marvey is currently my most bookmarked ship, so trust me when i say i've been around the bend for marvey content. i have dug through a lot of it the past few months, so trust that these fics have been highly rated!

MY PERSONAL FAVOURITES

A Specter-Ross Affair by @frivoloussuits (15k+, au)

“You ordered an ‘extra-hot, extra-wet cappuccino, single-origin, properly layered, to-go and ready five minutes ago to make up for your service speed or lack thereof.’” In which Mike is a barista, Rachel is a lawyer, and Harvey is paid excessive amounts of money to plan their joyous Christmas wedding.

"Love is just a particularly socially accepted form of fraud. It's a series of increasingly complex and fragile deceptions between two or more people, and, more alarmingly, between each participant and their own deluded subconscious."

i literally cannot recommend this fic enough. this might be my favourite read of the entire year, dead serious. this sounds fluffy but trust me, the pining and the angst go well like salt on a chocolate chip cookie: extremely decadent. everything about this fic goes insane and this should be your gateway drug into marvey, im so serious about this. READ IT. (weddingplanner!harvey)

of all the gin joints by @frivoloussuits (10k+, au)

Hanging around a neighborhood bar one night, Harvey befriends a guy named Mike after realizing they can both quote The Princess Bride on demand. In the law offices of Rand, Kaldor, Zane and Pearson, senior partner Harvey Specter takes on an unusual case, representing his managing partner's daughter as she divorces a Michael James Ross. Harvey sees no connection until it's far too late.

"They’re playing a virtuosic duet with inhuman ease, as if the intoxication has broken their boundaries and blurred them into a single entity."

this. obsessed with fics that really use the law in their plots, and this is a prime example. a lot of chemistry in this one that is described in a way that makes you jealous of the bond they share and there are still lines in this fic that i think about almost everyday but honestly, such a top-tier read. PLEASE PLEASE IF YOU LIKE SUFFERING ANF REALLY REALLY GOOD CHEMISTRY PLEASE

5U175 by Closer (26k, canon-adjacent)

Harvey sometimes moonlights as a Star Trek BNF. Mike might have an attitude problem on the internet. TiberiusGhost is strangely compelling, for a recluse who never goes to meetups, and Harvey's finding this kid Photohead vaguely familiar…

i know that the terminology in this one is hella old-school but trust me. as someone who doesnt read a lot of fandom fics, this fic has changed it all for me (also bc the author replied to my comment hehehe) stick with this fic because the way fandom weaves with the character development is absolutely delicious, i remember saying this in my og comment but this fic was written with love for fandom and you should definitely read it too!!! you'd absolutely love it! (also ben stans rise up ^^)

When Grammy needs an upgrade in care, Mike knows that the usual one-off gig as a paid submissive won't be enough. He takes a job he's been refusing for a while - a long-term, full-time contract. He expects his client to be a sadistic asshole. He expects not to like it. He's wrong on both counts.

this is a fandom classic, every fic rec has this on the list (cw for dom/sub and prostitution, so if you're uncomfy please dont read) but i swear there are so many romantic moments in this one that make me swoon and the smut is very good, i usually tap out in long fics really quickly but this hooked me the whole way through twice. thats my ringing endorsement, READ THIS

Lobster and Other Catastrophes by @andthetardis (21k, canon-compliant)

After months of silence, Mike starts texting Harvey again out of the blue. Funny thing to do on his honeymoon, really.

BRO PLEASE. this was so good. angsty and pining-y enough even though it's mostly a text fic. text fics to me are more like comedic, but this one had substance and heart (and funny and enjoyable btw). pulls you in and really makes you want to stick it out and get to the beautiful ending <333 (harvey being soft is probably a category on its own :3)

The Game by @frivoloussuits (27k, hunger games au)

Harvey Specter and Donna Paulsen are efficient and elegant killers. They have trained since childhood, mentored personally by Jessica Pearson and marked for years as District 1's Tributes for the Hunger Games. Mike Ross is an orphan from District 12, a drug dealer, and an underage gambler. After years of scrutinizing the Hunger Games on TV to make savvy bets, he finds himself on the wrong side of the camera, now playing the odds just to survive. Harvey and Mike cannot, should not trust each other. Still, they strike a backroom deal.

