Day K
It’s been a long night of studying, diving into “Medieval Crossover: Reading the Secular against the Sacred.” It's fascinating how authors were able to incorporate religious themes into secular stories, and vice versa. The next few hours will be spent with my highlighter and sticky notes, trying to make sense of it all. Wish me luck!

Day 1
I figured I may as well try and lay out what it is that I’m trying to do each study session. There is a lot to unpack in "God and the Goddesses: Vision, Poetry, and Belief in the Middle Ages", and I know that I won’t be able to cover everything in one sitting… however, it doesn’t mean I won’t stop trying. Today I’m focusing on the chapter about female deities and their representation in medieval times. I've also brought some snacks to keep me fueled, and a playlist of Gregorian chants to set the mood.

5.16.21 Turku Castle
Turku is a very popular tourist town. However, due to COVID, it is quieter than normal. Even so, you need to make appointments to visit museums due to limited numbers of people allowed entrance at one time. Thanks again, COVID. Luckily, we were able to score the LAST 5 tickets for Turku Castle today! I have to admit, I felt like I won the lottery a little bit.
Each group is only allowed 2 hours in the castle. Although that seemed like a long time for our kids with shorter attention spans, we barely made it out on time. The castle is huge and they let the tourists see lot of it. Additionally, there were many displays and exhibitions to engage the museum-goer.
We didn't hear one complaint about boredom the entire 2 hours we were there. Pretty amazing! If our kids were impressed (and they're tough critics), I think you will like it, too.

The museum at Söderlångvik Manor, located in the main building, displays Amos Anderson’s art collection and information about his personal history. The museum was opened to the public in 1965 according to the wishes of Amos Anderson (1878–1961). The house underwent a thorough renovation in 2018–2021 when the interiors regained their original style from the 1930s. The interior of Söderlångvik is mostly classic design featuring both antique furniture and retro-style furniture. Most of Amos Anderson’s library is located here.

I have always found the history of medieval Europe to be fascinating, particularly the ways in which religion and literature intersected. It's incredible to think of the powerful role that books and stories played in shaping the beliefs and values of entire societies. I find it humbling and inspiring to contemplate the ways in which art and culture can shape our perceptions of the world. I'd be curious to hear if you have any similar interests or if there are any books or authors that you would recommend exploring. It would be wonderful to hear your thoughts and learn from your insights.

As a queer person raised in a non-religious household but quite the religious community of, the intersection of gender, sexuality, and religion has been a complex and challenging journey for me. Growing up, I struggled to reconcile my identity with the strict roles and expectations for men and women that I was taught in school, as it was in striking contrast with what I have seen at home. Only in my early adulthood, with access to the Internet and different kinds of media did I begin to explore and understand my queer identity, and with it came a reexamination of my faith. It is not always harmonious and, this intersection that I am can lead to a sense of isolation and rejection. But despite the challenges, this journey has taught me the importance of ongoing exploration, introspection, and openness to new perspectives and ideas.

On gender fluidity in "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight"
So we know that in this poem, the character of Gawain takes on the challenge of the Green Knight. Well, in doing so, he enters into a realm where traditional gender roles are disrupted.
Remember when Gawain is given a girdle by a Lady? The girdle is said to have magical properties that will protect the wearer from harm. But when Gawain accepts the gift, he is seen as betraying his chivalric code, which forbids knights from accepting gifts from ladies. This moment raises questions about gender roles and power dynamics, as Gawain is forced to choose between maintaining his masculine honor and accepting the aid of a powerful woman.
The character of the Green Knight himself might as well be gender fluid (he is already have some interesting relationship with his body, so who knows?). The Green Knight is described as having both masculine and feminine features. The green color is associated with both fertility and decay. This blurring of gender and sexuality challenges the binary system of gender roles that dominates medieval literature and raises questions about the nature of power and authority.
Let's continue questioning the power and identity!
