Witchcraft for the Home: Herbs and Spices
Tumblr media
Kitchen and Cottage witchcraft is really what I focus on and I love to do little things to encorperate little things into my every day practice and a great way to do that is in the kitchen. So I’m going to list some of my go to herbs and spices that I use. A page straight from my Book of Shadows DISCLAIMER: NOT ALL HERBS FROM YOUR LOCAL WITCH SHOP ARE FOOD GRADE. MAKE SURE TO ASK FIRST. USING HERBS THAT AREN’T FOOD GRADE TASTE AWFUL AT THE LEAST AND CAN MAKE YOU SICK AT THE WORST.
Basil- Good for Protection. A favorite for pasta dishes. Use pesto as a good way to incorporate it. It’s also really good in soups.
Bay Lead- My favorite use for Bayleaf is healing, but not really physical wellbeing. I use it motly for emotional and spiritual healing. Really great after a long, stressful day. Cooks best in slow cooker meals like soups, stews, and pulled meats
Cinnamon- Protection and passion. I always find that it always brings a sense of warmth to whatever I’m making. I use it in a lot of sweets or whenever I’m making Chai.
Clove- Brings in warmth and casts out negativity. Clove is my favorite spice so I’ll add it to just about anything that’s “spicy”
Nutmeg- Strengthens divination. Nutmeg is really good in fall flavored baking and warm flavored stews, like those with a tomato base.
Pepper- Used for protection. I like to think of it as sort of a ‘bite’ at the things you need protection from. Actively expelling instead of putting up a “wall” like cinnamon.
Poppy seeds- Prosperity. Lemon poppy seed muffins are an amazing good luck charm to use before a a big test or meetings.
Rosemary- Purification, intellectual protection. Rosemary is a sort of go all herb. It goes great in roasts and traditional English and American cooking. Use a spring of rosemary on roast veggies, chicken, or steaks.  It’s also good in homemade bread and can be used during Sabbats and Holidays as part of the feast.
Thyme- Divination and clarity. This is another sort of ‘old school’ herb. You can find it in a lot of simplistic cooking (three or four ingrediant meals) and in a lot of italian food. It pairs great with marinara, eggplants, and peppers. Roasted egg plant with olive oil and thyme is one of my favorites.
Vanilla- Love. I put a drop of vanilla in my coffee almost every morning to try and bring love into my day. It works great if you have a stressful job you need to remember to stay caring and level headed at (childcare, health care, support lines). I also like to use it in small short bread or sugar cookies and use those as offerings (particularly to Aphrodite)

Cast iron pan blesssing to say at first wash
Mother Goddess, Father Green
Bless this tool I have made clean
I promise to season
I promise to dry
I promise to help it thrive
Let it not crack
Let food leave no track
Let it not burn as I carefully learn
With your blessing
There will be no distressing

Ginger has a variety of uses, it promotes Love, energy, monetary success, and healing. While the Cinnamon has the same, plus protection and psychic awareness. Goulash, devine beef stew for your crockpot
Sometimes you don’t need a lot of ingredients to make something that tastes deep and rich. It comes down proportions and technique. Goulash, a beef stew seasoned with paprika, is one of those dishes.
So, here hoes (my version)!
Tumblr media
I bought this pre-chopped stew beef at a a pretty good price. Sometimes butchers make mistakes or have odd ends they toss together and the result is discounted beef that saves you time. Don’t be afraid to ask at your counter. Tell your butcher your budget and ask for whatever stew beef he might have. You would be surprised at what they can do for you.
Let’s get to the onions before we cook our beef, though, as onion is key to this dish.
Tumblr media
Yes, two whole onions minced and browned in a pan. I dope mine up with a little balsamic syrup to bring out their sweetness which is what you’re after. You can use a teaspoon of white or brown sugar as well or none at all, but it takes longer to brown your onions without it.
Tumblr media
Ok, for this dish, you gotta do a thorough browning of your onions because we want them to virtually disappear into the stew. Plus, we’re after sweetness. So, you cook on low heat until you see them get brown, then add water, cook all the water out and repeat. I add and cook off the water at least 3-4 times. NO GARLIC IN THIS DISH!!! Hisssssss!
Tumblr media
I get my pan smoking and sear my beef (seasoned with salt and pepper) before it goes in the crock pot. I then deglaze with red wine (that’s what’s bubbling). You can skip the red wine if you prefer, of course! However, I like what it adds in depth. Also, don’t worry about cooking the beef through. The crock pot can do the rest.
Tumblr media
Add 1-2 cups of beef broth, a whole jar or tin of crushed tomatoes (I always recommend jarred or preserves if you have them, the canned ones are too salty imo). Add a Bay leaf, some chopped fresh parsley if you have it, a couple teaspoons of sweet paprika (Hungarian is really nice) and season with salt and pepper. Let the crockpot do its thing. 4 hours on high is more than sufficient but you can do a low and slow for up to 8 hours.
When you are about a half hour from meal time, add several tablespoons of tomato paste, more paprika and then thicken with a cornstarch slurry. You DO NOT want to add any flour roux or cornstarch thickeners right from the start. I’ve had those burn to the bottom of the crockpot, not good!
Tumblr media
Finally, you have this amazingly, deceptively simple but hearty stew. The beef melts in your mouth. I serve mine with my grandma’s homemade bread or over spaetzle if I get ambitious (but pretty much any starch pairs nicely).
Enjoy, my peeps, and happy eats!