I READ THIS WHEN I WAS REVISITING HUNGER GAMES AND OHHHHH THIS HAS THE ANGST. absolutely riveting. ths is the third fic im reccing from them bc i love frivoloussuits. i would die for them HHFSHFHKSDGDHFG i love the angst and the life-threatening situations that the hunger games provide and harvey as a career is correct. its just correct. everything here grips my soul

Disaster Stories by agatestones (22k, canon-compliant)

"Hold on," Mike asked, "you made Donna come into work in the middle of a blizzard?" "I don't make Donna do anything. Haven't you learned by now?" Harvey gave Mike a mean little smile, but under that was relief for anyone to see. "You, I can make come into the office in a blizzard."

reads like a novella to me, and it's really good!!! very episodic and you really feel like these are things that have happened in universe. its very slice of lifey and i reread it a lot as a comfort read, its like a big hug to me

Pizza and a Movie by Closer (30k+, au)

In an alternate universe, Harvey's still a lawyer but Mike's not a pot runner -- he's a deliveryman for Rollo's Pizza and Ribs, which happens to be Harvey's favorite pizza place. Once Harvey finds out his pizza guy is a genius, Mike's life takes a few turns he would not have expected...

i swear this is the most rom-commy fic marvey has to offer. i like aus that slap me in the face more with the alternate universe, but this is such a rom-com plot. fandom classic as well and it really reads like a hugh grant 90s movie and if thats not enough to pull you in idk what will tbh

Imprimatur by Closer (22k, au)

Mike was raised to believe Imprint was a life-changing event for those few lucky enough to experience it. Harvey was raised to believe it was a form of mental illness. When it actually happened, neither of them noticed.

this goes absolutely crazy. one of those fics where you read it and you almost want to throw your phone at the wall because the characters could make it so easy if they werent so stupid (but in a good way of course) but the way it was written, you feel the depth of the soulmate bond and why its so important (which a lot of soulmate aus forget to do loll) but goes down like an expensive and delicious dinner :)

She offers only one deal– two years, no other charges against anyone else in the firm, as long as Harvey Specter turns himself in. And even as Donna and Jessica and Louis and Mike beg him not to, he jumps on the grenade. “Time to get busy living or get busy dying,” he remarks, and Mike gives a small chuckle. Then Harvey smirks, straightens his suit jacket, and strides into FCI Danbury.

I LOVE APOCALYPSE FICS UP UP UP badass!harvey makes me bark, but im a really big fan of people who find happiness in the worst circumstances and this fic does it so so so well. reminds me a lot of tlou episode like 2? the one with the strawberries. please this is what i revisit when i miss marvey and i dont have a lot of time because the world and the characters are jsut so delicious!!!

Despite Harvey's warnings, Mike tells Rachel the truth about everything. She's shocked, naturally, and more than a little angry, but she agrees to keep his secret, and even to date him. So when they break up, Harvey goes into damage-control mode.

RACHEL!! HELLO RACHEL!! im always up for smart and discerning rachel (this shows up in of all the gin joints too btw!!!) this runs realistic to me because it shows that rachelxmike arent some hopelessly wrong for each other couple, they have good and bad times. this feels more real to me than other fics bc its not like the world conspires for marvey to be apart, its just life. i know this makes it sound so sad, and it is, but trust me: this is really really really good i love this so much

HSDGFHSDKGHRLKGHK THIS FIC. i love fics that use more than just prose to tell their stories (see above fic) and this does my favourite thing that soulmate aus do, which is where they integrate in-universe explanations for the phenomenon. the amount of work and dedication put into this fic makes it absolutely sing and was absolutely lovely!!

Poetry holds meaning, for anyone who reads it. It obscures and dances around the literal and metaphorical, because it’s imbued with so much of something that it overflows out of any definition. It can make someone mad, or lovesick, or aroused, and the reactions would be absolutely warranted. Mike is poetry, to Harvey. - Harvey Specter could be a good politician, as he believes in pragmatism over poetry. He won't let his progress fall apart, won't let someone knock it down. And then someone unceremoniously cracks open a suitcase at his feet. Or: Harvey, pretty boys and poetry.

I haven't read any STEVE/BUCKY FIC in the last five years or so (Endgame really burned me hard), BUT I can at least offer what I read up to that point! Most of my recs are from around when Captain America: The Winter Soldier first came out (some from before, so there's a few speculation fics) and then I was ready semi-regularly up through Inifinity War, so these may be a bit dated but also the fandom had some ABSOLUTE BANGER fics from that era! Roy working through his feelings, figuring his shit out in the moment - with lots of help from Keeley. Keeley directs R & J, and then she kicks them out to shower, and they still get kebabs and talk about their feelings.

family, right - jedusaur - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] @jedusaur 3k. Jamie and Keeley go to a Pride parade with Phoebe and the team. Roy stays home and bakes them a rainbow cake, because he wants to be private about that kind of thing. It’s all very sweet! (No pun intended.)

