of course deduction as showcased in Sherlock Holmes is not really possible, especially not in the modern era where class-specific markers are broken down/absent/ambiguous, but consider: I identified the occupation of a colleague's parent based on vocabulary

Boquila! Yay!
White and Yamashita 2022! Boo!
This is kind of hard to condense into a single post because I have now read so much on this. But. Oh boy oh boy.
Here's the thing. We don't know how Boquila does SHIT. Never mind how it senses neighboring plants, what drives the phenotypic changes we see? How does it DO that?
Unfortunately, again, we don't know the answer. But I am pretty well qualified to talk about that... "experiment."
Here's the TLDR: White and Yamashita 2022 is a garbage paper that might not have been peer reviewed and what they describe is not an experiment.
The longer version:
White is a guy in Utah. He isn't a scientist. He is a guy in Utah who observed his house plants and then contacted a researcher in Germany (Baluska) whose lab Yamashita worked (works?) in. Baluska, by the way, published a paper claiming that plants exhibit complex thought and we know this because some of them can't reproduce with themselves.
Anyway, Baluska sent Yamashita to Utah to take some measurements. Then they published White and Yamashita 2022 without replicating the "experiment" under controlled conditions.
I keep putting "experiment" in scare quotes because it is, simply speaking, not one. There was no control (negative or positive). There weren't multiple treatments. There are house plants in a room without climate control that could have had any number of contaminants or confounding variables. I want to make it clear for the anti-intellectuals out there that this isn't snobbery, it's insisting on the scientific method.
Why do I think this paper might not have been peer reviewed? Well, there are some pretty glaring errors. Like, "spell check should have found these" level errors. They misspell "length" in one of their graphs.
Also, when it comes down to sensing the presence or absence of light, that's not really sight. That's photo/skototropism. Photoreceptors are NOT eyes (though they are components of eyes). The proposed structure of the ocelli is a lens in an epidermal cell that focuses light toward photoreceptors a few layers deeper in the leaf. And this isn't that outlandish - we know that comparable structures exist in green algae and in bacteria, usually associated with flagellar movement.
Now, with all that out of the way: I do genuinely think that eyes are the most plausible sensory mechanism for Boquila.
The other hypotheses also don't really have support and raise a lot of questions of mechanism that make me really dissatisfied with them. However, I really wish that someone would actually do that experiment so that I could cite something about the possibility of ocelli in Boquila without my skin crawling.
EDIT: The guy in Utah's name is White, not Smith. I don't know why I keep thinking his name is Smith, but this is the second time this week I've made that mistake.

My condolonces to the Kaishin fans, but Kaito and Shinichi being revealed to be cousins is so funny though, can you imagine if there was a family reunion??
Yusaku's like "hey Shinichi we're gonna meet my twin's family who I haven't seen in years and just found out about now" and when they show up, Kaito and Conan immediately lock eyes and do the spider-man pointing meme or something.
Shinichi/Conan will immediately guess that Kaito is his long-time arch rival and Kaito's internally screaming, just, "OH SHIT OH FUCK ARE YOU KIDDING ME WHAT THE HELL" and wonder why the world has it out for him.

why did it take you 479 chapters to suspect that conan and shinichi are in contact with each other when one of conan's favorite excuses is 'i called shinichi'

here's a fun parchment fact for you re: reusing a surface: sheepskin was often used for legal documents because it's hard to scrape out a word and rewrite without it being obviously damaged, unlike good quality calfskin where it can be undetectable that something has been altered
