Happy 2024 Fic Challenge!

@jandjsalmon and I are here with the new fic reading challenge for 2024! Heck yeah! Jandy did most of the work this year, I'll be honest, and the new challenge looks great!

For the uninitiated, basically there's a bunch of tasks to complete as you read fanfiction over the year. For example, read x number of authors, read a new ship, read a fic with x in the title, etc.! It can be a fun way to challenge yourself, or to help you read more, or to discover new things you might never have tried!

But here, without further ado...

2024 Fic Reading Challenge spreadsheet

Remember that for any of these spreadsheets, you need to 'make a copy' for your own use. Otherwise you won't be able to edit anything!

We have a pinned post with all the important links, but I'll include a couple here for ease of access.

We have a Discord!

We also have completion badges every year, and here are last year's as an example. (They are adorable.)

And, of course, there are rules (with a helpful FAQ).

Anyone is welcome to join, even if you don't hang out with us in the Discord! And the whole challenge is done on the honour system. You say you completed Extreme Mode? I ain't checking that out! :P

I am so burnt out after whumptober i havent written a single line since then hopefully it goes away beofr whumpmuss anyway i cant wait for nxt year whumptober already

Wait, so we can write and post to the AO3 collection even if it's been a long while? For example, if I wanted to do one of the earlier years whumptober –2018, 2019... I could do them now and still post them in the collection?

There's not actually a specific subcollection for 2018 or 2019, but you're welcome to add to the Whumptober parent collection anytime!

We just wanted to send one more huge thank you to everyone for helping us make our first year as Whumptober mods a success!

Hundreds of you participated and 207 of you were recognized as completionists, including*:

*please note, some of our completionists used multiple types of media to complete the challenge!

The AO3 collection currently has 6263 works from 943 fandoms. That's 797 more works than last year!

We had an amazing time and we're so glad for the opportunity to run this whumptastic event. We're going to shutter the house for the season now, but we're still around to answer asks and moderate the Discord. Remember that the AO3 collection will remain open, and you can add to it year-round, whenever you find yourself filling a prompt from the 2023 list.

Generally prompts go out at the end of August giving participants 4+ weeks to prepare. However, we’ll be back towards the end of July next year where we’ll have a better idea of the timeframe for whumptober 2024.
