Little things in the hidden injury trope that give me life more than water does
Tying something between their teeth to stop their cries from being heard while they treat themselves in the dark
Bloodied bandages stuffed into the gap between the wall and the bed
Whumpee wearing long sleeves/pants but their bandages still finding a way to peek out
Blood running down their limb from inside their clothes and dripping onto the ground
Bloody footprints
Bloody handprints
Faint bloodstains on the floor that whumpee can’t get off no matter how hard they scrub
Whumpee limping as soon as the other person turns their back
Dark undereyes from obv no sleep
Those sexy beads of sweat and pale skin
Leaning against wall/ furniture whenever they get the chance
When a normally talkative character is quiet
Controlling their breath while they try to complete normal tasks but then doubling over and gasping for air behind closed doors
When they peel back the bandages to check their injury and it’s gotten worse
Whumpee trying to bring it up with someone but then deciding against it when the other person starts talking about future plans
Someone in the team feeling like there’s something wrong with whumpee but not knowing what so they don’t bring it up and then the GUILT they feel afterwards holy
Whumpee FINALLY fainting - behind closed doors and being found by someone later or just dropping to the ground while they’re with someone else
I mean just imagine character A talking and thinking whumpee is beside them and whumpee just drops out of frame with a sigh and a thud
Whumpee trying to tell the others that they’re fine and that they can handle it while they’re literally bleeding out on the ground
Bonus! The scene afterwards when whumpee wakes up and their wounds are bound in those crisp white bandages instead of the bloodied, dirtied torn pieces of clothing they’d used before

I wonder how Geralt would have reacted if he knew that Jaskier was actually tortured, not just “in trouble.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ohh, we all know h/c prompts get me going like nothing. (And oh damn, Yennefer will keep appearing, I feel it, I'm sliding)
It's not that Geralt doesn't care, I sometimes think it comes from the other way around. Because I do believe he's seen Jaskier weaseling himself out of sticky situations, again and again, and he is resourceful. Like. Jaskier does stupid, dangerous shit all the time, and he always comes out alright.

Another thing I wish would happen in the next season but I know won’t:
Jaskier growing uneasy around a fire and Yennefer and/or Geralt noticing. Yennefer would give him a soft look telling him silently “it’s okay, you’re fine” while Geralt is just confused.
Maybe Geralt would get an explanation later and then there is this realisation that Jaskier was tortured.

The bard is born from the earth itself, shaped from dirt and clay for one key purpose.
Find Geralt of Rivia and allow him to fulfill his destiny.
But first the bard must decide who he is.

"Your witcher is an abomination. His head belongs on a wall."
In the aftermath of the attack which left Jaskier temporarily mute, he and Geralt find themselves facing yet another attack - this one from bandits who've been hunting Geralt.
Sequel to "Should Have Stayed at Home", and written for Whumptober for the prompt "insults".

"Geralt! Fucking kill it already!"
He was barely able to finish his cry before the tentacle tightened around his throat like a slick, rancid noose, and what little oxygen he was able to take in was abruptly cut off.
Written for Whumptober Day 2, for the prompt "choking".

things that are extremely fucking sexy:
whumpee desperately pleading for caretaker to do anything to make the pain stop because they’ve put up with it for too long and their life doesn’t feel worth living anymore
whumpee being carried in caretaker’s arms with their head lolling against caretaker’s shoulder because they don’t have the energy to hold it up themselves
whumpee protectively cradling an injury even after whumper has left because they’re still scared that something will aggravate the pain

FRENEMY ALERT
Tumblr media
Hey everyone 🤗
We all know that suffering and comfort go very well together, like a warm blanket and some cuddles in front of a cozy fire. We believe that some of you are planning to include both in your works. 😇 So in case you haven’t found the right inspiration for your angst and whump or are just an event hoarder (we don’t judge!) - we wanted to make you aware of our FRENEMIES over at @whumptober2021.
Just like us, they allow cross-event participation and would happily see some Fluff and Whump combined. (Loose interpretation of what they said you say? DETAILS! We say: LOVE). And who are we to judge? We all know that this is the best kind of Whump - combined with lots of love and comfort and fluff. 🥰
It’s no secret that Whumptober has been around for years (decades? who knows) and that we're the side-character, the new frenemy on the show. But we're just happy to get closer to them... even if that means to be bound to a chair 😏 So go, add some fluff to their angst, bind and soothe those angsty wounds, and give them all a hug... whumpers certainly need it!
~ your mods
PS: A big thanks to the mods of Whumptober for their creative and hilarious shout-out for us 😂😘 we couldn't help but reciprocate in kind. This feels like the start of a wonderful friendship... ehm, pardon me, frenemy-ship, of course 😉 ... and who doesn't love a good frenemies-to-lovers story, right?

