The Raven Queen was built by me!

Getting to premiere her this last weekend at fan expo cleveland was an absolute blast! Everyone was so kind and I had so much fun having people roll saving throws for prizes in my reliquary dice tower.

This was a passion project from the heart of a forever DM. I wanted to combine design elements from the queen's many d&d related related appearances that all mean so much to me (like critical role, the adventure zone and even her description in bg3 etc etc) . I was shocked so many people recognized me off the bat and wanted to come tell me all about their interactions with the raven queen from their home games! Who knew I had so many clerics, paladins, warlocks, and escaped souls?

Thank you so much to vaxyldan for agreeing to be my human prop for these photos. They knocked it out of the park and while we just just get to enjoy the mystery of them walking away in this photo, you will see them being very cool in some up coming pictures (I gotta give you something to look forward to, right? Bait the hook?)

iroun.photos was wonderful to work worth, professional and kind and all the images... BUCKLE UP GANG, you're gonna just love them.

It is fascinating how the Raven Queen’s vision was so different from the Dawnfather’s and the Changebringer’s. Yes, Ruidus is a threat to everyone, not just the gods, and it’s clear the gods don’t want to die and don’t want humanity to suffer a terrible fate. But whereas the Dawnfather’s message to Deanna was, “I returned you to life and granted you gifts, now you must aid me against this threat,” and the Changebringer’s message to FCG was, “something terrible threatens us all, walk my path and grant me your faith so we can defeat it,” the Raven Queen didn’t speak at all. Orym asked how the group could help and she didn’t speak on behalf of herself. She showed them what’s happening to Vax, her beloved champion, how he was stolen from her protection and trapped in endless suffering. She didn’t appeal to the greater good of the world. Her answer was, “Someone I love is suffering and I cannot reach him. Save him. Free him. Help me by helping him.” There is something beautifully, selfishly human in that.

I think Vax seeing the Raven Queen is a conscious choice on her part but the more I think about it the more that fascinates me. It’s not just that Vax sees the Raven Queen, it’s that she sees him. She appears in death and winter as is her prerogative but each time she turns towards him. Even from the top of a temple across the city, she stops, straightens up, and studies Vax.

She’s not just watching him in the way that gods watch mortals. For entertainment or distant usefulness. She has clerics and acolytes and holy people to do her bidding. Who would love to be her champion. Who serve her and are waiting for her call. She has granted power and ability to any number of people since her ascension and I have no doubt that some have seen her in her holiest places, but Vax is not hers. Not yet. And she still appears.

Not only is he not hers, thus far he has been largely ambivalent to the gods as a whole. But here she is studying Vax. Fate-touched as we know he is, her interest admittedly makes sense but she’s not just trusting in fate here. The Raven Queen believes in fate and inevitability with a conviction that is rooted in her own divinity. She sees the strings of fate like no one else can. And yet.

She is making a deliberate choice to show her interest in a way that he will understand. Before the pieces fall into place she is making moves that very likely direct his actions. Shaping his story or at the very least steering him towards a specific choice. She is the god of fate, the god of the inevitable, and yet she is choosing to interfere.

It’s so much easier to believe that what is coming next is inevitable. But I don’t think it is. If it was there would be no reason for the Raven Queen to steer the course of fate. She is studying Vax because it is truly his choice. Because her champion isn’t a person brought to her by inevitability but one who has to decide for himself in one specific moment that this is the fate he’d rather have.

The Raven Queen removes her mask. Where her face should be, there is only void.

Orym, Ashton, and Chetney are pulled into shadows. They hear the clanking of metal, of chains. They look up from a hole, like looking up from a grave, looking up into the light. The Raven Queen's figure looms over them, chains on shackles on her wrists dangling into the hole.

Ashton grabs onto the chain and climbs. Orym and Chetney follow after. They climb until they reach the shackles.

The shackles break. The Raven Queen raises her arms and the three fall. Giant black raven wings sprout from her back as she flies upward. Higher and higher until her form bursts into ravens.

They don't feel scared. They feel noticed and oddly appreciated.
