Thinking about how the whole second half of Kate Bushâs Hounds of Love album is a conceptual narrative (called The Ninth Wave) about a woman lost at sea fighting to survive and how she has to keep herself awake. And how she wishes she had her radio to âtune into some friendly voicesâ in order to not fall asleep and how thereâs all these people trying to tell her to wake up and how, as some kind of spirit, she watches all her friends and family but they canât hear her. And how her own future self comes to visit her to tell her not to give upâŠ
And all thatâŠjust strikes me as a little too coincidental.

can you believe that we have fanfiction. that we have websites dedicated to fanfiction. that there is a place that you can go and read tens, hundreds, thousands and thousands of pieces of writing that strangers have made. people who are not "writers". people who come home at the end of the day and have feelings and say, i am going to put that into words. i am going to share those words. short, long, sweet, sad, horny, funny, wonderful words. we are all just human and we all love to make and remake and share that with others. can you believe that.

Being a Steddie fan is like...I have extremely strong and specific opinions about half a dozen or so Stranger Things side characters. Most of these characters have no more than a handful of scenes between them. Some of them don't even have names.

Years after Eddie moves out and Wayne retires, Eddie comes by everyday to help around the house. Wayne doesnât like the fuss, he wonât be a burden, but the company is nice. The new place isn't as homey as the trailer, his memory's fuzzy about why he ever moved.
One day, Eddie shows up with the Harrington boy of all people. Not a boy anymore, a man fully grown but Wayne remembers him driving that shiny Beamer around Hawkins like yesterday. Eddie says they're old pals, but Wayne can't recall Steve ever coming around with any of Eddie's friends.
It's an odd pair, but Steveâs good company. He chats about baseball, doesn't mind when Wayne mixes up last night's scores with a game 20 years ago. Then throughout the day, Wayne catches Steve giving Eddie the kind of looks and touches that make it clear what kind of pals they are, or at least what kind Steve wants them to be.
It warms Wayne's heart to see. Heâs not gonna be around forever, and he always wanted Eddie to settle down with someone. It's hard for men like Eddie, for men like them, but he doesn't want that to stop Eddie from having the chance. So that night before they go, when Wayne's getting squared away in bed, he whispers to Eddie, "Steve's a good one, son. If you ever get ahold of him, don't you let him go."
Eddie just grins, almost something sad about it, and says, "Okay, old man. I'll keep him. I promise." The same thing he always says, every time this happens, but Wayne doesn't know that.
Every day is different, but sometimes Wayne remembers Eddie and Steve have been together for a decade. Sometimes he remembers the small backyard wedding, laughs about how it rained and Eddie slipped in the mud. Sometimes he remembers that he came to live with them when the dementia got worse.
But on days when it's all brand new, when he meets Steve for the first time again, he always knows that he's the right one for Eddie. So Eddieâs gonna listen and hang onto Steve with everything heâs got.

