important to note is that the reason hua cheng enjoying xie lian's awful food and not telling him it's bad works is because he's playing along with xie lian's act. xie lian's KNOWS his food is shitty, he is doing it on purpose, because all of it – the chaotic cooking, the inventive names, the godawful taste – reminds him of his mother and he does not want to talk about it, so he just plays carefully oblivious whenever people try to discourage him from cooking and keeps doing it. lying to your partner if their cooking is awful is bad practice, but hua cheng praising xie lian's cooking (not excessively but just enough to be encouraging) is perfect for them, because it lets xie lian just enjoy this moment of feeling close to his mother without needing to be defensive about it. once AGAIN an example of how tgcf takes unhealthy codependent romance tropes and flips them on it's head to make it the most profound shit ever. height of romance. what in the fuck

Hi y'all! I just posted my Hua Chengzu drawing on Twitter! It took me a while to decide whether I'll post it, and here I am!!!

thinking about all of the Featured™️ ghost city citizens - the pig, the rooster, and presumably(?) jian lan - who were hunted by cultivators after taking revenge (or even just defending themselves) against awful people who had hurt them or their loved ones….and then came to ghost city and were protected and defended by hua cheng.

this isn’t the first time the idea of hua cheng being a defender of the downtrodden and abused is mentioned either - at the very beginning of black water arc, when they’re going through the fake list of people that the reverend of empty words has killed, hua cheng jumps in to say “no, that’s wrong, because i killed those people.” and xie lian makes sure to note that all of the people whose deaths he claimed were awful, vicious tyrants and evil people.

and like. of course. in the kiln. the forging of e’ming. the humans he saved. but my point is that is not a one-off moment - it goes to the core of who hua cheng is.

like not only does that say so much about why the ghost city residents love hua cheng so much and are so loyal to him, it shows that he has the kind of reputation where, if you’re being persecuted, you can go to ghost city and hua chengzhu will shelter you. ghost city isn’t a scary place, unless you’re a piece of shit. it’s a safe haven for the victims of the world because hua cheng makes it that way.

TGCF's trailer analysis from a cinematic pov: the narrative voice

What I absolutely love about the trailer of tgcf is how well portrayed Xie Lian's narrative pov is. It's almost as if the viewer is seeing through Xie Lian's eyes, experiencing his feelings.

First we have the Heavenly capital, and it's super noticable how the Gods are introduced with a low angle shot (in fact this type of shot is predominant in the trailer but it's used to create different effects) In this case, these shots emphasize the greatness and superiority of the gods and how they're above everyone else. The viewer feels in awe, but also small and powerless in comparison to them. WHAT'S MORE, Xie Lian is shown kneeling in front of the whole court, in front of the Heavenly Emperor. He does it out of respect, but also out of shame. He is, first and foremost, lowering himself and apologizing for his faults. He IS below the other gods, tense, frowning and apologetic. The atmosphere is almost stifling.

And then we have the Ghost City. Xie Lian's hair is blowing in the wind, giving the sense of freedom. There's wonder in his face. And the same shot that is used to introduce the gods is also used here to show Hua Cheng, but the emotions it stirs are vastly different, because Hua Cheng, just like Jun Wu is sitting at the top of the stairs, but he's smiling, he's welcoming, there's no threatening music in the background.

There is a drastic change even in the score between these two places. Notice how in the first half of the trailer the music is meant to be intimidating and to highlight the inferiority of the audience. On the contrary, and quite ironically, the music in the Ghost City is soft and light, comforting and romantic. It has a soothing effect after the first half. It gives you goosebumps, but in a good way.

And all this reflects Xie Lian's inner feelings and his situation so well. In the Ghost City there's no need for Xie Lian to kneel and apologize. In the Ghost City, next to Hua Cheng, he is free. It is there where Xie Lian feels true awe, not in heaven among the gods.

My schedule became more hectic because of our current remote set-up, which proved to be really difficult for a science instructor like me. In addition, I am on my final stretch of my master's thesis (manuscript revisions, deadlines, thesis defense preparations). I still don't know if I can make it to the deadline of manuscript revisions to be able to defend my thesis this midyear. But, I am still trying my best, despite being sleepless since hmmm... last quarter of last year?

Anyhoo, thank you for still following me and for interacting with me despite my current inactivity on Tumblr, and even if I haven't made any original content for a while.

yes there is a name for this! necrophoresis is a process with social insects where the bodies are taken to a specific location on the outside of ( or within ) the nest - ants tend to keep them all in the same place, and the way an ant is signaled to be "dead" by its other members is through the release of a chemical called oliec acid

theres even been a few experiments where live ants were coated in the same chemical and other ants treated the live ants....exactly as though they were dead and tried dragging them into the pile