Triple blend - Dancey96 - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] 7k. Holy SHIT, this is fantastic. An OT3 fic set right after Keeley kicks them out in S3. Roy and Jamie go to the kebab shop and talk about what she meant by “mixing their coffees.” The feelings and the way they take care of Jamie and just everything about it is so perfect. This could be canon.

Jamie licks the corner of his mouth, tongue poking out as he smirks at Roy. “You’d have sex with me, then?”

“Oh, for fuck’s sake,” Roy groans.

“That I was queer?”

Roy snaps his head up to look at Jamie. “You can’t say that.”

“Yes, I can,” Jamie says. “We’ve reclaimed it or whatever. That’s the word I use.”

“You’re gonna make me come too soon, is what your gonna do,” Jamie manages to get out, teeth clenched under the strain of staying still.

An OT3 established relationship fic where Roy and Jamie get in a fight after Jamie is asked to come back on Love Conquers All (he says no, obviously). I love a good fight and make up fic! The last chapter with the convo between Roy and Jamie is so great.

the body of someone you love - goodmorninglovelies - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] @goodmorninglovelies42 2k. OT3 h/c where Jamie gets rear-ended by Colin when leaving practice. He gets stitches and Roy is all pissy because he only knows how to express his worry as anger. Then he and Jamie fight a bit. Keeley draws Jamie a bath at home and Roy apologizes. It’s lovely!

so afraid that time will take it all from me - LikeAMovieIOnceSaw - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] 10k. A really good fic about Roy being gay. Starts from when he was little through all the Ted Lasso seasons, basically. Kind of an AU/rewrite. The scene where he and Jamie finally kiss at his house is really, really sweet. Roy starts crying because he’s so overwhelmed and didn’t think he could allow himself to have this. Also some cute stuff with Phoebe like Uncle’s Day and Roy and her going to the England match. I’m always impressed by Roy fics because the man will forever remain a mystery to me.

let your hook be always cast - Literatus - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] @literatus-ao3 25k. The fic starts when Jamie joins the team. There is SO much good pining, from both of them, although Roy doesn’t get it yet. And there’s a good amount of angst because obviously Jamie’s loved him forever and Roy treats him like shit when he first gets to the team. Then Roy starts to have sex dreams about Jamie, and they’re hot. Jamie is also super cute with Phoebe. He’s her favorite player and there’s a cute scene where Roy introduces them, and Jamie suggests they play a little football.

“Her mum is bringing her around in thirty minutes, and you’re going to be nice and fucking charming and you’re not going to upset her. If you do, I’ll rearrange that pretty fucking face of yours.”

Jamie blinks at him slowly. “You think I’m pretty.”

absolutely definitely nota - Chapter 1 - talkfast - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] 12k. Roy watches Lust Conquers All with the yoga mums. Sort of a speed run/AU of S2 and S3 where Roy hugs Jamie after his fight with his dad, and starts training him much sooner (I think). [Stefon voice] This fic has everything - Magic pancakes, tunnel hugs, Jamie finding out Roy watched Lust Conquers All and being self-conscious about his nails being painted on the show, Jamie painting Roy’s nails, the yoga mums meeting Jamie then making Roy a cake about it, and a tandem bike gag gift!

The moment feels too gentle. Like Roy should set the volume to maximum and startle Jamie awake.

He doesn’t do that.

Instead he just fucking sits there until Jamie shifts and stretches out his limbs with a hum. Jamie blinks blearily at the ceiling and turns towards Roy without lifting his head from the couch cushion. When he sees that Roy is still there, his mouth curves into a sweet smile.

Roy’s heart stops for a second.

I could be violet sky - liesmyth - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] @liesmyth 9k. Sadist Roy and accommodating Jamie written by one of the best authors out there! Jamie finds out Roy gets off on hurting him. Everything is consensual. In the end they talk more, and Roy admits he likes it even more because Jamie isn’t into pain. But Jamie likes it when he slaps him because it “means he’s his.” ROMANTIC BDSM MY BELOVED.

That’s kind of a trend—after Roy’s rough with him, he likes to hover, oddly solicitous, and Jamie’s not above taking shameless advantage. If Roy really wants to attend to his every need, then good for him—Jamie’s got plenty of those. He sends Roy running round the house to get him freshly squeezed orange juice or Jamie’s favorite pillow that he left in the bedroom, and Roy tells him to fuck off but he still does it, and always tilts down his chin to accept a kiss.