The porch lights are all turned off, so the glowing from the pool is the only thing illuminating the back yard, and it looks a little eery with the steaming water and the dark forest surrounding them. A little magical too. Like mystic healing waters in a hidden cave. He could see a mermaid surfacing, taking him with her on a new quest.
Huh. Maybe that would be a nice plot point for the next campaign.
Steve is sitting on the steps that connect the terrace to the pool area of the backyard, his back turned to Eddie. Heâs smoking, judging from the low glow of a cigarette in the dark. Eddie hasnât seen Steve smoke since likeâŠhis first senior year.
His back looks tense and if he heard Eddie opening the door and stepping outside, he doesnât show it. Just keeps staring into the distance, hardly moving, only lifting his hand to his lips and taking a shaky drag of the cigarette. He seems anxious and fidgety and it sort of breaks Eddieâs heart.
He sits down next to him. Doesnât say anything, doesnât look at him, just joins him there and stares into the distance too. Steve finishes his cigarette and stubs it out on the floor next to him.
âYou have really bad memories here.â Eddie states it more than he says it. âUpside Down unrelated.â He turns to look at him. âRight?â
Steve lifts his head a tiny fraction, his jaw tense. He looks over at Eddie. Breathes. Looks away again, breathes some more, eyes glued to the floor. Eddie can see tears forming in his eyes. He can also see Steve desperately trying to hide them, force them back.
It doesnât work.
Then, giving up, Steve just nods.
âYeah,â he says.
Eddie just watches him for a couple seconds, then redirects his gaze to the pool and shrugs. âI donât think we should hang out here then.â
Steve immediately scoffs. âTry telling that to the kids.â
âMaybe you really should,â Eddie says after a pause. Steveâs expression turns a little confused.
âWhat do you mean?â he asks. âI tried. Were you not there?â
âNo, I was,â Eddie confirms. âWhich is how I know that youâre not really the best at standing up for yourself.â
Now Steve actually looks a little offended.
Eddie sighs. âJustâŠLook, I know you canât say no to the little shrimps, but they love you. And if they knew how serious you are about not wanting to hang out here, Iâm sure theyâd stop pestering you about it.â
âWhatâŠwhat do you expect me to tell them, Eddie?â
Eddie shrugs. âHow bout the truth?â
Steve looks at him like he just suggested to paint the moon in a dark shade of pink. âThe truth?â he repeats and scoffs again, a little disbelieving this time. âSure,â he then says, sarcasm dripping from his words. âSure. Next time, Iâll just tell them the truth. Iâll just tell them, in as much detail as possible, about how my father beat me black and blue in every single fucking room of this house and had me scrub my own blood from the banister after he shoved me a little too hard, so, excuse me, if donât want to spend more time than absolutely necessary here." His voice breaks. "But I just havenât saved up enough money to move out because, guess what? Having rich parents isnât all that great when they donât give a shit about you.â
He tried to make it a big sarcastic speech, but heâs crying by the end of it and Eddie just pulls him against his side, holding him tight. Steve sobs into his chest, curling his arms around Eddieâs back, holding onto him and Eddieâs heart breaks more for him. The boy in his arms is so, so broken, and heâs way too good at hiding it.
âWell, maybe not in those words,â he whispers into Steveâs hair and tries to blink his own tears away, that come at the thought of Steve, soft, sweet, loving and caring Steve, being hurt and hurt and hurt again, by his own parents. And nobody being there to stop it, unlike his mother and Wayne were for Eddie.
Steve clings to Eddie and Eddie just presses him closer, wonât let him go until Steve decides to pull away, softly stroking his back, trying his best to give him comfort.
âIâm so sorry you had to go through that, Steve,â he whispers and when Steve actually detaches his head from Eddieâs chest, pulls away a little and looks at him, Eddie canât help but gently cup his face in his right hand and wipe one of the remaining tears away.
âSânot your fault,â Steve whispers and Eddie softly shakes his head.
âNo, I know,â he says. âBut itâs not your fault either.â
Steve takes a deep breath, dodges Eddieâs eyes again.
âI really think you should try talking to them again,â he then tries. Steve immediately turns defensive. âEddie-â
âNo, I just- I mean this is important, you canât-â
âEddie, I canât-â
âYou canât let them just-â
âDonât make me-â
âYou canât rely on Robin to fend for you all the time, I-â
âYes, I can, she would-â
âSteve!â
âNo, Eddie, what?â Steve looks at him, desperate. âI canât do it, what do you- what do you want from me?â
He looks so devastated. Eddie pulls him a little closer with the hand still on his cheek. He looks at him. Bites his lip. âI want you to be alright.â
That seems to shut Steve up.
âI care about you, Steve. I care so much.â His left hand slowly reaches for Steveâs hand, grabs it, squeezes it tentatively. âMaybe...even a little too much.â
Itâs as far into a confession as heâs gonna go, but Steve understands. Eddie knows. His eyes open and honest.
Theyâre just staring at each other. Steve squeezes back.
God, theyâre so close.
âDo you wanna know one of the reasons?â Steve asks, eyes glassy, voice exhausted. Why is he even prettier, when he cries? Itâs unfair to the world but even more unfair to Steve. It shouldnât look good to be in pain.
âReasons?â Eddie frowns.
âWhy my dadâŠâ Steve shrugs. âWellâŠwhy heâŠdid it.â
When Eddie catches onto the words, he softly shakes his head. âThose werenât reasons, Steveâ, he says, his left thumb gently wiping the last remaining tear off of Steveâs cheek. âThose were excuses.â
Steve leans even more into Eddieâs touch and closes his eyes. He sighs. âEither way.â
Eddie waits until Steve opens his eyes again, looking at him expectantly.
âWhy?â
Steve smiles, but itâs still sad. Eddie can see him swallow.
âBecause of this,â Steve whispers, his left hand curling around Eddieâs. âBecause I like kissing boys.â
For whatever reason, Eddie isnât surprised. Not that Steve âlikes kissing boysâ at least. He is surprised, however, at how similar he phrased it. For a second Eddieâs thrown back, to more than five years ago, when he, with tears on his face and an ice pack pressed against his busted lip, confessed to Wayne that maybe the rumors about him werenât that wrong after all. That it wasnât true when they called him gay or a fag, not fully at least, because he liked girls, he kissed one just last week and he enjoyed it, he did, he swore.
âBut I just sort ofâŠlike kissing boys too.â
âEd, my boy,â Wayne told him back then and pulled him into an awkward but warm hug. âThere ainât nothinâ wrong with that.â
âSteve,â Eddie breathes and takes Steveâs face in both of his hands to make him look at him. âThereâs nothing wrong with that.â
Steveâs eyes are still glazed and heâs still so pretty it hurts and he slowly bites down on his lip, which- unfair, if you ask Eddie. So unfair.
âAre you sure?â Steve asks and it seems almost as if heâs not asking about the kissing thing anymore. Well, yes, but in a different context. His gaze falls down onto Eddieâs lips and Eddie has to take a sharp breath.
âOh, Iâve never been more sure of anything,â Eddie replies, his voice barely above a whisper and Steveâs lips pull into a hesitant, soft smile before he shifts a little closer.
âSo youâŠyou wonât mind, if I-â
Heâs cut off by Eddie kissing him. Steve melts into it, one hand coming up to tangle in his hair and pull him closer, the other fisting the fabric of Eddie's shirt. Eddie kisses Steve deeper, softly hums into it and he can feel Steve letting himself go.
Steve feels safe with him, Eddie realizes.
It almost makes him wanna cry.
When they break apart, they just stare at each other for a second. Still close, Eddieâs hands still cupping Steve's face, Steveâs still in Eddieâs curls and shirt.
âThis,â Steve says, a little breathless, which- what? Eddie caused that? âThis is certainly a good memory."

