5 Facts About Queen Elizabeth
Queen Elizabeth was unarguably a fashion setter. Both in makeup and wardrobe, the Queen had such outrageous taste for her time that she is still talked about often. I’ll spare you the political side of the "Virgin Queen" you most likely read about in history class and get right down to the extravagant ways she is so well known for.
Tumblr media
1.) HER MAKEUP
Queen Elizabeth started her heavy makeup debut in 1956 following a bout of smallpox that left her with many scars on her face. The makeup was high fashion, but not worn by Elizabeth prior to the small pox. It was made of white lead and vinegar, which slowly poisoned the Queen.
  2.) HER GLOVES
It was no rumor that Queen Elizabeth loved her gloves. She had an estimated 2,000 pairs of gloves that were the envy of every fashion minded woman.
  3.) HER TEETH
Although many people believed that dental statue was not of importance at the time of her reign, it was very important to the Queen. Because the means to dental hygiene was so unknown, Elizabeth had so many rotted teeth that her cheeks started to cave in. In attempts to show beauty and health she insisted on stuffing her cheeks with rags to counteract the appearance of decay.
  4.) HER WARDROBE
Elizabeth loved ornate dresses, yet she did not spend nearly as much as other would have guessed. A perk of being Queen was that she consistently had robes given to her as gifts. Many times the queen would also have her dresses restyled to look different by changing the embellishments or removing the sleeves. She saved by giving her dresses to her ladies in waiting after she had worn them instead of paying them.
Many speculated that it was because she had been so lacking as a child. Although she was a born princess her father was not kind, and her nurse had to write to him begging for means to provide her with enough to keep Elizabeth warm in the winter.
  5.) THE FIRST WRISTWATCH
Elizabeth wore the first wristwatch to appear in England. The watch was attached to a bracelet given to her by a suitor, before that the only timepieces were pocket watches.
Tumblr media
This portrait of Elizabeth I from the studio of Marcus Gheeraerts c.1595 shows wrinkles and ageing, the portrait was never seen by the public, as the Queen was angered by signs of aging.

6 Painful Beauty Trends
Tumblr media
1.) Permanent Makeup
Permanent makeup is a cosmetic technique which consists of using permanent pigmentation of the dermis(tattoos) to produce a design that resembles makeup. Various kinds of permanent makeup include eyeliner, eyebrows, gums (Malian tribe women), and other enhancing colors.
Tumblr media
2.) Pipe-stem Corsets
The first hourglass corsets were invented around 1830. Although finding someone with a Pipe-stem waist is rare this is still being practiced in North America. The hourglass silhouette is achieved after many years of wearing a corset designed to extend the circumference of the waist above the natural wasteline. The added pressure is uncomfortable (to say the least), and can be hard on the ribcage.
Tumblr media
3.) Bagel Heads
Bagel Head injections have been a trend in Asia for some years now. They are the result of 400 cc of saline interjected into the forehead, the practitioner then makes the bagel shape by pressing his or her thumb in the middle of the blob. It is temporary and considered a beauty treatment.
Tumblr media
4.) Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentations have become a very common, yet completely insane part of beauty in Northern America. It is as mysterious to people from other regions as foot binding or lip plates are to us. The procedure is one of the most expensive cosmetic surgery's available. It involves an incision under the breast, and a silicon or saline implant(as shown above) being placed above/under the pectoral muscle, the incision is then stitched closed. Recovery time is 6 weeks to 6 months and can involve many complications.
Tumblr media
5.) Foot Binding
Foot Binding is the custom of painfully binding the feet of young girls to prevent further growth. This began in 10 century China as a way to display status, and soon became a symbol of beauty which lasted many years. It started to die down in the early 20th century, but not before leaving the majority of the women who practiced it with lifelong disabilities related to the procedure.
Tumblr media
6.) Lip Plates
While most of us in the US are watching our figures and tanning before the big day, many South American and African women are getting Lip Plates put in as a pre-wedding custom. 6-12 months before the wedding the other village women cut a hole in the bride-to-be's lip and fill it with a wooden peg. Over the next year it is continually replaced with a larger peg every few weeks. When the plate reaches a desirable size it is replaced with a clay plate. If teeth become a problem, the bottom teeth are pulled to accommodate the plate.

