the thing is even if the writing of the soc spinoff is supposedly better, it doesn’t really change things for me cause the things they did to the crows’ character arcs in sab s2 are pretty much irreversible. they killed off tante heleen, barely addressed inej’s trauma in general and already put her on a slavers hunting ship, so they basically sniped her entire arc and scenes like climbing up the chimney just wouldn’t have the impact they’re supposed to. jesper’s inner struggle with his grisha powers was solved by one pep talk from the shu saint and suddenly it’s not a problem anymore. yeah wylan still has the whole thing with his father, although the way they used his dyslexia only for wesper conflict was in really poor taste in my opinion. kaz already had his face-off with pekka, which also removes his main motivation for everything he did in the books and they used some of the most pivotal scenes of ck already. they haven’t butchered nina and matthias entirely cause they were pretty much sidelined the entire season so there’s that ig.

the thing i love the most about the books is the character arcs and relationships. yes the ice court heist is cool, but it was never the main thing that made these books so lovable - it was always the characters. so they might still recreate the plot somehow, but the essence that made it so great in the first place will be missing.

Okay here’s an idea:

How about we all collectively forget this season happened and start a petition for a SOC spinoff in which they just redo the scenes, but this time with proper context and in the right order?

I’m so conflicted about Shadow and Bone season 2 rn it’s not even funny anymore.

On one hand I’m so mad I just want to walk away from this show and pretend it never happened.

On the other, the cast is absolute perfection and they literally poured their hearts and souls into these characters and I want them to be able to play them again and have a script to do it right this time.

So.. rewatching it is, I guess.

Also while some of the book fans might even be happy to get these scenes bc they’ve been waiting for them for years, for „only-show-watchers“ it’s gonna ruin the perfection of what the story actually is.

There is a reason for why all the ships developed so slowly in the books. There is a reason for why we didn’t get Kaz‘s backstory just thrown at us within the first two chapters of the book. There is a reason for ALL OF IT and it makes these books into absolute masterpieces and THIS is what you decide to do with it?

the without armor scene…. in the context of the show and everything kaz has revealed to her it makes inej look mean. he is already taking off his armor for you inej

Another shadow and bone season 2 rant bc thoughts are fresh and I want to get them out while I’m still angry enough to write them down.

Again, spoilers ahead. You’ve been warned.

Idk if it’s just me, but, and it pains every last inch of my soul to say this, Inej didn’t feel like Inej this season.

The thing I always really appreciated about hers and Kaz’s relationship was that they understood each other bc they’d both been THROUGH IT. So on one hand, she was always understanding of his trauma bc she knew what it was like and was herself still dealing with a lot. On the other hand, she also had certain standards and expectations that she wasn’t just going to drop of Kaz wasn’t also making an effort, which is great.

BUT the whole „I will have you without armor“ scene happens in book 1. After Kaz called her an investment. After he let her scale an incinerator shaft in which she almost died. After he didn’t make enough of an effort to better himself for her, to at least try and get better.

She didn’t just say it bc he wasn’t getting well fast enough. She knows it doesn’t work that way. She said it bc he wasn’t getting better AT ALL, because he wasn’t even trying.

But in the show?? I’m sorry but show!Kaz is literally on his knees for her. He’s put everything on the line to buy her out, did the whole taking down Pekka Rollins thing to buy her out AGAIN, went to retrieve that blade to help Alina bc he knew how much it would mean to her (we all know that’s the real reason, right), tried to help her clean the wound, told her about his brother AND asked her to stay in Ketterdam with him.

For anyone else, that might not be much, but she SAW the way he panicked without his gloves. She saw how much effort it takes him to let anyone in. She saw that he’s actually trying.

And still, she drops that line and just.. leaves? Just like that? To me it almost kinda felt like „you’re not getting better fast enough for me and I’m not here for that“ and I HATE that, because it isn’t her.

Also, when Kaz told her about his plan to confront Pekka, he TOLD HER how important this was for him. He even said „It’ll be some comfort to know you’re somewhere in the shadows“. And she told him she wouldn’t miss it.

But SHE DID. And then, when he actually confronted her about it, SHE was mad.

I’m sorry.. what? Did it really take that long to save 3 women? Did they have to add that in at all?

The scene between Kaz and Pekka was one of the keypoints in the books. It was THE THING that everything Kaz had been working for for YEARS had been leading up to. THAT scene. That moment.

And Inej wasn’t there for it when she promised Kaz she would be. When she KNEW what this moment would mean to him.

I’m sorry, but I’m with him on this one. Book Inej would never.

I’m sorry but I’m so disappointed by season 2 of shadow and bone..

*spoilers ahead, beware*

Now hear me out: I KNOW it’s impossible for them to follow the books exactly. Which is fine. I’m sure they did their best.

But was it really necessary to rush everything to the point of some of the MOST IMPORTANT scenes of the book completely losing their impact?? Like Kaz taking down Pekka?? He did it so easily? So quickly?? What about brick by brick? And the fight scene with the dregs?? Where was the tension?? Where was the „umph“??

And, worst of all, the „bathroom scene“? I’m sorry but this is the one I can’t forgive. If this is supposed to be THE bathroom scene then they did us dirty.

I’m thankful we got a lot of the crows. But.. why did they put in all of these really important scenes but totally out of context? If you’re making up new shit, just make up ALL of it and then give us the actual book content when you have the means and time to do it fully. But like this, everything felt rushed and shallow.

Just finished reading The Aurelian Cycle by Rosaria Munda and all I have to say is LEE SUR PALLOR HAS MY WHOLE HEART.
