How to explain to people that you're not offended by something they think you should be?
I've been fat basically my whole life yet I don't see Despair of the Endless being portrayed as a fat woman as fatphobic. The mere presence of a fat character in a piece of media (even if they are the only fat character, which Despair is not) is not fatphobic. If you think so, you have internalized fatphobia and you should do something about that. Fatphobia is how the fat character is treated, and no one treats Despair badly because of her weight.
I have to wonder if the people saying Despair makes The Sandman fatphobic have even read the comics. That version of Despair is naked, her skin is gray, and she sometimes has tusks. A normal-looking, fully-dressed Despair on the show is a vast improvement -- I would have hated reading rude comments about Donna Preston's naked body.
Do I think Despair looks like me? We're both make-up free and wear comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes, but she's not human and I don't maul my own face with a hook.
Also, and this probably the most important thing, Neil's Endless are responsible for two contrary things. For Despair, she has despair and hope.
Hope is a fat, frumpy woman.
How is that fatphobic?
