5.16.21 Turku Castle
Turku is a very popular tourist town. However, due to COVID, it is quieter than normal. Even so, you need to make appointments to visit museums due to limited numbers of people allowed entrance at one time. Thanks again, COVID. Luckily, we were able to score the LAST 5 tickets for Turku Castle today! I have to admit, I felt like I won the lottery a little bit.
Each group is only allowed 2 hours in the castle. Although that seemed like a long time for our kids with shorter attention spans, we barely made it out on time. The castle is huge and they let the tourists see lot of it. Additionally, there were many displays and exhibitions to engage the museum-goer.
We didn't hear one complaint about boredom the entire 2 hours we were there. Pretty amazing! If our kids were impressed (and they're tough critics), I think you will like it, too.

On gender fluidity in "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight"
So we know that in this poem, the character of Gawain takes on the challenge of the Green Knight. Well, in doing so, he enters into a realm where traditional gender roles are disrupted.
Remember when Gawain is given a girdle by a Lady? The girdle is said to have magical properties that will protect the wearer from harm. But when Gawain accepts the gift, he is seen as betraying his chivalric code, which forbids knights from accepting gifts from ladies. This moment raises questions about gender roles and power dynamics, as Gawain is forced to choose between maintaining his masculine honor and accepting the aid of a powerful woman.
The character of the Green Knight himself might as well be gender fluid (he is already have some interesting relationship with his body, so who knows?). The Green Knight is described as having both masculine and feminine features. The green color is associated with both fertility and decay. This blurring of gender and sexuality challenges the binary system of gender roles that dominates medieval literature and raises questions about the nature of power and authority.
Let's continue questioning the power and identity!
