hakoda is the first one to know that sokka is bisexual. it’s not that hard to figure out. he has posters of shirtless wrestlers on his walls, his gaze lingers on pretty people of both genders, and he’s very obviously infatuated with his best friend. of course, hakoda doesn’t say anything once it hits him, wanting to give his son the space to come out when he’s ready, but it doesn’t happen.
days turn into weeks turn into months and eventually, hakoda tries to nudge him in the right direction. he uses gender neutral pronouns in regard to sokka’s future s/o and blatantly states that he’s accepting among other things, just to make sure that sokka’s not staying in the closet because he doesn’t think his family will love him anymore. but then, after an unexpected comment one night, it hits him.
sokka doesn’t realize he’s into guys.
it’s no secret that sokka can sometimes be very oblivious, so hakoda decides to play matchmaker. he encourages sokka to spend more time with zuko, invites him over for dinner, gives them cash to go out and do things, and it seems to work. sokka has to be realizing something, because he’s suddenly being really flirty and awkward around zuko the way he used to do when he liked yue.
finally, the day comes that sokka sits down and asks to talk to his dad. hakoda complies immediately, and talks through everything with sokka, helping him come to terms with the fact that he’s into guys. sokka explains that he’s still figuring it out and he’s a little afraid of his feelings, but hakoda walks him through it and promises that whatever happens, it’ll be okay. there’s just one problem.
when he was explaining how he realized he was into zuko, sokka detailed exactly what he felt, and how their dynamic changed when they started spending more time together. hakoda should have been listening to what sokka was saying, and joking about how he kind of knew all along, but he couldn’t. he was in no place to make fun of sokka for not realizing he was in love with his best friend.
because, well, if what sokka said was true, then it looks like hakoda’s a little bit into guys and a little bit in love with his best friend too.

I had a dream where The Gaang teaches Zuko the meaning of Christmas in a Modern AU but they still had bending and Appa was still a flying bison. I don’t remember what exactly happened in the dream, but by the end of it, Zuko and Katara *almost* kiss, and then they go “Lmao nah” And then Zuko’s just kinda sitting by hiself, and then Sokka comes over, and they talk, and then Aang airbends the mistletoe so it goes over their heads and they kiss.
Now, I don’t have the talent to fully write this, but I know someone does.

yes we absolutely can cherry pick what’s canon in the atla comics. for instance, imbalance and most of north and south can be canon, but the promise, the search, and smoke and shadow are not canon at all except for the information they provide about stuff that happened BEFORE atla. see? easy.

something i noticed while rewatching atla, whenever zuko is shown sleeping on his side (rather than his back), he always sleeps on his scar, so he can still hear while he's asleep. as far as i can recall, that's the only in-show proof that he's deaf in his left ear. and i love it.

AU where the war ends for (reasons), Fire Lord Azulon is still on the throne, and the Southern Water Tribe and the Fire Nation are struggling to broker a truce. So the Fire Nation decides that the best way to foster peace is with an arranged marriage.
Hakoda would never force any of his people to go through with this, so as the chief, he steps up and agrees to marry, no matter how much his heart still aches for Kya. Katara and Sokka are furious on their dad’s behalf, and agree to make things difficult for their future “”””step-parent”””
But Fire Lord Azulon has Ozai whispering in his ear, so the person he sends to the Southern Water Tribe is 16yo Prince Zuko. The least useful royal.
The Fire Nation ship arrives. No one had high hopes for this political marriage, but everyone is horrified when a terrified teenager steps onto the ice and introduces himself as Hakoda’s future spouse.
Zuko is quietly freaking out, but trying to hide it. Azula and other people at the palace have been whispering about how dangerous and violent and savage the Water Tribe Chief is. Hakoda seems polite, but he’s so much bigger than Zuko and the same age as his father, and Zuko has no choice but to marry him for the sake of his nation.
Except Hakoda isn’t having any of that. There’s no way he’s marrying a scared kid the same age as his son. The deal is off. How can he keep negotiating with the Fire Lord, who sent his terrified grandson to the other side of the world to marry a man twice his age?? No fucking way.
Cue Zuko being adopted into the Water Tribe family. And who knows, maybe Katara and Sokka will take Zuko out in a canoe to work off some steam, and they’ll accidentally discover a certain frozen monk that helps them bring about real peace.