“I can be great all the time. Watch me.”

“I’m always watching you.” Roy’s voice is raw, frightfully open. “Leave me no other choice, do you?”

Roy Kent's Dramatic but Inevitable Jamie Tartt Induced Bisexual Awakening - chelicerata - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] 8k. This is part 1 of a lovely set of fics. Roy kisses Jamie when they’re on the couch after he makes dinner for them, they fool around, and then Roy freaks out a bit and Jamie leaves. There is a little bit of angst here! Eventually Roy apologizes (after talking with Keeley about bi stuff), and then R & J have dinner and fool around but this time with feelings! Poster talk. Light D/s. All things that are good.

The thing about him and Jamie - the worst part, the absolute worst part, the part he thinks about when staring up at his ceiling at four in the fucking morning is that Roy doesn’t just want to fuck Jamie, and doesn’t just want to be his friend again. He wants to kiss his stupid pouting face and tell him what a good job he’s doing and fucking cuddle with him at night and sink his teeth in and never, ever, ever let him go.

“I’m not doing anything to fuck up my star player,” Roy says, aware that he’s being completely fucking mental about it.

“Your star player, am I?” Jamie looks immensely pleased and at least a little turned on.

Roy Kent's Long and Incredibly Fucking Irritating Coming Out Saga - chelicerata - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] Part 2 of the above fic. 10k. Established relationship from Roy’s perspective. The process of coming out to various people – Phoebe, Georgie and Simon, etc. This fic is so gorgeous, and you already know I’m impressed by Roy meta!

“You’re… out?” The words feel awkwardly shaped in Roy’s mouth, like he’s mimicking lines that he’s only seen in films, lines that shouldn’t belong to him.

better than dreaming - Literatus - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] 16k. Get-together fic. Jamie buys Roy a Garmin watch and it tells him every time Jamie jerks off (via his wrist). Lots of talk about how Jamie used to be obsessed with him (which I love!). And Roy telling Jamie he can keep a house key. And Roy wanting more than sex. And just!!! So many lines in this made me want to scream with happiness.

“Easy,” Jamie soothes, like he’s coaxing a skittish animal. “Bet you’ve not been wanking. Probably afraid you were going to think about me, right?”

Roy’s skin heats. “Shut up.”

“I think about you,” Jamie says, conversationally. “Have done for fucking years. That poster on my wall I told you about—we had a beautiful relationship.” His eyes are dark and lovely. “I had this fantasy ‘bout you.”

Roy could fall asleep like this, standing up and with Jamie in his arms. “I don’t yell at you.”

“Yeah, you do.” Jamie presses in closer, dipping his head so that his entire face is pressed into the curve of Roy’s neck. “Like it though. Makes me better. Feels like you care.”

There’s so much to unpack in that, too much for when there’s Phoebe in the other room. So he spreads his palm across Jamie’s back instead, letting it settle right between his shoulder blades while fighting the urge to dip the other beneath his jacket to touch skin.

where it goes from here - Literatus - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] A 12k fic where Jamie gets hit in the butt with a ball, and that leads to them getting together. FULL of fanboy Jamie (he gets fucked in the trophy room). The dialog is really good, and the ending is so sweet. Roy tells Jamie he wants a proper relationship. This particular bit has been stuck in my head ever since:

“I’m…a lot. I don’t mean to be, but I’m…Keeley said I’m suffocating.”

“I’m not Keeley,” he says, relaxing, happiness spreading through him and making his toes tingle. “Fucking suffocate me, coach. More suffocation.”

run it up - immordelle - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] 16k. Roy accidentally becomes Jamie’s sugar daddy. Or rather, he shows his love through gifts. This is one of those fics that I read basically having to stop and whisper-scream into my hands, it’s so good.

The cologne, the necklace, the way everyone at Richmond and every journalist at their press conferences know, without needing it to be said aloud, that Jamie is Roy’s pet project. He’s been Roy’s this whole time.

“Are we going shopping?” he asks. […]

“I’m taking you shopping,” he corrects, and Jamie’s eyes widen.

A Sure Thing - smashthatlikebutton - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] 14k. Jamie meets the yoga mums. Fake dating, kind of. I usually don’t like fake dating that much, but I read this and OH BOY I’m so glad I did! Roy brings Jamie to yoga night, and when the ladies assume they’re together, neither Roy nor Jamie corrects them. When Roy calls Jamie “love,” … I will NEVER RECOVER. This has the feel of a romance novel in the best way, I don’t know how else to describe it.

