What is high blood pressure (hypertension)
Tumblr media
Blood pressure or arterial blood pressure is the force that is applied to the walls of the arteries, when the heart pumps blood around the body, when the heart muscle contracts, the blood is pumped through the aorta (the largest artery in the human body responsible for distributing oxygen-carrying blood to all parts of the body). around the body).
Blood pressures the walls of the aorta as it passes, and the blood pressure in this case is known as systolic blood pressure, which is the highest number when measuring pressure. Blood returns to the heart, the blood pressure, in this case, is called the diastolic blood pressure, which is the lowest number when measuring pressure.
High blood pressure is one of the most common and dangerous diseases of the heart and blood vessels in the body, and it is called the silent killer, because it causes no symptoms, so the patient may suffer from it for years without knowing it.
Blood pressure measurement
Blood pressure is a measure of the force of the heart to pump blood through the walls of the arteries (blood vessels) in the body, and blood pressure is measured using a manometer containing an inflatable arm placed on the hand and a manometer, or by an electronic blood pressure monitor.
When the blood pressure is 140/90 mm Hg or higher, it is classified as high blood pressure, whether in women or men. If the blood pressure is 120/80 or higher, but less than 140/90, this stage is pre hypertension, in which case it is not classified as a disease but as a developing term chosen to distinguish individuals who have a high-risk factor for the disease. When the blood pressure is more than 160/100 it is called severe hypertension. Malignant hypertension , it is a very severe rise in diastolic blood pressure when it reaches 130 mm Hg.
Blood pressure reading
The pressure device gives a reading in millimeters of mercury, but electronic devices are usually less accurate and need to be adjusted periodically.
The normal pressure reading consists of two numbers:
First or upper: It measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats (systolic pressure).
Second or bottom: It measures the pressure in the arteries between heartbeats (diastolic pressure).
There is a type of high blood pressure known as isolated systolic hypertension. It is when the systolic pressure number is higher than 130 mm Hg, while the diastolic pressure number is less than 80 mm Hg.
This type is more common in the elderly over 65 years of age