Lorde, Kelly/Sharon Osbourne, and One Direction Celebrity Makeup Collections… Wait, One Direction?
You heard it! 1D is yet again teaming up with MUAs to create an all new collection of Makeup! Niall Horan proudly took to his Twitter earlier in the week to post this photo captioned “that good I'm gon[n]a start wearing it myself."
Tumblr media
This time last year the boy band launched their first line called “Little Things”(I lol’d at the name.) The current collection includes 5 Lipsticks (Moments, Be Mine, I Wish, Rock Me, and I Want with a member’s signature on each), 5 Lip Polishes (Harry Loves Strawberry, Zayn Loves Watermelon, Louis Loves Vanilla, Niall Loves Cherry, and Liam Loves Blueberry), 3 Cheek Tints, and 5 colors of Nail Polish. The shades were set to coincide with each member’s favorite flavor.

In other Celebrity makeup news, you can now officially buy the Lorde collection from M-A-C “Pure Herione.” The limited-edition lipstick/eye liner duo is all you need for Lorde’s favorite look! While we were surprised to see the collection has only 2 items, it is on par with the less is more individuality Lorde always brings to the table!

Last, but certainly not least! Mother and daughter Kelly and Sharon Osbourne have teamed up yet again! This time it is a limited-edition two-part collaboration with M-A-C! The colors vary a lot between the two, I personally adore Kelly's collection.

Affordable 3D Makeup Printer Could Change the Makeup Industry
We are constantly looking for up and coming tends in the makeup world, recently we caught wind of one that is truly innovative!
Grace Choi, a Harvard Business student, decided to make a change for the better in the makeup industry. Tired of over paying for the colors she wanted on her makeup pallet, she set out to create a 3D Makeup Printer, and the self proclaimed "serial inventor" did just that.
Tumblr media
“The makeup industry makes a whole lot of money on a whole lot of bullsh__. They charge a huge premium on something that tech provides for free. That one thing is color.” Choi says in a recent Techcrunch video.
Choi also gives a demo of her printer, talks about prices, and how it will work in the video. Ideally, the price point will be around $300 mark, and the printer will be able to print eye shadow, lipstick, foundation, blush, and much more using your computer or phone. The product will be FDA approved, and maintain substantial quality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although the printer is not currently for sale, you are able to register for updates and get on the list to preorder once it becomes available.
You are also given a referral code which links you to the website, and gives you faster access based on referrals. Here is ours: http://l.aunch.us/duY0

MALEFICENT – All about the makeup that made the movie magnificent.
Tumblr media
For months everyone one has been talking about the new Disney spin on the old Disney villainess, Maleficent. The much anticipated movie was released just over a week ago, but has already earned a worldwide total of $335,470,000. It has much surpassed Disney’s projected $60 million opening, and had the 3rd highest earnings for a solo female star in opening weekend history. Even with these huge accomplishments, the movie maintained only sub-par reviews. The script was highly criticized (I personally LOVED it.), and received an average of 5.6/10 on Rotten Tomatoes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So why are so many people going to see it? What makes it a must see movie? Well let’s see, a classic Disney villainess, amazing special effects, Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, and… Oh yeah, the most visually stimulating makeup we have seen from Disney all year of course! Although the makeup/effects were originally designed by seven-time Academy Award-winning special makeup effects artist Rick Baker, Angelina’s makeup artist of nine years, Toni G, also worked on the look. The collaboration transformed Angelina into Maleficent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After watching the movie, it is almost impossible to forget the big full red lips( MAC’s Pro Longwear Lipglass in Anthurium), pale blushless-skin (MAC Select Cover Concealer), or dark, magical eyes that made her a most beautiful villainess. But the defining moment of transformation was unarguably the prosthetics!
Tumblr media
Rumor has it that Disney executives were very worried about losing the natural beauty of their main character. So when prosthetics were being discussed they were rather nervous, but Jolie insisted on owning the role completely, and in the end, they decided to go ahead with the cheek prosthetics and a subtle nose piece. Long time special makeup effects artist Ajent Tuiten, was chosen to make the prosthetics. He also did the daily applications of the hyper-chiseled cheekbones. Jolie's makeup was said to have taken 3 hours a day to apply, and one hour a day to remove for at least 70 days on set. The days sometimes lasted up to 16 hours.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is so much more to say about this movie, but we would hate to say anything that would be considered a spoiler. So let's just say if you haven't seen it, you should! In the meantime, here are a few tips from Toni G herself when promoting her MAC “Maleficent” makeup line...
Tumblr media
Break it down before you begin. “I would start out with a base, and then I would add my highlights and then I would add the contour.”
Identify and highlight the under-the-eye triangle. “If you took a pencil from your nose to your upper cheekbone, you would just take that ‘V’ from the corner of your eye to the nose and highlight that whole area under your eye. That would help enhance your cheekbones – and with a light contour. I like to work more with highlights than doing too much contour.”
Fill in the hollows. “For the contour, you feel where your cheekbone is, and you kind of go right under that – and don’t take it too far to your mouth. I would keep it, you know, just halfway from your ear to the midpart of your cheekbone. Just don’t take it too far down; then it becomes obvious.”
Blend the contouring color up and away. “If you’re using a cream, you blend it out with your sponge until there’s no hard lines — and then same with the powder, except you would use a brush. From where you put it, blend it up.”
Don’t forget the eyes. “The thing with cheekbones is – I would say the more defined your eyes are, that the focus will be taken away.”

