It's one thing to argue that one specific interpretation of a character is better than canon. aka no I will not apologize for saying that many 2000s Naruto fics ended up being so much better than canon lol
The part that irks me the most is that in many cases, people start talking about "fanon" as in "one unique re-interpretation of the character", which- isn't the entire point of fanworks that people can have their own individual take on a piece of media?
Like I know this is just fun dunking on flanderization, but I find the way many fandoms develop one fanon that is considered the default or unique possible interpretation much more aggravating and off-putting.
“fanon is so much better then canon” bestie, you literally took a complex character with personality flaws and turned him into a living stereotype.

Sorry, but no.
The 4B movement "does not fight the patriarchy", it secedes from men altogether. (Men are intrinsically the problem, are evil intrinsically.) They are trying to build a project of a society without men. They are of course transphobic (demanding a picture to check that one is female, and one example is given of demanding a picture of a (lack of) Adam's apple.) They preach political lesbianism. They're at the point where they are debating whether it's okay to have male friends, or female friends who still fuck men! This is borderline cult behavior (isolating a member from all outsiders who might criticize the ideology.)
This is radfem ideology 101. TERFs would not "co-opt" this, this is their ideology already.
Like, from what little I know about sexism in Korea, Korean women deserve so much better, and Westerners ought to be critical about what kind of industries and criminal activities we / our fellow Westerners are supporting / exploiting (the Kpop industry and recent child sexual exploitation networks on the web scandals come to mind here). But the rhetoric described in this article is radical feminism. And it's kinda scary that nobody in the comments seems to pick that up, except for the TERFs themselves.

Now I'm retroactively so disappointed that prof Sycamore doesn't have a badass semi-truck full of cool pokemon-science-related models, two colleagues/assistants on the ground so he can have a fallout with one of them that will break the heart of all the kids decades later, a disembodied female "Little Voice" that contributes Knowledge and Sarcasm in equal measure, a mysterious truck driver whose face we never see, and an epic guitare riff theme.
Ok not to be really insufferable but I think the thing that’s often lost when people talk about the Pokédex is that it’s assumed it’s genuinely a tool for adults. Like the in game professors describe it as a “high tech encyclopaedia” and that’s taken at face value.
But in Japanese the word used is “図鑑” - “zukan”. This means “picture encyclopaedia”. But what the implication of this is is actually mostly stuff like this:
Tumblr media
Like the type of thing you read in primary school! Those big illustrated books that give kids introduction to just simple concepts of biology, or zoology. Full of fun facts that may not be 100% accurate but sure are cool! Not necessarily a robust resource for adults.
I’m not saying “zukan” is never used to refer to something a bit more high level. A little search around and I did find zukans that seemed targeted at older people, but honestly I noticed some of these had negative reviews like “there’s no furigana in this! This is too hard for my kid!”. So that to me suggests the connotation is very much like. Kids encyclopaedia.
So my point is when the Pokédex says bonkers stuff like:
Tumblr media
It’s more akin to children’s encyclopaedia publishing a “fun fact” that’s just like…could be theoretically true but only if you simplify a bunch of stuff.
Anyway my point is
a) the Pokédex is a resource specifically for grade-school age children
b) Professor Oak is one of those professors that at some point diverted most of his time into children’s science communication.

@chonaku-things you have been summoned as promised.
(Feel free to steal the meme too so I can spam you with all my problematic favs and poor not-so-little meow-meows in that story you talk about but never post :P )

What subject / topic do they know a lot about that’s completely useless to the direct plot?
How would they respond to being fired by a good boss?
What’s the worst gift they ever received? How did they respond?
What do they tell people they want? What do they actually want?
How do they respond when someone doesn’t believe them?

When do they feel the most guilt? How do they respond to it?
If they committed one petty crime / misdemeanor, what would it be? Why?
How do they greet someone they dislike / hate?
How do they greet someone they like / love?
What is the smallest, morally questionable choice they’ve made?
Who do they keep in their life for professional gain? Is it for malicious intent?
What’s a secret they haven’t told serious romantic partners and don’t plan to tell?

