Book Review: Recommended for You
Tumblr media
Recommended for You by Laura Silverman is a light-hearted love story about two teenagers who work in an indie bookstore and compete with each other to sell as many books as possible. I was expecting it to be more of a young adult novel, but I think it’s actually aimed more at a middle grade demographic. It’s a very cute stocking-stuffer Christmas present for a younger sister or cousin.
I downloaded the book because I’ve read You Asked for Perfect by the same author. I remember crying during You Asked for Perfect, but there were also definitely several scenes that I thought were too on-the-nose. Here, too, the writing is superficial. Silverman basically tells you what to think about everything. I could always tell exactly where the plot was headed. And it was always headed in a saccharine direction.
I think this review is a little unfair, because I was expecting a more complex read. But then again, I am someone who enjoys a lot of middle grade books - I love Rebecca Stead’s When You Reach Me and her Goodbye, Stranger. Her books proves my point, I think, that you can write complexly and richly for any age range.
On a more positive note, it’s a book about people who love books. I always like books like that, because I think my love of reading is the most defining thing about me. I don’t always read literary books, and I don’t always read attentively, and I don’t really read that much - med school problems, y’all - but reading is a part of my daily life. I love stories. I even love stories that frustrate me or ones I don’t really understand. When I was a kid, one thing that legitimately tripped me up was realising some people read books and just literally forget about them. I swear, if you pointed to any book from my bookcase at home, I would remember at least something about the plot.
So I liked reading about characters in a bookstore, characters who recommend stories to each other and text each other book review links. I liked the generally cosy and quirky feel of the story. I liked that the main character is short! And I liked her impulsive and vibrant personality.
The book touches upon some important themes. There’s some good discussion of class privilege. It also wins points for representation - the main character is Jewish, and her family’s annual Latkepalooza sounds amazing. The woman who owns the indie bookstore is a wheelchair-user, and the book emphasises the importance of disability accomodations.
Also, although I criticised the book for being an easy read, easy reads have a place on everyone’s bookshelf. If you’re in the mood for a light, low-commitment, bibliophilic story, this is a good option.

Luchenko’s the oldest player here, was World Champion before Elizabeth Harmon was born. He defeated the great Alekhine in an exhibition when he was a boy, played to a draw with Botvinnik, and crushed Bronstien in Havana.