(WORLDBUILDING - Same sex relationships are tolerated everywhere to different degrees, and always legal in marriage. However, circles of nobility were heteronormative, and there were homophobic individuals who existed)
Aang: Pan. Everyone including him thought he was straight, until they discussed the labels and Aang found that this label suited him more-while he knows he won’t love anyone but Katara, Katara’s gender and sex didn’t matter to him. He would also love boy or enby Katara.
Katara: Straight (because what kind of non cishet girl falls for Jet) and incredibly supportive of her friends and family.
Sokka: Bi with female pref and completely oblivious to him liking boys. Yes he did pull a lot of girls. No he did not realize being That Obsessed with the Boulder wasn’t something a straight guy would do. He thought he got sick when Zuko breathed fire.
Toph: Grey ace and Grey aromantic. I don’t want to put a solid aroace on her because she did like Sokka or it was implied (I care about canon just a little) but she didn’t seem to let it affect her-same goes for her relationships with Lin and Suyin’s biological dads.
Zuko: Bi with male pref. Made out with Jet on the Ba Sing Se ferry. Was weirdly obsessed with Sokka in a way he didn’t understand when he fully joined the gAang, especially since he still smiled subconsciously when he remembers his goth (ex?) gf.
Suki: Bi and knew she liked girls and boys but didn’t know the term. All she knew and cared was that she’s like Kyoshi, and it was an honor.
Azula: Ace lesbian but didn’t get in touch with that until her redemption (a redemption that she deserved) because Ozai thought love was weak and prided in her for not showing affection, essentially shutting down her homoromantic side. Never could explain why she liked Ty Lee over Mai.
Mai: Bi with female pref. She definitely liked Zuko, but not as much as Ty Lee when they were free from pre-redemption Azula. When Ty Lee chi-blocked Azula, she went from “I love Zuko more than I fear you” to “I love Ty Lee more than anything else in this world”.
Ty lee: Pansexual. When she realized Mai’s love language was standing up to her fear of Azula, she stood up to Azula. Not A Coincidence.
Jet: Either bi or one of those straight dudes who keep asking mlm to “mess around”. Kissed Zuko on the ba sing se ferry.
Smellerbee: not a sexuality but she’s trans. the one conversation with Iroh makes it basically canon. On her sexuality I’d say she’s wlw but never really had the chance to explore relationships or her attraction because being a Freedom Fighter is a Job That Takes A Lot Of Her Time.
Longshot: Aroace he’s literally an arrow ace
Haru: Trans dude and heterosexual (the combined Het was the reason why Toph thought he and Katara had a thing). He grew the mustache and is proud of it because to him it’s another way to affirm his masculinity.
Teo: Biromantic asexual i need to project i love this sunshine boy
Jin (the girl from ba sing se): Bi. idk how i know but i gotta say it
The duke: He’s like 8 so idk and he’s literally never met anyone his age
Yue: Panromantic asexual. the actual moon also my first gf turned into the moon
Hahn: Megahet. Huge het. big hetero
Chan and Ruon-Jian: Closeted mlm that pine for each other but don’t know it also weirdly homophobic and called Zuko “sus”
#also I do like Jet a lot and tbh hold some respect for the guy#so like... I'll just personally headcanon that he actually did like Zuko until he found out he was a firebender

Okay, I have to ask. Why do we keep saying Sokka canonically died young?
Sokka was canonically alive when Korra was born in 153 AG, and also lived long enough to protect her from the attempted kidnapping. So then i took a look at Sokka’s page on the avatar wiki, and
That means he died between age 74 and age 86. Or, even if you wanted to consider the possibility of Sokka dying at his youngest - the year Korra was born - that would be age 69.
He may not have lived to be ancient, but Sokka didn’t die young. He had plenty of time to live a full and happy life.