How do they respond to a loose handshake? What goes through their head?
What phrases, pronunciations, or mannerisms did they pick up from someone / somewhere else?
If invited to a TED Talk, what topic would they present on? What would the title of their presentation be?

What language would be easiest for them to learn? Why?
What’s something unimportant / frivolous that they hate passionately?
Are they a listener or a talker? If they’re a listener, what makes them talk? If they’re a talker, what makes them listen?
Who have they forgotten about that remembers them very well?
Who would they say ‘yes’ to if invited to do something they abhorred / strongly didn’t want to do?
Would they eat something they find gross to be polite?
What belief / moral / personality trait do they stand by that you (mun) personally don’t agree with?
What’s a phrase they say a lot?
Do they act on their immediate emotions, or do they wait for the facts before acting?
Who would / do they believe without question?
What’s their instinct in a fight / flight / freeze / fawn situation?
What’s something they’re expected to enjoy based on their hobbies / profession that they actually dislike / hate?
If they’re scared, who do they want comfort from? Does this answer change depending on the type of fear?

The other side of despair
Spoiler for chapter 945. POV Trafalgar Law. Basil Hawkins, mentions of Penguin, Shachi and Bepo. This bit started as part of a longer fic about Law and Kid and alliances and betrayals and Law's weird standards for liking people, but it got a bit longer than expected, so I don't know if I'll include it in the end. Mostly because I was trying to make sense of why the hell Law would surrender himself to Hawkins, when he can simply keep non-lethally slicing him until Hawkins can no longer transfer it??? Law's seen Hawkins' powers once already, he should have noticed that Hawkins switched patsies after the first one was cut in two.
Hawkins' powers are the kind Doflamingo would have slaughtered cities to get his hands on.
They allow the bastard to stand confidently in the open, right by the cell where he put your crew on display, bruised and bleeding. Calling to their captain, like decoy ducks in the cages around the lakes of northern islands during hunting season.
And of course, of course Hawkins knows to keep one hostage somewhere hidden. Even without the Ope-ope fruit's replacement abilities, it would be an obvious precautionary measure. Every two-bit crook would have known to do so. It just had to be Bepo. Good thing you never hope for things to go your way.
You remember reading about Hawkins' heists in the papers, back in North Blue. Penguin and Shachi had been impressed by the amount of booty Hawkins got away with, and how easy the stories made it sound. Bepo had chirped about the extremely low number of casualties, even with all the Marine propaganda, and hoped you all got to befriend the man one day.
You remember finally getting your hands on a copy of Hawkins' bounty, and pointing the word extorsion to your crew, before ordering them to watch their damn backs if they ever came across Hawkins. Too many discrepancies between the harm officially reported and the bounty on the man's name. Too much money on the table, too much silence - something wicked that way went.
Just because someone doesn't leave a mountain of corpses in their wake, doesn't mean they don't break people. There are so many more subtle and hygienic ways to skin a cat - you should know.
Hawkins knows how to make a threat, you'll give him that. There a major artery in the area he sliced on Shachi. Not that the bastard would need to know, when he can send every wound to his patsy of choice. Your fist clenches painfully around Kikoku's scabbard. Your teeth ache with the urge to slice Hawkins open, bowels out like a corpse for an autopsy.
You can almost feel the metaphorical wall at your back, like an old childhood toy, flooding your mind with long forgotten games. Old, numb, cold wrath. You breathe in. Out. Distal, middle, proximal phalanx. Pick up your mental notes from your fight six days ago. Metacarpus. Hawkins swapped patsies when you sliced the first in two. Triquetral, pisiform, lunate, scaphoid… Is there a limit to the number of wounds he can transfer? Capitate, hamate, trapezoid-
Hawkins raises his blade again, point moving towards his shoulder. You've unsheathed Kikoku before you even think, steel clashing against straw; you get a flash, the shadow of a tengai basket lifted from your head, and you let your nodachi bounce off Hawkins' treacherous viper of a weapon, push off it with all your strength so you can swirl and chop the thorn growing towards Hawkins' flesh into kindling.
Hawkins smirks. Radius, ulna, humerus, you are gonna rip this fucker apart, scapula, motherfucking clavicle, Shachi screams at you not to worry about them, and Hawkins' grin widens.
"All I have to do is stab myself. Your men will take all the pain for me. Unless you surrender."
There. Hawkins' insistence on capturing you, there's the nerve.
"I'm going to open you up like a frog," you tell him, "if I have to cut those three first, so be it." Hawkins frowns. "You are not the type to slay your own, Trafalgar." You take a step forward. Hawkins flinches. Then he catches himself, regrows his sword, arches it closer to his torso- In one leap, you're on him, bisecting the thorn from the tip down to barely an inch from the guard. As you twist Kikoku to deviate Hawkins' sword far away from any vulnerable body parts, you bend over him, cheeks brushing as you whisper: "And if I can't kill you then I'll slit my own throat. Wanna report that failure to Kaido, Hawkins-ya?"
You sidestep Hawkins' next attack and ready your nodachi.
"You wouldn't." The haunted look on Hawkins' face is one you've seen many many times, and you don't need Doflamingo's echo to remind you of what it means. You lick the corner of your lips, taste the fear in the air, and you laugh.
You place Kikoku at your own throat, press it ever so lightly before pointing it at Hawkins again. "Let those three go, or find out."