“Uh, no thanks,” Jamie says, looking at Roy for permission first. As though Roy would let him drink on this diet, let alone in the run-up to the Everton match. Christine raises her eyebrows at the two of them, like ”I didn’t know the two of you were like that.” Roy is incredibly surprised when Jamie flushes all over, “It’s not— he’s my— it’s part of my training.”

Jamie stares at him. “You’re nothing like him, you know that, right? You’re not an arsehole. Well, you are, but not in that way. You’re nice, even. In your own way.”

Roy isn’t choked up. He is not going to cry. He stares straight ahead of him and blinks rapidly.

suffering, the optional pain - Literatus - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] 10k. Fuuucking Christ, I loved this one. This one might not be for everyone because it isn’t that fluffy, but ohhh boy, if it’s your thing it’ll hit just right. I love a fight within an established relationship, and this one doesn’t shy away from Roy being a bastard and really snapping at everyone. Roy fucks up his knee when playing with Phoebe and gets real pissed about it. Treats everyone like shit for days. Yells at a player, snaps at Phoebe when she runs into him and it hurts his knee again. Jamie has to set him straight. Bottom!Roy, D/s, very mild dub-con.

“I deserve a fucking medal for putting up with you. Fucking hard work, you are. Making everyone walk on eggshells around you. It’s rude, is what it is. What the fuck am I going to do with you, huh?”

Something to be said - macaronicism - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] 6k. A really great fic from 2021 that deals with post-Man City stuff. Jamie’s nervous to go back to practice and face the guys, but he does and it’s all fine. He talks to Sam and Ted and finally Roy. It’s all very sweet and protective and really well done. This needed to happen in canon!

Lemons and Lavender - LivingProof - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] 8k. A Jamie h/c fic from 2021. He ends up in the hospital and at first his dad shows up and is a piece of shit, then Roy and Ted show up and save the day. It’s SO precious. It’s technically gen, but it could be read as pre-slash. The writing is fantastic. Fuzzy Jamie written in a believable way.

Letting go, holding on - Chapter 1 - macaronicism - Ted Lasso (TV) [Archive of Our Own] 8k. Another amazing h/c story that is technically platonic. Set after the finale. Roy apologizes to Jamie about the beer date thing being about Keeley. Then finds out Jamie is planning on talking to his dad, and tells him he’s against it. Lots of emotional h/c! Jamie stays the night at Roy’s in the spare room and gets some good sleep, and Roy gets Ted to come over the next day and talk to Jamie more about his dad, etc. <3

Here are some fics that I love! They’re all Johnlock, and all completed (I am too impatient for WiPs). I’ve mostly grouped fics from the same author together under “Other recs from the same author” except in cases where it’s physically painful for me to pick a single favorite fic. I tagged every author whose tumblr I could find but please let me know if I’ve missed anyone and I can add them.

Case Fic

The Same River Twice by @plaidadder: This series of fics has everything - intriguing central cases inspired by ACD canon, spot on characterization, understated angst, hilarious dialogue and, to top it all off, the best Harry Watson I have ever come across. 151,255 words spread across two stories, “Empty Houses” and its sequel “Young Men Carbuncular”. Other recs for this author: Law Like Love, a post-HLV fix-it-fic told in reverse chronological order; Prior Engagements, plot-heavy parentlock sequel to Law Like Love.

Safe Distance by @merripestin: So much post-TRF fic is an attempt to grapple with the impossible emotions John must be feeling after Sherlock’s return from the dead. Merripestin’s John is dealing with a change in sexual identity as well. He’s angry, loving, broken, healing, confused, determined, numb, raw and, eventually, at peace. Beautifully done. 114,956 words. Other recs for this author: London Orbital, in which John, Sherlock, Lestrade, and Sally Donovan spend all night driving round the M25 looking for a killer.

The Norwood Love Builders by flawedamythyst: I’m not usually a fan of the “going undercover as lovers” trope but the author quickly won me over with clever dialogue and a solid central mystery. It’s a unique blend of undercover romantic comedy-style shenanigans and the subtle, painful work of dealing with John’s emotional turmoil post-Fall. 47,798 words.

The Edinburgh Problem by @snorklepie: This fic has Sherlock, John, and a whole suite of well-drawn original characters, including Violet Vernet, one of the best original characters I’ve come across in Sherlock fandom. Not to mention sparkling dialogue and a cracking good murder. There’s a sequel currently in progress, but the fic stands alone if you’re like me and too impatient for WiPs. 152,095 words.

