i find it frustrating when a character makes a decision (especially an emotional one) that makes sense for them as a person to make in a given situation, but because the decision has unforeseen ill effects of some kind, fandoms attribute this choice to the character’s stupidity. because it’s like. no!! they aren’t stupid, they are just trapped within their story and cannot see further forward in it than where and when they are!! they are not looking at this with the omniscient god’s eye view that you, the viewer who has already read this book or seen this movie, are where you know what happens after this and the consequences of every move on the narrative chess board!! they cannot make the decisions that you think you would, knowing what you know, because they don’t have all that insight!!

Summary: In one world, the mountain wishes to break its inhabitants. To confirm their worst fears while they feel alone, and drive them mad. In this one, it simply doesn't want them to leave.

Summary: Demon Queen Alicia, but all she wants is a vacation.
Chapter 37: ...You're somehow the one with morals, despite being the demon king.

Summary: Odio makes his way to the palace of Lucretia, intent on claiming his rightful throne. Of course, he would never rule over humans, but he's willing to offer them demonhood, if they're willing to bow to him.

Summary: Oersted encounters a vampire while hunting bandits, and everyone else doesn't know how to handle it. Oersted, at least, is having a great time.

Warnings: None, but there are implications if one thinks too much about everything-
Summary: Oersted wins the tournament, and seems to become a completely different person. No one seems to care except for Straybow, and he may feel jealous towards Oersted after everything that's happened, but Oersted is still his friend, and he has no plans on just letting either of them become pawns to someone else.
Chapter 41: ...You're oblivious, but everyone around you isn't.
Ships: Streibough/Alethea
Warnings: Minor character death
Summary: Streibough realises Oersted is slightly oblivious, and fate is changed with a simple conversation. The king tries to ruin that, but a demon fixes the problem. Maybe.
Chapter 42: …Your not-yet-wife is a demon.

Warnings: None.
Summary: Alethea is taken to Devil’s Peak, but thankfully, she’s not alone, ‘Nessie’ intends to make sure her stay is short and that she leaves before anyone with less-then-stelar intentions comes for her.

Summary: Straybow thinks Oersted's life is perfect. That Oersted is naturally gifted to end up with such skill as a young age. Straybow is, unfortunately, wrong. Luckily, he realises this before it's too late.

Summary: Oersted's and Straybow's souls have done this dance many, many times, and while most souls lose memories and only leave the vaguest of feelings, Oersted and Straybow befriending, fighting, killing, or ruining each other has happened often enough that even if they have forgotten, the feelings they have carry over.

Summary: Straybow doesn’t remember much of his childhood, or his recent memories, but that’s fine. He’s living a relatively comfortable life, he’s keeping Oersted safe, there’s nothing to worry about. Nothing at all.
Chapter 48: ...You marry an assassin.

Warnings: Background character death, patricide, background disturbing implications, mentions/thoughts of self harm and depression.
Summary: Instead of going to Lucretia to become knights, Oersted and Straybow become assassins for money instead. Despite this, they still end up competing for the tournament for Alicia's hand, as per their latest contract.

How dare you leave those in the tags, @golvio.
I actually think of the Damsel as one of the more narrative-savvy Princesses, up with Tower and Prisoner—Tower's the only one to actually come out and say it, but Prisoner clearly knows enough about how things are supposed to work to pull one over on the Narrator (actually, come to think of it, she knows enough about how things work to know she needs to pull one over on the Narrator). And then there's the Damsel.
The Tower says that even though she could break her chains herself, it doesn't make for the "right kind of story." Even though she has so much power over the player by this point, she still needs the story to be fulfilled in the way it's supposed to be. She needs the player to be the one to free her.
It's a bit similar with Damsel, though you could make the argument that it doesn't occur to her that she could leave her chains until you try to free her—Smitten's line about us needing to "present her with her freedom" could be read either way, and he's not necessarily reliable anyway.
But then the Narrator locks you in the basement, and she says, outright, "We're supposed to leave now." There's a way this story is supposed to go, and she understands what it is. And then a couple lines later, you ask her if she can open the door, and she says this:
"I don't know. Do you think I can?"
It's almost as though she's aware on some level that what she can do is determined by your perception of her. If you think she can open the door, she can open it. If not... maybe she can't. Most, if not all (I'm not putting that much stock in my own memory) of the other Princesses don't show any awareness of how dependent they are on perception. But she gets it, somehow.
#But also this adds onto my idea that both The Damsel and The Smitten use the idea of being in love to escape from their own guilt#or other negative feelings#I 100% believe that the only voice truely ‘in love’ with the princess is (besides hero) is Stubborn#Damsel disappears and Smitten immediately wants to go Preen to escape Thinking.#Aversary disapears and Stubborn thinks the best thing to find on other other side of the mirror is her.#Slay the princess#stp#stp the damsel#slay the princess spoilers#stp spoilers

I just want to say that I love the idea of Doom and Steven as Both Dads, because they both have a chronic adoption problem, and both handle it and Parent in opposite ways.
Exhibit 1:
Jasmine: I’m the one who makes the group noticeable. How do I avoid the ‘wild girl’ description?
Steven: I have the perfect disguise.
Steven: *Gets a fancy dress, fake earrings, makeup, helps with putting them all on and styling Jasmine’s hair.*
Doom: *Gives her a hat*
Doom: Anyone asks, you’re a boy now.

The Long Quiet hugs Hero?
Like, he deserves it. Bro comes in clutch in so many runs and is one of the few constants in all of ‘em, being one of the beings, other than the Shifting Mound herself, that most understands Quiet + their struggles (at least imo, Hero’s my blorbo so I’m probs a bit biased lol)

Every time I reach this scene, I’m painfully reminded that it was only on my third playthrough that I realised the “Right behind you!” Option meant “I’m right behind you!” And not ‘Points finger “It’s right behind you!”’ As a mean spirited option.