Since this is an endurance game of youtube figuring out a way to bypass ublock then ublock figuring out a way to bypass youtube again, there will be periods when youtube's nasty little blocking screen will plague you again. When that happens check out ublock origins' reddit, they have a topic dedicated to the youtube issue, where they give other ways to bypass that cursed screen (like getting the link to the embedded version of a video).
If all else fails, remember that there are plenty of websites out there that will let you download a video, and so far they seem unaffected by the anti-addblock debacle. If it's a video you plan on watching more than once, this is probably a more environment-friendly solution, too, so don't let anyone guilt you out of doing it ("small creators" discourse is horseshit supporting the business of big corpos like google most of the time - there are plenty of better ways to support an artist than youtube's add nonsense).
Here's uBlock Origin's official guide to bypassing youtube's anti-adblock popups, updated weekly. Please share widely. Don't reward google for their predatory anti-consumer bullshit
To summarize: 1. Get uBlock Origin and make sure it's updated to the latest version. 2. Click on the gear icon to get to the dashboard, go to "Filter lists", and make sure that "uBlock filters - Quick fixes" is up to date
Repeat those steps any time you get another popup (google and uBlock are having an arms race right now so it might stop working at any moment), and if you have any more problems, read the reddit thread for troubleshooting advice

"I had reached the age of six hundred and fifty miles", Inverted World, Christopher Priest.
Honestly this list leans way more towards "funny" than "captivating" IMO.
I based these on the quotes most mentioned in the notes of that post. since the original vote was held by 2000 ppl on Amazon books

