The Raven Queen was built by me!
Getting to premiere her this last weekend at fan expo cleveland was an absolute blast! Everyone was so kind and I had so much fun having people roll saving throws for prizes in my reliquary dice tower.
This was a passion project from the heart of a forever DM. I wanted to combine design elements from the queen's many d&d related related appearances that all mean so much to me (like critical role, the adventure zone and even her description in bg3 etc etc) . I was shocked so many people recognized me off the bat and wanted to come tell me all about their interactions with the raven queen from their home games! Who knew I had so many clerics, paladins, warlocks, and escaped souls?
Thank you so much to vaxyldan for agreeing to be my human prop for these photos. They knocked it out of the park and while we just just get to enjoy the mystery of them walking away in this photo, you will see them being very cool in some up coming pictures (I gotta give you something to look forward to, right? Bait the hook?)
iroun.photos was wonderful to work worth, professional and kind and all the images... BUCKLE UP GANG, you're gonna just love them.

This is a FANTASTIC break down but I have some in progress shots from my fearne staff that might illustrate some of these points as well as show some of the choice you can make to turn a fantasy object into something VERY sturdy.
One of my favorite tricks in cosplay judging panels as lifting my prop up high and dropping it on the floor and going 'TADA' when nothing so much as chips.
you CAN make a light weight dowel rod LOOK wigglier than it is.
When it comes to being unbreakable, few things beat those long long hardware store 1 inch dowel rods. love those guys.
you can build it up with layers and layers of things like craft foam, foam clay, styrofoam, and you can re-enforce that with heavy jewelry wire.
you can see my wires peaking out of my foam clay here (the fishing line is hooked to the ceiling to hold it up while I sculpt). These layers of foam and wire ARE fragile at the moment but you can then...
2. Wrap that bad boy in thermoplastic. (sorry I only had this step left on the insta stories).
Why wouldn't I just build the whole thing out of sturdy sturdy worbla?
well, It would be cost prohibitive but more importantly all those little foam branches without their foam and wire cores would be very brittle, much like folks having 3d printed fearne staff issues. By having these bendy cores your staff becomes very impact resistance, think about things like bridges that have a natural give and wiggle so they don't break!
Even if one part fails (like the wire ungluing from the wood or the worbla shell crack) there are layers and layers of structure that will keep your staff in one piece.
3. If you can, attach your fancy bits in layer, not with a single clean point of contact.
I sculpted my snakes with a light wire and tin foil core and glued them to the staff but THEN added more worbla wrapped wire over top as insurance. even if my glue fails, my snakes are safely nestled in a holder like the glass beaker in a french press or a fish in a net.
The floral wires are attached in a similar way and I just wrapped them in painters tape and plastic while I was painting. Using a flower on a long bendable wire adds more length and shape to your chubby little branches making them look more warped and natural.
once its painted, you will never notice a single glaring seam.
if you have a sturdy core, a light flexible inner sculpt, and layers of fail-safes in your staff, that bugger isn't going ANYWHERE. This staff has been chucked into cars, taken to many cons, dropped plenty, and even played with by kids in my family. its good as new.
last but not least, give yourself some grace.
if part of your staff is doomed to be a problem, make it easy to remove and repair. I was worried my swinging light up lantern would be prone to issues so I made it easy to pop off (its held on with a green sandwich bag tie!). If something is small and fragile, thinking about ways to maybe make it magnetic, wired on or even attached with a sewing snap.
this is just one person's real world take on fearne's staff but may it help you eyeball how you may want to make your own.
A Fearne Cosplayer told me that the 3d prints of the staff- and often the non-3d prints of the staff- break with almost certain regularity.
Is this true? Has anyone noted a definite weak point? What is wrong with the design that causes that? Where does it break?

your last 2 gorgeous cosplay posts have somehow become the "i can be your angle or yuor devil" meme in my brain...
no idea if on purpose, do hope someone's timeline matched up for it
It is a little bit on purpose! I wanted to do a trio that matched both kinda-classic dnd tropes and valentine's pin up characters (a nurse/angel cleric, a dommy mommy goth wizard, a secret for tomorrow) but also had a lot of contrast from each other, very pale and bright vs very dark and shadowy vs bright and colorful.
I also wanted to pick dnd races that reflected a mixed fantasy heritage, its v-day, we should be thinking about boning and making little creatures.