"Still super jealous as hell by the way.â
"Okay, now, can youâŠget outta my face?â Steve annoyedly swats a hand at Eddieâs chest and ducks out of his space.
Eddie sighs and shakes his head. "Why are you-" He purses his lips, thinks. "You donâtâŠyou still donât like me very much, do you?"
At that Steve stops walking, huffs out an annoyed breath and presses his eyes closed. He turns to Eddie, looks at him with an expression Eddie canât read and says, "No, Eddie. No, I donât."
Eddie just watches him for a second, not sure what to do, studies his face, the furrow between his brows, the clear discomfort in his expression.
He scoffs. Getting a little angry. "Jesus, man,â he says. "You just canât get over it, huh? And here I was rambling on about how you were actually a good dude after all, butâŠno, turns out Steve Harrington is still just as much stuck in his stupid high school mindset as I would have thought.â
Steve just looks more annoyed now, a slight shift in his eyebrow andâŠhe looksâŠfrustrated? A little? How does that make sense?
"You,â Steve says, voice low, but not because of the monsters, Eddie knows that much, "are unbelievable.â
Eddie blinks. "What?â
"Eddie, youâre the one who canât get over it,â Steve accuses him. "You always talk about that non-conformist shit and how people should just stop with the categories and drawers and labels but, dude, youâve never judged people that way yourself! I have been saved in your brain as this dumb idiot jock ever since youâve known me andâŠâ Steve huffs out an unbelieving breath. "And Eddie, I donât know what to tell youâŠbut youâve never been nice to me. Ever. And when Lucas made the basketball team, which is amazing, by the way, you werenât proud of him or supported him for that incredible achievement like you should have if heâs really one of your 'little sheepâ.â He draws quotation marks in the air. "You punished him for it. You said you canât make Hellfire? Fuck you. Iâm just gonna have the most important part of the campaign without you, because you know what, you donât deserve us anymore now that youâve joined the dark side. Now that youâve taken up aâŠa jock game. Because god forbid, somebody could actually ever enjoy playing sports.â
Eddie canât follow. His mindâs lagging behind, still stuck on Steve apparently knowing DnD terms and saying he was never nice to him and-
Steve takes another step back.
"Eddie, for as long as I can remember you hated me. And yeah, sure, I was stupid and I did some stupid things, butâŠâ he shrugs one sided. "But I donât think I deserve to be treated that way. I think I at least deserved a chance. And you never gave me one.â
Eddie blinks. "What do you mean I never gave you a chance, I-"
"Biology, sophomore year,â Steve interrupts him. "We were assigned lab partners. I tried to reallyâŠput all of it aside, tried to get to know you, because actually, Eddie, you know what? I was sort of obsessed with you. Because you were soâŠloud and so unashamedly yourself, I admired you so much. You didnât care about anything and you stood up for yourself and thatâs something Iâve never been able to do, my whole life. IâŠâ Steve looks down, sighs a little. "I let people push me around because itâs the only way I feel like I can be of use. But youâŠyou made me believe that maybe actually IâŠcould do it, you know? Like, tell Tommy H. off or somethingâŠâ He looks so hurt. Eddie kind of wants to die. "But youâŠyou acted like it was the worst thing ever, getting partnered with me. You didnât even look at me. YouâŠnever gave me a chance, Eddie. SoâŠsorry if one 'youâre actually a good dude, Harrington' doesnât make me forget all of that, make up for it. Because Iâm not so sure I believe you.â
Oh.
Oh no.
Eddie fucked up.