HEADCANON RANT FOR A SERIES I HAVEN'T BEEN INTO IN TEN YEARS (I HATE YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS CHONA)
Still confused by the "Ino is mean" part like this girl is the most alpha mamma dog of all alpha dogs in this series, protecting the bullied at the tender age of seven, giving Sakura the pissing contest thing because Sakura declared she wanted it, legit being happy that the ungrateful idiot has grown so strong, she whacks Shikamaru on the head because let's face it the blasé little sexist shit deserves it and you would do the same if he was your friend IRL, and that scene where she brings Chouji a basket of fruits in the hospital is sweet as fuck (yes a girl visits him + she takes into account that he likes to snack AND takes into account what is actually healthy for him by bringing him something better than fucking chips to snack on). You know that if a girl/anyone broke one of those boys' heart there would be blood and she would be asking Sakura to bring a shovel lol.
I agree on her not being the medic though. Shikamaru's family are basically pharmacists for fuck's sake! Also this guy is not cut to be a leader, and the whole "he's a genius so he becomes boss" infuriates me. Like listen I have a couple male or socialized-as-male real life high HQ friends, plus a very undesirable shitty ex-colleague, and let me tell you social skills, specifically understanding people and displaying some fucking tact or humility, are not their strong point. And Shikamaru displays a personality that is very much in line with that experience. He would be a nightmare of a team leader, absolutely terrible. And he wouldn't even like the job. Imagine your manager being a callous rude little didkhead and complaining about his position all day! Being a good strategist =/= being a good leader. Leadership is about people management, and Shikamaru is pretty shitty at anything emotional, which should disqualify him immediately. Ino should have been the leader. She has the temper for it and actually wants and likes the responsibility, it comes naturally for her. Plus she actually has some people skills - I would say way above average. Don't let the pissing contest or Kishimoto's heinously sexist way of depicting teenage girls and romance fool you this girl has more maturity than most of her promotion. There's a reason why Sakura asks for Ino's advice when they take time to sit down pre-shipuuden - because despite the pissing contest Sakura is smart and trusts Ino's empathy skills.
Nobody should trust Chouji with medical knowledge he might use it for more dangerous drugs, should have been a recurring joke (and not-quite-a-joke) in their team.
/My former Team 10 obsession is showing lol
Shino is an interesting suggestion! I didn't think of him, but you make a lot of sense here. Though my brain immediately went "Kiba would definitely turn this into a pissing contest" so my take is as soon as Shino gets into medical training Kiba gets into medic lessons with his sister (it's even more hilarious if he can't make it into the official medic classes but stubborns his way into learning anyway because he is not about to let Shino show him up again damnit!) + insert Kiba sulking every time Shino patches him up AND beaming with pride the day his vet skills save Shino's precious hive and Shino quietly thanks him for it.
BWAHAHA YES NEJI. OMG he would haaaaate medic lessons. Like this boy is amazing at handling chakra so you would think he'd ace this, but nope, he has like no patience and no chill, he loathes it, he finds every patient who so much as opens their mouth incredibly annoying and he has to restrain himself from hitting them because then they would have even more damage and he'd waste more time and chakra patching them up. This is his sacerdoce and he suffers through every second of it. Also now he has to tell Lee not to take this as an excuse to be even more reckless, because his medical skills are not miracle-level, damnit, so stop getting yourself torn apart Lee or he'll put you out of your misery and stupidity once and for all instead of fixing you! (He lies. He keeps patching Lee up and glaring and threatening while Tenten whacks the idiot on the head. Lee finds Neji's help more disturbing than the threats.)
Re-the sand siblings: Kankurô would be very knowledgeable about poisons and antidotes and pharmacopea to an extent, yes. But the one who would be most interested in medical skills would be Gaara IMO. Ninja skills for something else than hurting people! Sadly he has very little time to study medical lessons, and at least at the beginning the patients are scared of him so healers don't want him in the hospital. Also after experiencing wounds and pain again, he has issues with blood - not quite Tsunade levels, but when he gets upset the sand gets agitated so it's difficult to convince people to let him near them. He mostly studies medical skills with books or on his own.
frankly i think choji should probably have been the medic ninja of team ten. like ino is so mean and i dont think she cares to learn too deeply about healing people the bitch loves to beat people up too much and definitely not in the same way as sakura. i think choji would genuinely get enjoyment out being able to help heal people.

Plot twist ASTRAGOR THE BOOK BURNER is not even the true bad guy, the protagonists almost kinda like him because he somehow ends up burning more shitty customers than books.
I don't think I could ever be a professional story editor, because for every plot I would just be like "Your story needs a bad guy. Oh, it's a sweet slice-of-life about two cute people working in a library? Well now it has ASTRAGOR THE BOOKBURNER and he's here to fuck up the library and test the strength of their love"

Some people in the comments are like "doing these jokes about strangers is invasive it's different from doing them with your friends" and, as someone cis who has trans friends: DO NOT PRESUME TO MAKE THESE KIND OF JOKES ABOUT YOUR CIS FRIENDS, THANK YOU, BYE.
I don't like to talk about this online because the hordes are always waiting to twist and strawman anything that doesn't go exactly their way, but gender CAN be a touchy topic for cis people for a variety of reasons, none of which are any of your business or owed to you or something you are free to press on without being a shitgibbon just because you're trans.
calling every gnc cis person you see an "egg waiting to crack" even as a joke is not cool or funny at all actually it is extremely invasive and weird and you are just reinventing gender roles but making it "progressive"