Lipstick – How much are we actually ingesting?
Tumblr media
The rumors of Lipstick consumption is one of those concerns you hear about and never fully forget. The belief that women swallow an excessive amount of lipstick in a lifetime has been around for over 20 years. As avid lovers of colorful lips we wanted to do our own research on this, and I sure am glad we did!
Based on reports in The Ottawa Citizen, Glamour magazine, The Express, Rocky Mountain News, The Sun, Irish news Sunday Herald Sun, The Guardian, and many more the average amount of lipstick consumed is rumored to be anywhere between 3-10 pounds.
Tumblr media
This begs the question: how much lipsticks would it take to get the equivalent of 10 pounds? We used a few of our favorite lipsticks as examples and gathered that each tube had 3 grams of actual usable lipstick. 1lb has 453.592 grams, so 151 full tubes of lipstick would have to be ingested to equal 1lb. It would take 1,511 tubes to equal 10lbs.  And this would still only be possible if 0% of it ended up on your glass, tissue, or man.
So how much are we actually consuming? This depends on the person and the lipstick. The amount would vary based on how often they apply. Hypothetically if you used half a tube a month, (3 grams = approximately 454 applications per tube, 7.5 times every day for 2 months) and 50% of this was consumed, it would be 9 grams a year. So if you did this every day for 50 years you would have consumed 1 pound.
And there you have it! We enjoyed testing this theory out. If you are feeling curious about the number of grams you are consuming try keeping track of your applications for a week! We would love to hear your feedback! Until then, long live luscious smackers!

Who is: Alex Box
Tumblr media
Throughout the years we have repeatedly seen Alex Box revolutionize the generic ideals of what beauty should be. The British artist was raised in a small town by her unicycle-riding dad and her “meekly radical” mother. She later moved to London and studied Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art.
In school, Box insisted her main focus remain on the relationship between bodies and the environment of art. As she went on to study make up, she continued exploring art, science, and nature. Never letting others dictate the rules of art to her. Box is a self-proclaimed “artist who works with make-up”, and continuously changes the way of the make-up industry.
Box is well known for her multimedia art, using make-up, digital fabrication, and simple electronics to create untraditional masterpieces. Her surreal and uncharted outlook has been inspirational to many. Box is the creative director of Illamasqua, and has been exhibited in galleries across the world. She has had editorial work featured in a multitude of publications, and created looks for many of the top designers and artists.
Tumblr media
"The idea that you can create your own alter ego, and it doesn’t even have to be human anymore. It can be a square with ears if you want. Technology has taken a visual language and thrown it on its head, and we’re only just coming around to it.” –Alex Box
Tumblr media
“A good photographer is always actively seeking to progress themselves and develop their process – questioning is their most important quality.” – Alex Box
Tumblr media
“I was the only goth in the village,” she says of her upbringing in a small village on the outskirts of Grimsby

“There is a lot of ambiguity in fashion. You’ve all been brought together to make something beautiful, and when you’ve got the right group of people working together, then usually not a lot is said.” – Alex Box

