And this is it. Pesach is about telling our story, one so important and central to the Jewish people that we remember a piece of it every single Shabbat.
There are places within the Seder where we can (and should, and well written haggadot lead us to) talk about the issues of oppression and liberation, because all of those things are actually a part of our story. But the Seder needs to be about our story.
I don’t know exactly what was said around this bastardization of a Seder plate. I don’t know how or why no one had a Seder plate or even an appropriate picture of one to use as reference. I don’t know why they didn’t know that the additions to the Seder plate are not substitutions. It makes me wonder what sorts of Seders the organizers have been to before.
It really makes me wonder who wrote the haggadah they used. Even JVP’s own Haggadah does not substantiate any of this.
I don’t think anyone involved realizes how massively they messed up. It’s not just the backwards Hebrew, at all.
This shit is so hilarious I had to reactivate this blog just to share it:

It cannot be stressed enough that Israel is the ONLY country "Leftists" feel comfortable talking about this way.
There's no support for anti-war and anti-government protests on the ground in Israel (you know, the protests that might actually make a difference)
There's no empathy for or solidarity with civilian victims (only when it comes to Israeli civilians are you going to hear self-described Feminists and Leftists explain why rape is fine, actually)
No understanding of the difference between the state and its' citizens (or even the Jewish people, generally)
Absolutely no desire to actually learn about the history of the region and conflict comprehensively (the expulsion of over 700,000 Palestinians during the Nakba was horrific, and a crime that needs to be addressed. Out of curiosity, what was happening to the 800,000-1,000,000 Jews living in the surrounding Arab nations around then?)
All understanding of complexity and nuance? Of the concerns of minority, queer, disabled, and other vulnerable populations with the country? It's all out the window. It's all just one big Evil Zionist Entity.
This is how even accurate criticisms and condemnations of Israel can end up being antisemitic. You are viewing the Israeli state and the people who live there through a lens that you hold to no other nation-state on Earth. (and then holding random Jews in the diaspora to account for that).
You can do better and still advocate for Palestinian liberation and autonomy. It's actually not that hard.

THAT IS NOT HOW RECLAIMING WORKS
Tumblr media
Growing up, I was taught that when someone tells you who they are, believe them.
They don’t care about Palestine. They don’t care about Gaza. They care about going mask off.
Fucking believe them.

Reel in British English pronunciation is two syllables, in American English it is one. I love the audio options from OED for these things.
Just checking.... We all pronounce Miette like My-TAY in our heads, right?

You cannot be opposed to bigotry, malice and hate only when they’re expressed by your political opponents, and you cannot ignore bigotry permeating throughout your movement just because your movement is for a good cause. Doing (or allowing) the wrong thing for the right reason is still wrong. The ends don’t always justify the means, and the cause never does.
Also, we’re not leaving this in the tags:

Transcribed: #the left saw the provocateurs at the George Floyd protests and decided it would be a convenient excuse for all future protests #ecept that the provocateurs at the George Floyd protests were real and well-documented #and the provocateurs at the anti-Israel protests are mostly just antisemites genuinely there to protest #and chant their Jew hate #news flash: not all protests are good
leftists when white supremacists are virulently antisemitic: if there’s four people sitting at a table with a nazi, there are five nazis.
leftists when islamists, arab supremacists, and leftists are virulently antisemitic: well of course there’s bad actors at every protest, and anyway these are just outside provocateurs, and they didn’t do anything really, but if they did it’s because those jews fucking deserved it

This is a perfect opportunity to remind you that when a shocking social media post about an incident provides no link to corroboration of its claims, it is your responsibility to verify the claim before you spread it around.
There is a ton of news coverage of this case, the arrest of Arawa Shikh Ali for drug trafficking in the Shuafat refugee camp. And the information in the stories, from multiple reputable outlets is damning. Police brutalized the man so significantly that at least one cop was placed on house arrest during the investigation.
But absolutely none of the reporting includes the police claiming 16 simultaneous body camera malfunctions. The truth is even worse: police openly admitted that the officers did not turn their cameras on before executing the arrest warrant, intentionally choosing not to document their actions.
They made no effort to explain why, but the photos of Ali‘s injuries are sufficient explanation in themselves.
So why include an easily debunked and inflammatory lie in a tweet about a case that’s already unquestionably horrifying?
More importantly: how many times have you amplified social media posts about the Israel/Palestine issue, without verifying their claims?
And how many times were those claims only partially true or even entirely false?
And what happens when millions of people around the world share whatever aligns with their biases without regard for the truth?

