I don't know anything about the first or last games, but I DO know Detention! You can thank ManlyBadassHero for my wide knowledge of random indie horror games 😅 But Detention is a cult classic! 👀

I think many of the boys wouldn't initially be scared of the premise of Detention; their school is already technically "haunted" and this is a dorm school so they already technically don't leave the school. But as things progress, and Yuu might need to explain some of the cultural things to give a bit of context, they become less and less confident in their initial assessment.

Honestly it's a great little horror game (and also a neat little commentary on certain aspects of politics and culture in China)

On a different note: I had to look up the other two to see if I knew them and HELLO LITTLE GOODY TWO SHOES??? IS THAT A POCKET MIRROR PREQUAL?!?!?! Uuuuuhhhhhhgggggggg Astral Shift does old-school anime aesthetics SO well I waaaaaant 😫😫 I need to see how much it is on steam and switch!!

Another AO3 app that's pretending to be official when it's not (or at least isn't making it clear its unofficial.) They're using AO3's name and logo, and embedding ads.

There is no official AO3 app

Someone else is gathering your data, potentially your log in information etc and making use of it how they please. (They say they're not but their privacy policy says otherwise)

They are making money from the ads without the fic writer's consent.

They've also rated it Pegi 3 (which is ludicrous)

So I was thinking about epithets yesterday and how when they're used well they really add to the work and when they're used poorly it feels like the author has thrown a cinderblock in front of you while you're moving at a brisk walk, and then I got floostered (flu vaxx and covid booster) and managed to edit this ugly but hopefully helpful flowchart together through my flooster fever.

The question I always come back to is, "How would I, as the viewpoint character, think about this other character?" I think about my wife by her name or her relationship to me. I don't think of her as "the blue-haired woman," or "the taller woman."

This obviously doesn't cover every single permutation of epithet use out there in the would, but if I can help one person avoid writing, "Scarlett walked into the kitchen, hungry and annoyed about it. The redheaded woman found she had no snacks and grumbled," it'll be worth it.

(This is not a callout post for anyone in particular. It's just intended as general writing advice, because I had to figure out a lot of this shit for myself when I first started telling stories!)

after the news about duolingo shifting to AI generated translations and only using human staff to check that the translations were bare minimum “acceptable” I switched my german lessons to busuu and I’ve only been doing it a month but it already feels like a more helpful interface. there’s typically way more german text onscreen than there is english (e.g. the headers and lesson instructions being in german), they use more complex compound words that start becoming recognizable in context, they give WAY more detailed explanations of grammar rules, and occasionally there’s a written short answer you submit to get feedback from other real users who are fluent. I don’t think they offer as wide a range of languages but if anyone is looking to jump ship from duolingo I’d recommend checking them out
