Variety: I interviewed Kieran Culkin, and he said that the boardroom fight was scripted to become physical, and that he and Jeremy Strong never want to rehearse, but because of your pregnancy they wanted to for safety reasons. What was your experience of that? Sarah Snook: Originally, it was meant to be more between Shiv and Kendall who are fighting — potentially pulling a phone out, and throwing it at Kendall, and having it escalate like that. We had a choreography rehearsal between Jeremy and I. And then on the day, I felt good about being able to advocate for myself, going, “Let’s just remember this is a fight scene that we haven’t really properly rehearsed that we’re sort of feeling out with a pregnant woman.” I feel safe, but Jeremy doesn’t like to rehearse, and I’m going to respect that to a point — but I’m not going to keep my mouth shut when I’m pregnant and we’re going into a fight scene. But what ended up happening, which was far more honest and realistic to the scene, is that when Shiv goes to leave, Jeremy grabs my hand. Up until that point we’d rehearsed — but the instinct from Kieran as Kieran as much as it was from Roman is like, “Get your fucking hands off her. She’s pregnant!” And then leaps on him. And so it really made sense, so much more sense, that she would just be like, “Whoa — it is just boys, like wrestling boys. This is again, childhood.” So it ended up being fine in terms of my safety, and much better in terms of the scene.

favourite reveal from the sarah snook interview published today was the fact that jesse armstrong had initially discarded the possibility of a shiv pregnancy plot in the pre-production for season 4. this was because he and the writers are dedicated to the show's realism, that everything should look and feel as real as possible. so they'd tossed the idea out because sarah wearing a fake belly prosthetic would detract from the show's tenet of realism. but when sarah found out she was pregnant about 3 months after shooting had started, Jesse and the writers felt they could write it in because now Shiv being pregnant would look and feel real. They even brought back Lorene Scafaria to shoot the phonecall from Shiv's doctor in Honeymoon States, but Sarah clarifies in the interview that the rest of the episode (including Shiv's fall on the stairs) had been shot before she knew she was pregnant. My favourite quote she says about this whole process is when she describes watching the series like, “Watching this season for me has been fun, because it’s like, ‘Am I pregnant? Am I not pregnant?’” which is just so funny because that's honestly what so many viewers were doing too. I love her so much.

oh, i have all the time in the world to ramble about succession! i think each of the 3 sibs has an "i am free in all the ways you're not" mirror. for Kendall, it's naomi because she's made peace with being the dark horse of her family in a way ken won't. for roman, its tabs aka someone who lives genuinely carefree and comfortable with herself. and for shiv, its nate, someone who actually believes in something. don't get me wrong, nate is guilty of everything shiv's guilty of - cheating, blind ambition, misogyny, etc - but that's what makes him a great mirror. he has lines in the sand. he has a belief in what he wants the world to be which is why he's in politics. shiv's a good political analyst, better than him in some ways, but she doesn't actually believe in anything. she's attracted to nate AND she hates his fucking guts because he's everything she tries to pass herself off as but never can: ambitious, idealistic, and a guy. all the sibs' mirror relationships are my favourites because in all of them, there's a moment where they could join their respective mirrors On The Other Side and be something closer to the person they want to, but they choose to self-sabotage and stay because succ is a tragedy!!! to me, naomi and nate are the most obvious mirror characters. naomi because of [gestures vaguely at all her dialogue with ken] and nate because, i mean- look at this shot its not even subtle!!! literally a mirror!!
