Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson follows our main character Lia as she uncovers how her best friend, Cassie, died.
We also see Lia and how she navigates her relationships with her family, those around her, and food.
Her eating disorder is realistically portrayed and (in my opinion) isn’t romanticized, this applies to her other illnesses.
Nobody in this book is perfect, nobody’s good, and nobody’s bad. They are all just people who are trying to help in their own way (to various success).
If you like books that make you feel for the main character and her pain, pick up Wintergirls!
