Jannik is set to play four clay events in this stretch of the season – the same number as he did last year, although hopefully with more successful results. Switching out playing Barcelona for Madrid (he was forced to withdraw from Madrid last year after withdrawing due to illness at Barcelona) means he is forfeiting defense of the 90 points he gained there. Surely, however, his focus will be on improving his results specifically at Rome and Roland Garros where he suffered early losses in ‘23. His opportunity total is 5000 points with him only needing to defend 495 points to maintain his ranking of men’s world no. 2. Whether or not Jannik will walk away from Paris with the men’s no. 1 ranking remains to be seen.

Given the strength of her ‘23 results — two titles, including Roland Garros, runner-up at Madrid, and quarterfinals at Rome — she must defend 3335 points to maintain her hold on the women’s world no. 1 ranking, making her the player to beat. Obviously.

**Last year, WTA 500 tournaments awarded their champions 470 points. This year, they will award their champions 500 points. That means that while Iga has 470 points to defend as the Stuttgart '23 champion, if she does win again, she would actually both defend and improve upon her '23 result. Because tennis.
