quick update for anyone who sees this, I've made a new blog @annes-room to post study stuff and a mix of personal too. I'm keeping this blog up as a kind of archive of my time in my astrophysics program, but I won't be active here anymore. I hope to keep seeing y'all around :)

taking a step back from this blog for a bit. I made the decision to change programs/majors and now I’m at a bit of a loss for what to do. when I come back to this, the appearance and content might change a bit. see y’all in a little while

⭐ day 12: what’s a movie you enjoy that’s related to your field of study?
I know everyone says Interstellar is their favourite astrophysics movie, but I actually didn’t like it that much. I didn’t really understand the plot that much though, so that could be why. we’ll never know.
one that I do love though is The Imitation Game! it just holds a special place in my mind. as someone who is queer, neurodivergent and loves math and coding, it is so understandable to watch. Not always the easiest to watch, I always have a twinge of anxiety during war movies, but I always enjoy it :) not to mention, the score is incredible! it's in my study playlist

was busy yesterday oops 🤭
⭐ day 10: what subject related book would you recommend?
tbh I don't read a lot of books about physics, but I've always had an interest in Chernobyl, so I'd recommend Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham. it's super well done, explaining how nuclear reactors work, how Chernobyl happened, the containment, and the trial afterwards.
⭐ day 11: do you have any hobbies or special talents?
my biggest hobby outside of school right now is D&D! I'm in two campaigns, one where I play a halfling monk named Faucet, and the other is a homebrew class for an alchemist named Charlotte <3

took a break from posting yesterday so I've got two answers today!
⭐ day 8: what do you find difficult within your subject?
honestly, I think it boils down to the speed at which classes are taught :( my physics profs tend to rush through material and then I don't have enough time to properly learn and understand it :/ I've had one prof for three different courses and he purposefully makes the classes to packed with content that he often has to cut things out because there's not enough time
⭐ day 9: what is your favourite song on your study playlist?
definitely Raindrops from the Daredevil season 2 soundtrack! it has such a nice slow build and is so calming and relaxing to listen to that I have it in other playlists as well!
my study playlist is made up of movie/tv soundtracks, so my favouites overall are How to Train Your Dragon, Oz the Great and Powerful, the Queen's Gambit, and the Princess Bride :)

⭐ day 7: what is an interesting fact you learned recently?
my dad and I were talking about the Voyager missions at dinner and he told me that they had turned off systems that were once deemed necessary for maintenance to start preserving power. several were heating systems meant to protect the craft from the freezing temperatures of outer space, but seems to still be operating normally without them, for several years! I think that's pretty neat :)
could be applicable for our own lives. like maybe you can keep living without something you once thought you couldn't survive without.

❄️ day 1 of my winter semester!
after 2 blissful weeks of doing nothing but relaxing and spending time with my friends, it's time to go back to class 😔 we did nothing but go over syllabuses which is a nice easy start but my classes are spread all over campus, so I'll definitely get my steps in.
January stemblr challenge time!
⭐ day 6: where would you like your subject to take you?
I originally went into my program with the end goal of doing lab research and analysis. after a year and a half of doing lab components for courses, I no longer want to do lab work 😅 I am still interested in analysis, so I'm more focussed on following a data science or stats route now

January stemblr challenge!
⭐ day 5: if you were to describe your subjects in one word what would it be?
tumultuous (excited, confused, disorderly)
I think this sums up the courses I like and dislike. I find I’m always scraping by to stay on top of things (disorderly), and I don’t have enough time to properly learn and absorb class material (confused). but when there’s something that I like and I’m good at, I can dive right in and power through it, and that’s the exciting part
winter term starts tomorrow, and I’m equally excited and nervous. I’m excited for half of my classes, but not the other half, so I guess we’ll see how the first day goes :)

⭐ January stemblr challenge day 4: what is your favourite topic within your subjects?
mine is definitely calculus!! something about working with formulas and using little tricks and algorithms on them itches my brain so much 😌 like taking derivatives: give me something gross and I'll plug away at it. give me an integral and I'll use some fun substitutions to find where it came from. my last calc course introduced sequences and series, which wasn't super interesting because all it boiled down to was "does this converge or diverge?" and I always used the wrong tests to figure that out which was frustrating. the second half of the course was more vector calculus and doing integrals in different coordinates (cylindrical and spherical) which I found a lot more engaging ✨
