You might have noticed this lighthouse in Dyrhólaey. The very first lighthouse in Dyrhólaey was built in 1910. The present one was built in 1927 and was quite a large construction. The building materials were pulled up onto the headland along a cable from the shore.

Fire Sunset - Reynisdrangar at Vík, Iceland (by orvaratli)
Reynisdrangar are giant pillars of rock, as high as 66 meters, that rise out of the sea to the south of Reynisfjall and are well visible from Vík. Like many similar phenomena the pillars are explained in folklore as the remains of giants who were caught by the sun at dawn and turned to stone.

The groyne next to Víkurá River was built in the year 2011 to prevent further erosion of the Vík beach. After the volcano eruption in Katla 1918 the coastline by Vík accreted about 500 to 600 m, until 1971. From then the coastline has erode about 350-450 m and is today about the same as it was prior the eruption. A part of the town is close to the today’s coastline and a solution for the erosion is needed.
