A better, more positive Tumblr

Since its founding in 2007, Tumblr has always been a place for wide open, creative self-expression at the heart of community and culture. To borrow from our founder David Karp, we’re proud to have inspired a generation of artists, writers, creators, curators, and crusaders to redefine our culture and to help empower individuality.

Over the past several months, and inspired by our storied past, we’ve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward and have been hard at work laying the foundation for a better Tumblr. We’ve realized that in order to continue to fulfill our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change. Some of that change began with fostering more constructive dialogue among our community members. Today, we’re taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions).  

Let’s first be unequivocal about something that should not be confused with today’s policy change: posting anything that is harmful to minors, including child pornography, is abhorrent and has no place in our community. We’ve always had and always will have a zero tolerance policy for this type of content. To this end, we continuously invest in the enforcement of this policy, including industry-standard machine monitoring, a growing team of human moderators, and user tools that make it easy to report abuse. We also closely partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Internet Watch Foundation, two invaluable organizations at the forefront of protecting our children from abuse, and through these partnerships we report violations of this policy to law enforcement authorities. We can never prevent all bad actors from attempting to abuse our platform, but we make it our highest priority to keep the community as safe as possible.

So what is changing?

Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and we’ve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.

Why are we doing this?

It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets. We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.

Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.

So what’s next?

Starting December 17, 2018, we will begin enforcing this new policy. Community members with content that is no longer permitted on Tumblr will get a heads up from us in advance and steps they can take to appeal or preserve their content outside the community if they so choose. All changes won’t happen overnight as something of this complexity takes time.

Another thing, filtering this type of content versus say, a political protest with nudity or the statue of David, is not simple at scale. We’re relying on automated tools to identify adult content and humans to help train and keep our systems in check. We know there will be mistakes, but we’ve done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community.

Most importantly, we’re going to be as transparent as possible with you about the decisions we’re making and resources available to you, including more detailed information, product enhancements, and more content moderators to interface directly with the community and content.

Like you, we love Tumblr and what it’s come to mean for millions of people around the world. Our actions are out of love and hope for our community. We won’t always get this right, especially in the beginning, but we are determined to make your experience a positive one.

I was in women’s studies the other day and said “savage, dude” to someone and this (white) girl in front of me immediately turns around and glares at me saying that savage is a microagression and that I shouldn’t say it and I’m like..........what??

When has the context of the word “savage” ever referred to as some sort of racism since like the 1400s???? Since when is meme slang a microaggression??????? So I was kinda like ok no it’s not and there’s way bigger issues to worry about girl broaden your lens a little bit here.

YALL the next day I shit you not the professor comes in and starts lecturing about microaggressions. This bitch went to the professor and tattled on me and the professor didn’t even ask for my side of the details before lecturing. And half the class heard what I said bc we’re in a confined space so they all KNEW it was about me and it was fucking stupid and humiliating for something THAT ISNT EVEN OPPRESSIVE. IT’S NOT. THIS WHOLE FUCKING WEBSITE SAYS SAVAGE. I EVEN LOOKED IT UP AND DIDNT FIND A SINGLE REFERENCE TO IT BEING A MICROAGGRESSION. WTF

My professor literally did the ONE THING that people try to slam radical feminists on: not looking at all sides and contexts of a situation before immediately criticizing it. I had mad respect for this professor and now I’m just annoyed and embarrassed to even say anything in class anymore.........

So now I’m buying a hoodie that says “cute but savage” on it and am gonna wear it to present my final project because I graduate in a few weeks so I’m gonna right petty with petty and then peace tf out.

Okay so I know I’m gonna get flack about this but I have some opinions on Show Negan. 

First thing. Show Negan is Show Negan. He is darker than comic Negan because that’s just the tone that they’ve decided to set with him. He’s not going to be as loud and obnoxious and comfortable in the cell as Comic Negan. 

Second thing. Without Carl, Show Negan has to have his time with other people. Carl in the Comics was a regular ish visitor for Negan that probably helped him cope. it’s been established in the show that other people show up to feed him and Rick is the only one to talk to him. While Rick and Negan play off each other well, keep in mind that Negan also doesn’t talk a lot because he is pouting. He lost. He’s licking his wounds. Rick is bragging. It hurts to have the guy that almost killed you humble you like this. 

Third thing. Negan isn’t a liar, but he is manipulative. He had a point about being the same as Michonne (and the same as Rick) because they’ve delt with their grief by channeling it into growth of their communities and senseless violence (albeit Negan did it more with people while Michonne uses walkers. Rick would also go on these stints where he lashed out against people and walkers. Think of Post-Lori’s death. think of when Carl lost his eye. Think Post-Carl’s death). But the main difference is that Michonne has other things to live for beside herself. We’ve seen how she is when she’s alone and she doesn’t do well. Negan doesn’t have anyone anymore, which is why he’s asking for the bat. it’s his emotional crutch. 

Fourth thing. Yes, Negan and Rick should have had that kinda conversation instead of Negan and Michonne but since Rick is leaving, there needs to be someone who will pick up that mantle of wanting to keep Negan alive and trying to see to it that he’s human again. 

Fifth thing. Negan hurting himself like that makes sense. It’s terrible, but he’s not doing it just because he wants to suffer. He’s doing it so that they have to give him medical attention. It’s a chance to escape to get to lucille. He doesn’t want to get out to take over (his line about getting the world ready for him was most likely just him pushing Rick’s buttons because there is no way he could so seamlessly take over again without people killing him). He wants to hurt himself because he knows that he can get what he wants that way. Negan’s been in isolation so long too that you know it’s no wonder he is the way he is, and I’m sorry for him. He’s touch starved (he holds himself, crosses his arms defensively), he’s got nothing to do (he’s thinking of ways to get lucille, he just wants someone to talk to), and even though his hair is kept short, his beard is kept long probably because he’s ashamed about the scar from where Rick slit his throat. 

tldr: Show Negan is his own person and he’s more realistic and therefore less humorous and I support the motherfucker