I will always have a soft spot for this!
One of my favorite whump tropes is techie/smart member of the team and the resident badass/tough dude (I use dude as a gender neutral term)  like I love all the scenarios
- Tech person getting injured and having to provide instructions to resident badass because they have no idea what they’re doing. Trying to get patched up while on the verge of passing out and the other desperately drying to keep them awake. Lots of good dialogue here.
-When the techie gets captured and the badass goes BALLISTIC to go rescue them. (bonus if they had just recently had an argument and the techie felt like they weren’t a valuable part of the team)
- Techie goes through something traumatic and talking to their badass about it because they know that tough person has gone through it before
- Tough dude being the one to rescue the techie and being the one to tell them its all over
I use this trope for all my ocs its so good

I think my earliest experiences with whump come from way back when I was about five or six. I remember little stories written in pages torn from one of my sister’s school jotters, with characters from my favourite shows being captured or injured.
Find out about Wince editor Claire’s favorite writers, dream articles, and most beloved whump book here!

Hey fellow whumpers, it's that time of the year again. Whumptober 2021 is approaching slowly and things are in the making. Nothing official yet, so first things first :)
Hit us up with your current prompt-obsessions via asks, comments or reblog. We'll make a random selection and TRY to have the promptlist ready by early September :)

I wrote a review of the whump in the Uncharted video games! This is really different from anything I've ever written before and it's really nerve-wracking to see it released into the wild. But this has also been my baby for the past few months and I'm really excited to show it to you all now!
Please enjoy and thank you Ari for allowing me to publish this!
Tumblr media
In the days before pretty much every movie with any kind of hype behind it was delayed by a year, Uncharted was supposed to be out in cinemas by now, thirteen long years after it was first announced. But now we have to wait another EIGHT months for its release in February 2022 - which is, fun fact, the film’s seventh announced release date since 2016. It’s been a long wait for fans of the series but if the film is anything like the games, it’ll be worth it in the end - for whumpers, at least.

As someone who is very new to writing Star Wars whump, this article is a huge help!
Tumblr media
The world of Star Wars is sprawling and rich, expanded upon illustrated dictionaries, tie-in novels, video games, two television shows with more in the works, and at least (depending on how you count them) 11 films. There are thousands of characters, hundreds of species, hundreds of years, and dozens of planets of planets to contend with. At this point, Star Wars practically its own genre. Which makes for an incredibly broad palette to draw from, but it also means that if you set out to write Star Wars whump, there’s a whole lot of lore to catch up on.
Thankfully, whump readers tend to be forgiving: you deliver the whumperflies, they deliver the kudos. But the Star Wars universe presents you with unique opportunities for both hurting and healing your characters, which you can leverage them for juicy whump that’s Star Wars specific. That’s what we’re here to talk about today: the mechanics of hurt and healing in the Star Wars universe.
Today Ari ( @withalittlebitofwhump / @starwarswhump ) brings you a guide to writing whump and hurt/comfort in the Star Wars universe, covering everything from swearing to Sith lightning, blasters to bacta.
You can read “Writing Whump in a Galaxy Far, Far Away” ✨ here! ✨
Happy Star Wars Day, and May the 4th be with you!

1. The Specifier
The Specifier only focuses on a couple of whumpy tropes. They often won’t even care who it’s for, as long as it has those tropes. The tropes can vary in specificity. So your friendly neighborhood Specifier might like electrocution in general, or maybe they just like elbow bruises caused by a flail wielded by a 2nd century Tibetan monk. Although I would like to know where they found that one.

Wince Mag is open for FICTION SUBMISSIONS on a rolling basis!
[While this post is about fiction, we’re open to nonfiction as well – you can read about that here.]
What is Wince?
Wince is an archive and online magazine of hurt/comfort and whump. You can read our about page here.
What do you publish?
We’re interested in publishing your short, whumpy original stories.
We’re looking for 500 - 5k word short stories that hit that whumpy sweet spot while exhibiting characteristics of a good short story – plot, characterization, readable prose. Interesting world building, unique concepts, and expert execution of beloved tropes are great ways to catch the editors’ attention.
This means we’re not interested in vignettes or excerpts that can’t stand on their own, generic whump writing that uses “whumpee” or “caretaker” in place of names, or stories that require a previous understanding of any certain world.
At this time, we publish original works only. If you’d like to file the serial numbers off of fanfiction and scramble some details a bit, go for it! We’d be happy to take a look.
You can read the fiction we’ve previously published here.
Who do you publish?
Just about anyone, as long as they’re 18+. We’re happy to publish anonymously or under pseudonyms.
Can you be more specific? What are some things you’re interested in publishing?
Per our hard sells and wishlist page, we’re interested in:
Tumblr media
We’re generally not interested in extremes of violence, gore, or language. Think PG-13, not R. We probably won’t publish content with sexual violence. Conditioning and extended captivity are also hard sells.
That being said, don’t self-reject! We’re happy to read whatever you think might interest us.
Great! How do I submit?
Look over our hard sells and wishlists page and our submissions guidelines, then head on over to our submission form. If you’re unable to use the form for any reason, you can also contact us at wincemag at gmail dot com or via Tumblr.
We’re so excited to read your stories!
