Do you have any advice for getting back into the writing spirit?? I want to write, but I just can't seem to...
Hey, sweetheart!
Writers block is the worst.
It can be difficult to get back into the “writing spirit”, especially if a lot of time has lapsed. There are moments where writing seems like a chore and that is absolutely no fun.
Everyone is different in their approach to this problem, but here are some things that have helped me:
A writing app
Something that you can open up on your phone at a moment’s notice when inspiration strikes you. It is easier to have something that usually is on hand, such as your phone, when you want to write. Writing flow, especially when the muse is gone, tends to come and go and having something readily available helps with that.
I use the app Evernote. It can be downloaded on your phone for free and also opened up on your laptop. I have had this app for almost 5 years now, and while not perfect, makes it easy to have anything in one place. I love having it because inspiration tends to hit when I least expect it to, so having the means to jot down the idea or write out the scene in picturing is wonderful. And, trust me, write down the idea when you have it - you will not remember later on.
Think about the block
Taking a moment to step back and evaluate your feelings can be extremely beneficial. How does it feel when you write? Does the block only occur for a certain character/fandom? Is the issue something bigger?
Being able to pinpoint a specific problem will help, but sometimes there just isn’t one. And, that’s where a lot of the frustration lies.
When I started this blog it was The Outsiders centered and I loved running it! Until my muse died for it…I didn’t want to write for it anymore, but instead for other fandoms. I made the decision to make this a multi-fandom blog and it was a choice made for the better. I still write for the Outsiders on occasion, if my muse is there, and still participate in the fandom. Sometimes the labels we put on ourselves limits our creativity.
Do Something Else
It might seem counterproductive, but sometimes taking a moment to do something else - such as painting, reading, walking - can get the creative juices flowing. Getting something done, while not the original objective of writing, can help towards that direction.
Music
Music is something that inspires and motivates me. It has helped me write an idea for a fic, brought me out of a slump, or even set the tone for a story. It works wonders and sometimes, just taking a moment to discover new songs is enough to get me writing. Nothing wrong with falling back to the same 5 songs you repeat daily ;)
And the dreaded…write
It can be awful to write when the words won’t come, but sitting idle won’t do anything. When it comes to fics, there are some requests that just don’t inspire you and it’s okay. It happens. To everyone.
Maybe taking a step back from fanfic writing will help. Try writing for a prompt. I follow a ton of journal/prompt type blogs and occasionally see a prompt that inspires me to write. The words will flow and no one will ever read what I wrote, only me. And, that’s fine with me because I wrote something for me, myself, and I. We, as writers, sometimes forget to write for ourselves.
Maybe you’re reading this and thinking that it won’t help you, or you’ve tried this and it still doesn’t work - and I leave with this:
take time for yourself.
Forcing yourself to write will only crush the happiness that accompanies writing and will draw you further away. So, don’t force it. Wait. And, then go back to it and be proud of the results - no matter how shitty you think it might be. You wrote something and that is enough.

Steve x Evie
“Remember that day in the park? The first time we met? Well, officially anyway.” Steve said to Evie as they lay in her room, an Elvis record playing in the background.
Evie chuckled and smiled, nodding a bit at the memory. “I remember. Sandy was the one that encouraged me to talk to ya, I made her come with me to talk to Soda.” She said and chuckled. Steve wrapped his arms around Evie, smiling as he thought of that wonderful day…
Steve and Evie had met one Saturday afternoon as they played at the park. Steve had seen Evie around, and she had instantly caught his eye. He thought she was the most beautiful six-year old he’d ever seen at the park, though he’d never actually spoken to her. Whenever Mrs. Randle or Mrs. Curtis brought the two boys to the park, Steve always hoped he see Evie there.
Currently, Steve was playing in the sandbox with his best buddy, Sodapop, and Evie was on the swings with Sandy. Evie saw the two boys in the sandbox and decided to head over to them with Sandy. “Hey y’all! I’m Sandy and this is my friend Evie!” Sandy introduced and smiled brightly at them, especially Soda. “I’m Sodapop, and yes that’s my real name. At least that’s what mom and dad say!” Soda said proudly and smiled at them. “And this is my bestest buddy, Steve.” He said. “Nice to meet y’all! We were wondering if we could play?” Evie asked and smiled. “Of course!” Steve said as the girls sat in the sandbox, joining in on the castle they were trying to build.
From that day on, the four of them were practically inseparable. They met every Saturday to play at the park, often playing in the sand or swinging on the swings. Some days, the boys would chase the two young girls around the park for fun and every once in awhile, the girls would chase the boys.
Steve looked down at Evie, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. “Well I’m glad Sandy made ya talk to us. I’d seen you around so much, but I never had the courage to talk to such a pretty gal.” He said and chuckled
Evie blushed softly and shook her head a bit at her boyfriend. “I love you Steve.”
“And I love you Evie.” Steve said as they slowly fell asleep.