Infiltrate by @ladyflowdi and MirrorSkippy: This fic drops you in media res and never quite lets you catch your breath. The creeping menace of Moriarty, the complicated family relationships and of course, a Sherlock and John who are struggling to figure out both each other and themselves. Gorgeous. 117,422 words across three stories.

Midnight Blue Serenity by @the-pen-pot: John and Sherlock go undercover at a club. This is a masterful work of tension - between the club setting, the slow burn romance, the totally in character but agonizing miscommunication, and an excellent murder mystery, this fic will have your heart pounding from start to finish. 151,907 words. Other recs for this author: To Light Another’s Path, which is a delightful combination of case fic and hurt/comfort fic both; Electric Pink Hand Grenade, in which Sherlock gets migraines.

Thirst by @holmesianpose: Set after the Great Game, John struggles to accept his attraction to Sherlock. This story features multiple cases, both gruesome and thrilling, as well as a particularly unsettling Moriarty (the author captures his disturbing sense of humor perfectly) and a slow-burn romance that turns scorching halfway through. Unmissable. 122,257 words.

On the Ice by @berlynn-wohl: John and Sherlock have a case in Antarctica! Happy nerdy fun with a solid mystery, excellent characterization, and the scenes of Sherlock Holmes playing D&D you never knew you wanted. 35,437 words. Other recs for this author: Mycobacterium Marinum, which has mysteries and sex scenes and just dozens of lines that will make you giggle; ROT-13, which is not a fic about basic encryption, but rather an adorable Sherlock-is-an-alien-and-John-has-crashlanded-on-his-planet AU.

If You Can’t Move Heaven, Raise Hell by @splix71: So this is Name of the Rose-inspired case fic, which is delightful, because The Name of the Rose is Sherlock Holmes-inspired case fic of a sort. I would recommend it for that fact alone, but the plot, setting, and characterization are also well done, and Splix has an intriguing take on a gender-swapped “Ian” Adler. 83,084 words.

Given In Evidence by @verity-burns: This fic has one of my very favorite John characterizations. Post-Fall, John has developed a tendency to patch up homeless kids and to recklessly intervene in fights. Sherlock returns just in time to keep the latter from getting John killed, and to investigate a mystery with the former. Other recs for this author: First Night Out, in which John and Sherlock dance at the Yard’s Christmas party.

Our Enthusiasms Which Cannot Always Be Explained by @withoutawish: This is case fic, but also and perhaps more importantly, it’s a Christmas wish list fic. The author’s John voice is unique - poetic and long-suffering - and the denouement is one of my very favorites. 32,961 words.

Parallel by @brbsoulnomming: Sherlock and John try to solve a series of murders on a local university campus, with help/interference from two girls who just happen to share a lot of similarities. It’s essentially unilock/femlock AU as case fic and it’s completely adorable. 77,397 words.

26 Pieces by Lanning: Mycroft gives Sherlock a puzzle box to solve, and it makes for one hell of a story. This is a breathtakingly good piece of fiction. Plot, pacing, characterization, dialogue, all incredible. Every line serves its purpose and so many of them will stick with you long after you finish. 28,236 words.

AUs

A River Without Banks by Chryse: This story uses a simple scifi premise to spool out some of the best character work that fandom has to offer. Brilliant plotting, magnificent writing and a Sherlock that will make your heart ache. If you have somehow missed this fandom classic, which is devastating and comforting by turns, but always beautiful, please go read it now. 203,286 words.

The Frost is All Over by Chryse: More AU brilliance from Chryse. They describe it as “John and Sherlock in a Dickensian orphanage (with sex!)“ which is really only a third of the story but regardless, it’s one of those AUs that manages to capture everything of importance about John and Sherlock while also taking you on a strange and wild ride. 148,518 words. Other recs for this author: Everything. Seriously, though, zie’s got 13 fics on AO3 and you won’t regret any of them.

The Bang and the Clatter by @earlgreytea68: I have no idea how enjoyable this fic is for someone who hasn’t loved baseball since they were a small child, but for me it was magical. Bless you, earlgreytea. It’s Bull Durham meets, well, Sherlock Holmes. 137,048 words. Other recs for this author: Keep the Car Running a brilliant and nail-biting Inception cross-over; Saving Sherlock Holmes, a teenagelock AU with one of the best Mycroft characterizations I’ve ever read. The Next Great Adventure by @frightfullytreeish: I am just astonished by how seamlessly this author slides Sherlock and John into the wizarding world. John as a weary veteran of the second wizarding war is perfect, and Sherlock is utterly believable as a squib who returns the condescension of magical folk tenfold. Simply excellent. 38,982 words.