Reminder: Jewish indigeneity is not a threat to any other ethnic group. It’s just a fact. Acknowledging Jews as indigenous to the levant doesn’t actually harm any Palestinians. Palestinian indigeneity does not actually rely on Jews NOT being indigenous. Multiple peoples can be indigenous to the same place.

When this is the centerpiece activity of your protest or encampment or whatever you’re doing, it’s not a legitimate protest, it’s a hate rally.
I sat next to the protest today.
I wrote fan-fiction about two gay jewish dads raising children to the play list of the chant- "No peace on stolen land!" on an American college campus. It isn't a name brand one either, nor does it have any legitimate ties to Israel. The anger is just there- it has rotten these future doctors, nurses, teachers, and members of society.
I don't even know what to call their demonstration- it was a tizzy of a Jew hatred affair. At points, there were empathetic statements about Gazans and their suffering. Then outright support of Hamas and violent resistance against all colonizers. Then this bizarre fixation on antisemitism while explaining the globalists are behind everything.
"Antisemitism doesn't exist. Not in the modern day," A professor gloated over a microphone in front of the library. "It's a weaponized concept, that's prevents us from getting actual places- ignore anyone who tells you otherwise."
"How can we be antisemitic?" A pasty white girl wearing a red Jordanian keffiyeh gloats five minutes later. "Palestinians are the actual semites."
"there is only one solution!" The crowd of over 50 students and faculty cried, over and over.
"Been there, done that," I thought, then added a reference to a mezuza in the fourth paragraph.
Two other Jewish students passed where I was parked out, hunching and trying to be as innocuous as possible. We laughed together at my predicament, where I am willingly hearing this bullshit and feeling so amused by this.
"Am I crazy? For sitting here?" I asked them. My friends shook their heads.
"We did the same last week- it's an amazing experience, isn't it?”
We all cackled hysterically again. They left to study for finals. Two minutes later, I learned from the current speaker that “Zionism” is behind everything bad in this world.
Forty-five minutes in, a boy I recognized joined me on my lonely bench. He came from a very secular Jewish family and had joined Hillel recently to learn more about his culture. His first Seder was two nights ago.
He sat next to me, heavy like the weight of the world was on his shoulders. There was just this despondent look on his face. I couldn’t describe it anyone else, but just sheer hopelessness personified.
“They hate us. I can’t believe how much they hate us.” He said in greeting.
And for the first time all day, I had no snarky response or glib. All I could do was stare out into the crowd, and sigh.

Clearly, some participants in this poll don’t even understand what a system of government is.
Please reblog for a greater sample size if you’re interested in the results!
Edit: While comments and commentary is much appreciated, please don’t give away whether a particular answer is correct or incorrect until after the poll!

Y'all, the world is sleeping on what NASA just pulled off with Voyager 1
The probe has been sending gibberish science data back to Earth, and scientists feared it was just the probe finally dying. You know, after working for 50 GODDAMN YEARS and LEAVING THE GODDAMN SOLAR SYSTEM and STILL CHURNING OUT GODDAMN DATA.
So they analyzed the gibberish and realized that in it was a total readout of EVERYTHING ON THE PROBE. Data, the programming, hardware specs and status, everything. They realized that one of the chips was malfunctioning.
So what do you do when your probe is 22 Billion km away and needs a fix? Why, you just REPROGRAM THAT ENTIRE GODDAMN THING. Told it to avoid the bad chip, store the data elsewhere.
Sent the new code on April 18th. Got a response on April 20th - yeah, it's so far away that it took that long just to transmit.
And the probe is working again.
From a programmer's perspective, that may be the most fucking impressive thing I have ever heard.

This poll was brought to you by the person who came and rang my doorbell and banged on my front door at 5:15 and again at 5:45 or so on Monday night, last night and again tonight. Who is this person? Why have they not called any of the inhabitants of my home if they need to see us so badly?
Oh shit, what if it was Elijah? He doesn’t have my number.
