This is a very layered conversation. Despite what we've seen between them we know about Yang and Tais past and how much she was forced to step up for him and Ruby. Those feelings are very much still present to this day and while I'm glad he was there when she lost her arm the fact that Raven is here for Yang more than Tai, even if it's just physically as I doubt, they're talking properly if at all, is most likely setting off her trauma bells.
Like Ruby said maybe there’s more to it but tell that Yang and her abandonment issues and her and Rubys shared childhood trauma.
Alright. So while I wish this got the six min ep length instead of Little’s episode what we got was still enjoyable to say the least. Focusing on the Xio-Long Rose sister relationship post Ever After was definitely something people wanted to see, outside of romantic stuff Ruby and Yangs relationship is probably one of the most loved in the FNDM so I’m sure many shared concerns on how they’d handle it here.
I’m glad to say that it was done really well. The entire episode was the sisters being sisters again and by that I mean Yang actually feels like she’s being and Older sister. Something that, in my and many other peoples opinion, is a trait she’d lost in the last two volumes especially.
I like the vibe they gave off from the start with Yang worrying about how Ruby will react to her surprise and trying to get Rubys hopes up but just not too much. A lot has changed between them and she doesn’t want to bring yet another disappointment to her sisters life. A life that she’s still so proud of Ruby for living.
Yang is so proud of Ruby. You can see it when Ruby gets talked to by the crowd that there is worry in her gaze but also just pure unadulterated pride as well. As for Ruby herself she just glad to be hanging out with her sister again, both being a little nervous about all the fame she’d gotten and letting Yang know that despite everything she will always be her sister and any other thoughts against that are ridiculous to her.
I do think the reassurance about them being sisters is important however. It directly ties in to both what happened in V9 and their conversation going forward. Speaking of…
I find it both hilarious and curious that this drink was part of their lives pre-Beacon. I’m glad we got a bit more info on their lives back then and its still something That Ruby seems to love even now despite everything that’s happened to her.
But that’s the thing. Those things DID happen to him. A good portion of it being Yangs own fault and failures as her sister. Something she brings up and apologies for.
Do I wish this was animated? Yes. But with RT being in the state it’s in I’m glad that this happened and didn’t devolve into Ruby apologizing for what she said. Was she out of line a little? Yes. But she was also justified. Yang knows that, confirms that and reassures her sister that she and the rest of the team will never let that happen again.
Ruby in turn saying that it’s still difficult to ask for help and the two of them deciding on a code name based off something they both loved is just the cherry on top of this little short.