OK so I went to check the CNRTL's dictionary. It's here, in case you want to use it later, it's a dictionary made from a compilation of sources gathered by public researchers (the CNRTL portal is affiliated to the CNRS). It's particularly useful to figure out the origins of a word or to date it, because at the bottom of each entry they list the earliest dated examples of the word in their corpus. Anyway.
According to the CNRTL's dictionary, bougnat has two distinct meanings. It means either a coal seller or the owner of a coffee shop.
More interestingly, they give the etymology of the word: "bougnat" is a shortening of "charbougnat", an imitation/butchering by Parisians of the Auvergnat regional language (from the region of Auvergne, remember that up until the generation of my great-grandparents, who fought in WWII, regional languages were a (dying) thing in all corners of France, not just Britony/Basque country or Corsica and the few we are still aware of / acknowledge as languages instead of scorning them as "patois") mixed with "charbon" (coal). The source for this explanation is G. Macé, Mes lundis en prison, dated 1889. The quote says the word means "soit des logeurs, marchands de charbons, cafetiers [...] ou autres commerçants qui semblent natifs de l'Auvergne" (either landlords, coal sellers, coffeeshop owners [...] or other shopkeepers who seem Auvergne-born".) So basically this word was used in an extremely similar way to "arabe" in modern French slang: we often say we're going to "l'épicerie arabe" (or even "le rebeu" in verlan), meaning the corner store, because in large French cities, a lot of corner stores are owned by people of Maghrebi descent (formerly called "Arabes" in slang, though outside of the corner store thing, you might want to be careful about calling a Maghrebi person that if you're white, because it's... often used in a racist context. The verlan equivalent, "rebeu", has different connotations, because verlan is used by poor people, including a lot of people of Maghrebi descent).
le robert de poche: bougnat n. m. fam. et vieilli Marchand de charbon (qui tenait souvent un café)
me: somebody who sells coal...and drinks a lot of coffee? someone who sells coal while holding coffee? why would this be a thing, france?
wordreference french-to-english dictionary: bougnat nm argot, vieilli (vendeur de charbon et de boissons) (historical) coalman and barkeeper n
me: ...why would this be a thing, france??

This. As someone who studied English in uni and didn't even go further into translating, and now writes fanfic or TTRPG settings as a hobby, Tolkien's language worldbuilding makes perfect sense to me.
When you write, you naturally develop parts that you are knowledgeable in and care about. Of course a linguist would deep-dive into developing the languages of their setting! Duh! Nobody would be surprised by a medical doctor being extra about anatomy and wounds and medical techniques in their books, or by a biologist developing the anatomy of sci-fi creatures way beyond what the average joe does. Why are we so ~impressed~ about Tolkien putting his linguistic knowledge in his books?
One of the ballsiest things Tolkien ever did was write 473k words about some hobbits called frodo, sam, merry, and pippin and then write in the appendices that their names are actually maura, ban, kali, and razal.

Also, if all else fails, Chessex, a company well known for manufacturing dice, has an online store with a link called "custom engraved dice". I'm pretty sure they could accommodate your friend's exact needs, since what you're looking for would just amount to a mismatched set of specific color combinations from their catalogue (the company has a lot of color options for polyhedral sets, a lot of which have a plain opaque or transparent color background, and contrasting numbers).
And where I live, actual game stores (including board-games stores) sell dices by the unit. You can rummage through a big bowl and pick each dice individually, and you could probably find some that suit your friend's needs there. Might be worth calling stores in your area to see if they sell dice that way, if going in person is an option for either of you.
Hey, asking for a friend, has anyone got links/recs for DND dice made in mind for dyslexic people?
We've found some character sheets but nothing for dice, and it's a real stone in the path.