Itâs Eddieâs first time in Steveâs car which Steve should have known meant Eddie was gonna snoop. But Steve doesnât mind, itâs not like he has any secrets stashed away here anyway (couldnât even if he wanted to, not with how often Hendersonâs sitting right where Eddie is) and Eddieâs one of his best friends (which, yeahâŠstill a little weird sometimes, if heâs being honest. But somewhere in the past couple months Steve&Robin turned into Steve&Robin & Eddie and Steveâs not complaining. Eddieâs great).
So he just happily hums along to Everybody Wants To Rule The World playing from the radio and lets Eddie do his thing.
And Eddieâs enjoying it. Heâs rummaging through the glove compartment, making judgmental or approving sounds, commenting on tapes (âugh, this oneâs a crimeâ) and the gum one of the gremlins probably left there (âgross, Steve, watermelon flavor, are you serious?â). And then,
"DudeâŠseriously?â
His toneâs so blunt and unimpressed that Steve frowns and throws him a glance. And oh, okay. Eddieâs holding up a condom in its shiny silver wrapping.
Steve huffs out a breath, smirks and directs his eyes back at the road. "What, youâve never had sex in a car?â he asks.
"Iâve never had sex, period,â Eddie replies and- just-
What?
Steve blinks. "What?â
Eddie chuckles and thereâs a slight self deprecating tone to it. "Iâve never had sex,â he repeats. And then it sounds like heâs frowning when he adds, "what, does that really surprise you?â
"I meanâŠyeah,â Steve says. "Obviously.â
"Obviously?" Eddie scoffs. "Steve, Iâm Eddie 'The Freak' Munson. Iâm a social outcast, play nerd games and have spent most of my time in a sweaty garage with my honestly not very good band. What about that makes you think Iâm getting laid?â
"No, I just- I meanâŠâ Steve shrugs. "I mean youâre, like, objectively attractive, Eddie. Youâre charming, youâre smart, wittyâŠplus you have that wholeâŠmetalhead aesthetic thing going on,â he waves his right hand in Eddieâs general direction, "Iâm sure girls are into that.â He shrugs again. "Hell, Iâd have sex with you if I was a girl. So yeah. I'm surprised. I thought you were hooking up, like, all the time."
Eddie doesnât say anything for a moment. "Jesus Christ,â he then whispers.
Steve throws him another glance. "What?â
"Nothing, just- oh my god, Steve, thereâs so much to unpack here.â

âWhat in the world are you doing here?â he then asks, when he got his voice back and Steve, now kneeling on the ground sorting through the dirty laundry he brought, just shoots him a look.
âUhhâŠlaundry?â He looks a little lost, as if he doesnât really understand the question.
âUm, yes, I can see that,â Eddie replies, shutting his book, âbut why is Steve Harrington doing laundryâŠhere? At a laundromat?â
Steve frowns and turns completely around, giving Eddie his full attention now. âWell, Eddie Munsonâ he says, putting emphasis on it, as if to prove Eddieâs not the only one who knows full names around here. âThereâs a very simple answer to that. I donât have a washing machineâŠbut I like to wear clean clothes. You know?â
or: Itâs laundry day. Eddie runs into Steve Harrington. Somethingâs not adding up.

Can i just say i LOVE how the fandom has just collectively decided to name Steve's dad Richard. Like, sure, there's a handful fics where he's called something else but in like 95 % it's Richard and it just fits so well, it's crazy.
(It's actually gotten to a point where, when I read a different name, I have to take a moment and understand that it's Steve's dad we're talking about)
(also what's gonna happen if he actually shows up in canon and has a different name??? then what??)