So I'm going through my extensive cook book collection today to meal plan for the week and I came across this cook book
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
It's a Church cookbook compilation of their congregation's favorite recipes. Things like this:
Tumblr media
And it made me think, a Coven Cookbook, filled with witch tips similar to this:
Tumblr media
And words wisdom from coven members!
The book is filled with like "scriptures to read over your children" and stuff and I thought it would be cool to do a witchy equivalent.
I don't belong to a Coven but I do have a decent amount of Followers. . . Do you guys want to start a Tumblr Coven Cookbook with me? 🤣😁
You can reblog or send me an ask with your recipe/tip/ Words of Wisdom. I plan to add them all to a Google doc at first and then maybe do an e-book? If this actually turns fruitful (obviously it would be free since I'm just compiling).

Here is a little step by step for how I make my homemade tea bags, this recipe is also one I like to breathe in while it seeps. Lavender helps with relaxation and juniper can help deal with deep seeded anxieties, I call this blend Anxie-Tea. 😁
Tumblr media
In a coffee filter put roughly 2 tablespoons of lavender buds and 1 tablespoon of juniper berries.
Tumblr media
Fold over one side...
Tumblr media
Then the other.
Tumblr media
Fold that in half.
Tumblr media
Fold down the top twice about 2cm each and staple it (You may have to tuck the edges in).
Tumblr media
Let seep until it reaches the desired strength and add your sweetener of choice (or not).
To make this a nice little morning ritual have either moss agate or rose quartz on your person while you drink and repeat your anti-anxiety mantra or just reflect on your anxiety and let the tea soothe it away.🤗🍵

🍲 Cock-a-leeky Soup 🍲
Cock-a-Leeky soup (chicken and leek) is a really old and traditional Scottish soup. I make it with rice but you can add pearled barley instead if you want. This Scottish soup is traditionally served as the starter on Bruns night. It is delicious as an autumn and winter soup. I have to say it is really light so you might need something on the side to make it a full dinner. I love eating them with fresh warm cheddar scones.
I discovered this soup not a long time ago and I love it. It is really easy to do and really cheap as well. It makes my home smells really good!
🔮Magical correspondences🔮
This soup can be made to attract protection and love. In any case, if you to attract stir your soup clockwise. I like to bless my ingredients before I start cooking and also I light a white candle and meditate a few breath on the intention I want to infuse when cooking.
Leek: protection, love
Onion: protection, lust
Thyme: Love
🍲 Cock-a-Leeky 🍲
Preparation: 10 minutes
Cooking: about 1 hour
4 portions
Ingredients:
1 chicken breast
1L vegetable broth or chicken broth
1 big leek (or 2 medium size ones) cut in thin slivers
1 onion cut in thin cubes
2 thym sprigs
6 dry prunes cut in small cubes
50g dry rice (about 1/3 cup)
20g butter (about 2tbsp)
1 glass of dry white wine (optional)
Recipe:
Bring the broth (and the wine) to a boil, add the chicken and let it simmer.
Cook the leek and onion in a pan with the butter and the thyme on medium-low heat for about 15 minutes or until they are transparent, tender and smell really good
Pour the vegetables into the broth with the chicken. Let it simmer for about 30 minutes
Take the chicken breast out of the broth and shred it in fine pieces than put it back to the soup
Add the rice and the dry prunes and let it simmer for 15 minutes
Enjoy!
Notes:
It will last a couple of days in a air tight container in the fridge.
