The month of June is almost to an end and I think it would be hypocritical for me not to post anything in the fight that we are still in. It's really conflicting having the utmost freedom to be and do whatever you wanted basically your entire life (see videos). But then when it comes to the nitty gritty of things you face unacceptance and problems with the same people that fostered your identity and who are working so hard to give a better life to you. I don't even remember asking my parents to study film. The year before, I dropped out of UTT, and had a half a year to think about what I really wanted to do. That decision turned out to be the best 3 years of life. Film school was hard, not because of the objective difficulty of academics, but because it requires you to grow exponentially as a human being in such a short amount time. Tons of reading, learning about world history, feminism, sexuality, philosophy. I simply cannot repay my parents enough for allowing me to go into a field (not that they knew what film was about) that allowed me to learn what it means to be human. I had to unlearn so much shit that I thought i knew about the world. Communication is key when faced with obstacles, but it's a thousand times harder when the people you are trying to change have been bulldozing life in a straight line and had never had the chance to stop and think about anything. I just want you know I'm the same person, a good person. Even if I don't have the same beliefs as you, that's my choice (not yours), and it doesn't help that you have given me the opportunities to find myself and you want to reel me back into a box. I say these things not with anger or angst, but with love and compassion in hopes that one day having to say things like this would be a memory of yesteryear. PS.
