
Damage is something that, at least in a case like this, is unavoidable and in a fashion almost by design. In the Grenoble courtroom, the camera takes on a very observant vocabulary, glancing about at those in attendance, lingering uncomfortably on a witness to scrutinize, even at one point doing a double-take as the judge leaves unexpectedly. This subjectivity defines the arguments made by prosecution and defense in this case where hard, material evidence is scant. It's all about A truth rather than THE truth. This comes with ugly suppositions laced with misogyny and homophobia toward the defendant. If an author writes something, she must be capable of enacting it! If a woman enjoys having her ego stroked by an interviewer, she must be adulterous! This justice is in many ways theatre, not a strictly clinical, concrete deposition.
Sandra Hüller's turn as Mme Sandra Voyter is layered and fraught. It's refreshing to see a portrayal of a character like this not purely as victim or culprit. It's clear through subjective fragments that she's done things wrong, or handled things in an insensitive way. But it would be wrong to blame M Voyter's suicide, if indeed that is the case, on her. The film remains firmly agnostic to the actual sequence of events and leaves it to the jury and viewer. The dead man's is only a sonic presence, blasting music to potentially disrupt Sandra's interview when alive and recorded having an argument in the trial. He is seen in flashback when the recording is played, but critically the film cuts back to the court when violence erupts, denying us the facts. Sandra is entrapped, but prickly, put on trial by jury and public alike.

JK Rowling keeps getting fucking worse. Maybe she should spend less time ranting on Twitter at every little provocation, and more time taking her own advice to not "press send without thinking 'I should maybe check my source for this'"
