PROLOGUE.

word count: 870.

there were certain things you avoided talking about, mindful of their potential gravity. among these was the enigma that had kept you single for twenty two years—sure, there were situationships here and there, but these only served to highlight the loneliness looming in your future. you tried not to dwell on it too much, believing that fate would bring someone into your life when you were emotionally ready.

however, despite your efforts to downplay the weight of being single while all your friends easily found their soulmates, sixty-year-old women pushed their available grandsons onto you. maybe it was the wedding atmosphere that prompted yunjin's grandmother to hassle you for nearly half an hour about the importance of finding a husband before the age of twenty-five, but regardless of what was influencing her to do so, you just wanted her to shut up.

"he's adorable! give it a shot. a lovely girl like yourself shouldn't be flying solo," she chirped, her smile bright for someone embarrassing you in front of everyone. a chuckle rang in your ears, and you were far too accustomed to that sound not to recognize it as sunghoon's.

you shot him a disapproving look, yet he maintained his smug smile without batting an eye. son of a whore. park sunghoon was the type of guy you used to avoid, but the romance between your best friends had thrust him into your life more than you'd prefer.

it was surprising to know that someone like jay was friends with someone like him, although yunjin failed to see any difference between them. nevertheless, your view of sunghoon wasn't merely baseless disdain; there were specific events that led you to that conclusion.

during the first year of high school, he caught you spilling melted chocolate on the back of your pants and wasted no time in spreading to everyone that you had an accident. "it was just a joke!" he claimed when confronted. people called you shitty pants for months until the 'joke' wasn't funny anymore.

the following year, yunjin and jay started a thing, and sunghoon vowed to reconcile with you, all for the sake of your friend's love. unfortunately, despite the peace agreement, the gossip about you continued, like when he told classmates about the awkward kiss you shared with soobin at your seventeenth birthday party. he had overheard your conversation with yunjin about it and found it hilarious that the school prince was a bad kisser. soobin never looked at you the same way again.

after graduation, you wanted to cut ties with yunjin because her harmless relationship with jay was becoming too serious, which meant more time with sunghoon. but suddenly, the teasing stopped.

sunghoon shed his childish and bothersome personality, adopting a different demeanor. the teasing stopped, but sunghoon was still a jerk. so, you realized that no matter what phase he went through or how hard your friends tried to patch things up, you would always hate him.

considering all this, who would've thought that at the end of yunjin and jay's engagement dinner, you would be completely drunk in sunghoon's arms, pouring out all the frustrations of your unrequited love?

blame it on the seven glasses of wine.

"i really, really like him, you know?" you sobbed, your voice slurred, and your face all gross with a runny nose. "but he'll never want anything with a girl like me — which is understandable because i'm a huge mess!"

"yeah... i'm sorry to hear that," sunghoon sighed, dragging out the words due to his lack of interest in what was happening. he was supposed to be downstairs with the others, celebrating his best friend's engagement, but he ended up stumbling upon your drunken, collapsed body in the way to the bathroom, and he couldn't leave you stranded. yunjin would never forgive him. "but i'm sure you'll get over it."

he gave your shoulder a light pat, and you glanced at him with frowning eyebrows. "do you think i can win him over? i know you guys are friends. has he ever mentioned me?"

sunghoon almost chuckled at your words but stifled the amusement in his throat. "you must be getting me mixed up with someone else, 'cause i was never his friend. actually, i'm surprised you like that goofball."

you scoffed. "how could you say that?!" your hand shoved his shoulder away, and he grumbled at the sudden gesture. "just so you know, juyeon is superior to you in every aspect. he's handsome, cool, kind, funny, handsome... oh god! he's so handsome!" your voice began to rise, and sunghoon tried to shush you, wary that it might draw attention. "lee juyeon is the most stunning man to ever grace the earth! i need to marry him. like, right now." you attempted to get up.

"shut your mouth before someone hears you!" he yelled-whisper, pushing you back to the floor. "and drink your goddamn water."

"no! he needs to know that we are meant to be together." you spat out the words, literally spat it out. droplets of saliva fell on his face as he tried his best not to freak out about it. "lee juyeon needs to know that i'm in lo-"

your desperate shout was cut off by sunghoon's lips.

soft, and at the same time, aggressive.

he didn't do it out of love, but because juyeon himself was standing just a few meters away from you, holding a drink in one hand while having an arm wrapped around of yunjin's cousin.

you both stood frozen for a moment, lips locked. sunghoon held the side of your neck, keeping you close, though you made no effort to break away. when juyeon realized that it wasn't the ideal place to be with his girl, he swiftly retreated, while sunghoon didn't wait for the former classmate to disappear before pulling away from you.

"tomorrow you might hate me even more than you do now," he said. "but i just saved your ass."