The history of make up: Cleopatra
Tumblr media
When the “History of Makeup” comes up many people think back to the original Queen of beauty: Cleopatra. Looking back we can agree that Cleopatra had it down to an art. The queen of Nile’s makeup was her trademark. Her legacy survives in modern day, she owned who she was, and makeup was her weapon of mass seduction.
At the time, cosmetics were only attainable to persons of great social standing. The eyes were said to be a window of the spirit, and if a person had intriguing eyes they were seen as having great personal strength and power. Egyptians used black kohl and green malachite to line and highlight the eyes, as well as a number of other cosmetic preparations and medications. Queen Cleopatra was noted for having a large gathering of cosmetic recipes on hand. She was obsessed with maintaining her youth, and employed alchemists and beauticians to enhance her beauty.  History clearly notes her reign, and beauty as legendary.
Although we will never have a photo of Cleopatra, she has been a muse to influential artists, rulers, and stars. Cleopatra has inspired many works of art, the most memorable being the 20th Century Fox featured film “Cleopatra”, staring Elizabeth Taylor. The featured film was one of the most expensive movies ever made. The starting budget was around the $2 million mark, by the time the movie finished filming the cost was an estimated $44 million.
Tumblr media
The film required over 26,000 costumes and 79 sets. The construction was reportedly the cause of a major shortage in building materials in Italy.
Tumblr media
Elizabeth had 65 costumes in the movie, which earned her a Guinness World Record tile for “Most Costume Changes in a Film.” The budget for her costumes was $194,800 (equivalent to $1,500,000 in 2014.)

A Beautiful Indian Wedding! By Natalia Issa
Tumblr media
Lailas Wedding: First Impression
I will begin by saying that this was my first Indian Wedding and it was the most beautiful experience, as an artist and as a person. When I meet Laila I was drawn to her sweet personality, her strength, her humble but strong spirit and beauty. I knew she would be a very special bride for me from the second I greeted her at my studio.
Trial Run
The trial run lasted well over 5 hours as we had to go through different looks for each day of her wedding festivities and ceremonies. Between the trial run and wedding week, Laila and I formed a very special connection, and she submerged me into her culture and her lovely traditions. The bride’s choice in jewelry was one of my main sources of inspirations, as the Hair and Makeup Artist this was the first time I was placing a Maang Tikka on a bride. This is traditional Indian/Pakistani jewelry piece designed to hook in the hair and rest in the forehead. It is gorgeous, I wish I can wear one everyday but as my bride informed me this is only for wedding celebrations.
The Challenge
As a makeup artist my goal is always to find the balance between correcting and enhancing my client’s beauty without over covering her skin with loads of unnecessary products. For my sweet bride Laila, this was the case, her skin has a yellow/olive undertone, and as with any skin tone, needing mainly correction around the eye area, nose and mouth. Prior to the wedding week I went to get Laila ready for her engagement portraits. At this time with the help of my friends and pro artist from Mac Pro and Make Up For Ever (Dallas), I found all the products needed to give Laila a flawless makeup application that would brighten her skin and give her a glow from within for her professional photo session.
Product Break Down for Laila’s Flawless Face
This is the list of products that helped me prep, lighten and brighten my bride’s complexion and in the order I applied them.
I applied a small amount Mac Cosmetics Studio Moisture Cream to the outer edges of the face.
Then, I applied Make Up For Ever High Definition Primer #4 with a foundation brush. This is an HD Primer that has a microperfecting golden/orange tint to brighten the skin. This is truly a breakthrough product because it nourishes, moisturizes and softens the skin, creating a glowing effect, also it helps the makeup stay put longer for up to 18 hours.
I proceeded to correct the under eye area and any places where I needed to color correction, around the mouth and nose area, using Mac Cosmetics Pure Orange Studio Finish Skin Corrector. Although this bold orange skin corrector might be a bit scary for many, going back to the color theory, we know that the color orange cancels out any bluish/purple colors on the skin and balances it. This product is really amazing it gives the face fresh look as if the client had just had a brightening facial and it covers dark circles extremely well.
I applied her matching foundation Studio Sculpt Foundation NW43 by Mac Cosmetics with kabuki brush in circular motions.
** We also did airbrush makeup on 2 occasions in place of traditional foundation. In other words, I did steps 1-3 and on the 4th step I ran Face and Body C7 by Mac Cosmetics  with a few drops of Make Up For Ever Airbrush Thinner 246 through the airbrush machine.
Every day I spent with Laila getting her ready for her wedding ceremonies Laila would say: “Natalia this is exactly what I had envisioned for myself, thank you.” For me, that was the moment when I did my happy dancing, nothing better than to see your client happy and feel gorgeous.
