aoex ficlet (bonrin) // bon's having a shit day.

Bon had been unsuccessfully trying to inject a new Verse into his brain for a full three hours when the dorm room opens and there's a commotion loud enough to break through his noise-cancelling headphones.

He screws his eyes shut, breathing in deep. He hasn't eaten all day. He hasn't spoken to anyone. Because he knows the moment he does, he'll blow up at them. He doesn't want to be angry at his friends. It's not their fault he woke up in a shit mood.

"---Bon, Bon!"

Someone taps his headphones. Bon scowls, turning. He pauses. Okumura Rin blinks down at him, looking as bewildered as Bon feels. "What," Bon says, and then has to clear his throat, "what are you doing here?"

Rin shrugs. He looks over his shoulder at where Konekomaru and Shima are doing terrible jobs of pretending to be busy. "They dragged me here, said you needed a break."

"I don't," Bon says through gritted teeth.

"You sure, buddy? 'Cause the vein pulsing on your forehead says differently."

Bon grips his pencil so hard, it snaps in two. Everyone in the room stares.

"Okay," Rin says. He tugs the broken halves of the pencil out of Bon's hand. "Come on."

"What?"

"Come with me. Our place is out of groceries. I've got a hall pass from Mephisto and everything. You can be an extra chaperone."

Because his day really has been awful, for no reason other than it just is, simmering under his skin all day, Bon leaves his books and follows. Rin's already talking up a storm by himself, listing out ingredients and musing about sales. Bon barely notices his friends high-fiving as the door closes.

"Hey," Rin says, as they're waiting for the bus. "Since you're going to be carrying at least half the groceries for me, what do you want to eat? I'll cook."

And Bon, for the first time that day, feels his stomach start to rumble. He shrugs. "I'll eat anything you make."

A grin stretches across Rin's face. Something loosens in Bon's chest. He looks back out onto the road. Takes a deep breath in. Lets it out slowly. Lets himself look forward to sorting through the vegetables in the spacious kitchen of the old dorms, to sitting down across from Rin and digging into something homemade and piping hot.