The World on His Wrist and Elsewhere Come Morning by @bendingsignpost: In which John Watson changes realities every time he goes to sleep. The author does a spectacular job of grounding a fantastical premise with humor, tense plotting, and perfect characterization. 66,905 words total. Other recs for this author: Bel Canto, an atmospheric and plotty Phantom of the Opera fusion; Cooperative Principle, a character-driven realistic-AU re-imagining of Sherlock’s meeting with John “Trust Issues” Watson; Stranger at the Gate, a vampire fantasy AU and I don’t even like vampire fic but damn it I love this one; and No Fixed Point which is an AU of several of the authors’ AUs and you have to read the other stuff first but it’s worth it. Oh, is it worth it. Basically do yourself a favor and go read everything @bendingsignpost has ever written.

Names for the Galaxy by @firesdone: John teaches Sherlock how to be human - literally. This story is brilliant on so many levels: as creative, fascinating sci-fi, as intriguing case fic, as a character study, as an exploration of identity, as a thriller. I wish I’d never read it, just so I could have the delight of reading it again for the first time. 191,101 words.

A Vintage Exceptionally To Your Liking by @emmyangua: Another multiple universes fic, but with an entirely different and equally brilliant premise. (How are the writers in this fandom so damn creative? It’s obscene.) This fic tears your heart out multiple times but it’s just so interesting – and well-written, and well-characterized – that you want to keep going. 95,334 words. Other recs for this author: see also under “Everything Else”.

Mary by @kinklock: A fusion with Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca, which I’ve actually never read. A well-written psychological thriller which twists all of the characters in very interesting ways. 136,145 words. Other recs for this author: The Red Dianthus, aka gloriously fluffy case fic; Just Transport, a cute little AU with one line that I still crack up thinking about; Living Sculptures, a TAB continuation.

The Queen’s Guard by @lavvyan: A combination of two of my favorite Sherlock Holmes interpretations - BBC Sherlock, of course, and Neil Gaiman’s Study in Emerald. Everything about this fic is perfect, from the prose to plotting to the characterization. How is the characterization so good when Sherlock is half-human and John has a ghastly alien heart beating too steadily in his chest? Other recs for this author: Traffic Lights for the Colour Blind, in which John has a death wish, and its sequel The Sky for the Reaching; Some of Your Time, a short but beautiful piece of magical realism; From the Voicemail of the British Government, a humorous ficlet with the delightful premise of “the agents Mycroft has on John and Sherlock reporting in.”

Lucidity by @almostvirginia: Sherlock’s jump off the roof in TRF goes wrong, and he ends up in a coma. John must enter his subconscious to get him out. This is a premise that just begs for melodrama but the author delivers a pragmatic John and a fascinating but limited view into Sherlock’s psyche. Quietly riveting. 65,460 words.

The Best Picture of the Human Soul and Sustained by the Strength of the Colours to Come by SwissMiss: “The stories of our lives are written on our skin.” An AU in two short, sweet, sad, elegant installments. 9,914 words.

Embers series by @what-alchemy: Sherlock is made of maple, willow and spruce. Strange and exquisite. 31,228 words across five stories. Other recs for this author: Hitting the Water at Sixty Miles an Hour, in which John goes on a road trip with the Holmses for Mummy’s birthday; The Syntax of Things, “When John looked at him, Sherlock felt whole.”

Everything Else

The Paradox Series by wordstrings: This fic is just gorgeous, some of the best writing, line by line, in any kind of fiction I’ve read. The author’s characterization of Sherlock is devastating and unique and impossible to look away from. 98,863 words across 8 works.

This Cycle of Revenge is Not Going the Way I Planned It by @azriona: I feel like half the fun of crack fics is just jumping in and going along for the ride? So I won’t say much, except that I giggled like a madman at this one. 5,007 words. Other recs for this author: 3:07 am, a Mary PoV follow-up to earlygreytea’s Operation Baby Girl Watson.

Renegades by @augustbird: What if Sherlock took John with him when he went after Moriarty? It’s a rather dark story in places, and yet oddly light when you consider the alternative we got in canon. My favorite part is the brilliant denouement. 39,405 words. Other recs for this author: walk through ghosts, pre-S3, Sherlock watches John and Mary get together and it’s all so beautifully unhappy.

Grownups by @emmyangua: Did you know you wanted an Archie PoV coming of age story? I didn’t! It’s hilarious and bittersweet and perfect. 18,571 words.

Nature and Nurture by @earlgreytea68: Okay so the premise of this one is “John and Sherlock raise Sherlock’s clone” and I thought it was going to be a very long crackfic and almost skipped it. “But Toby, it’s earlygreytea,” I told myself and I’m glad I did. This fic is nuanced and genuine and sweet as hell. Well-characterized, well-plotted, and just all around well-done parentlock. Give it a go. 203,273 words. Other recs for this author: The Adventures of a Single Girl in London (Plus a Consulting Detective), another ridiculous premise, another ridiculously good story.

Empty Houses by theumbrellaseller: A short and fascinating exploration of the different ways Sherlock and John approach dead bodies. 7,003 words.

Up or Artistic Lush by @cesperanza: I’m not sure how the author managed to fit so many interesting plot ideas and perfect lines of dialogue into such a short fic but damn. If this doesn’t make you giggle, you may be a high-functioning sociopath. 8,223 words.

I wake up and I wake up and you’re still dead by @thisprettywren: Exquisite Memento-inspired post-Fall John PoV fic. That’s all I can tell you, it’s too painful to talk about. 24,226 words and each one of them hurts.

Modus Operandi by @joolabee: Not demolished yet? Try this equally painful post-Fall John PoV fic. Completely different but also gorgeous in a way that leaves you empty inside. 22,428 words. Other recs for this author: Ease Your Way Into Occupied Spaces, which is practically fluff compared to Modus Operandi but, you know, still hell.

Home by Resonant: This author has several short fics in the same style, and what a style they are - sharply written, erotic, first-time stories with a brilliant, self-protective Sherlock and a brave and steady John. 3,397 words. Other recs for this author: Amenable is another favorite of mine.

Leave the Signs and the Sirens by out_there: After John nearly dies at the pool, Sherlock works through PTSD. A measured, lovely fic with perhaps the kindest John I’ve ever read. 24,574 words. Other recs for this author: The Whore of Babylon Was a Perfectly Nice Girl, in which John tries to navigate his new relationship with Sherlock.

Vital Organs by @firstdrafted: John and Sherlock celebrate Valentine’s Day with arguing, miscommunication, and serious injury. Beautifully written and characterized, and sweet without being sappy. 8,128 words.

Needs Must by @jenthesweetie: A S3 “missing scenes” fic that extends past canon about halfway through. A solid, thoughtful plot, with a Sherlock voice that tends towards the hilarious, but the focus is on characterization. There are a few scenes in here that just knocked me over. 10,624 words.

HOT DOLPHIN SEX by @conversationswithbenedict: This fic is neither as cracky nor as smutty as the title makes it sound, but it’s not exactly serious or PG either. It has an enjoyable plot which nevertheless takes back seat to feelings, orgasms, and some hilarious texting. Save this for an evening when you need cheering up. 47,487 words across two fics. Other recs for this author: The Very Unlikely Existence of a Flightless Bird in a Tuxedo, which may have the most adorable Sherlock to be found on ao3.

A Serious Mistake by Waldo: A short post-Hounds fic in which Sherlock deals with the consequences of drugging and terrifying John. Understated and totally compelling. I particularly love the author’s characterization of John here. 5,238 words. Other recs for this author: A Serious Mistake is actually the final installment of a series of short fics, A Series of Mistakes. They’re all very good, A Serious Mistake is just my favorite of them.

the sensation of falling as you just hit sleep by @fizzygins: This densely plotted novel-length fic alternates between John and Sherlock’s PoV, immediately after TRF. It alternates between funny and hot and devastatingly sad, but in the end it revolves around a central question: just what kind of fucked up person fake-suicides in front of their best friend, and how do you move past that? 83,290 words. Other recs for this author: Immortal Beloved which is - I don’t even know if I can describe this one, it is bewildering, unsettling, mesmerizing.

Loosed Reins by AggressiveWhenStartled: If you like inappropriate sarcasm, deeply awkward situations, and lots and lots of startlingly funny yelling, then oh boy do I have a fic for you. 35,095 words.

The Moonlight and the Frost by @consultingcaitlin: John is a wreck after the end of His Last Vow. This is a story about how John pieces himself, and his relationship with Sherlock, back together. Beautifully characterized and utterly compelling. 77,273 words. if nobody speaks of remarkable things by @watsonshoneybee: John’s daughter is stillborn. Arresting, heartbreaking prose that makes you ache and ache and ache. 34,328 words.
