From their first ever meeting, Natsu thought of Lucy as a nice person.
Lucy had such genuine kindness that he wanted to form a team with her. Natsu, who only had Happy for company most of the time, wanted this nice weirdo he just met to form a team with him.
Their first few interactions really make you appreciate how far they’ve come together.
To Natsu, Lucy wasn’t Lucy Heartfilia, or Lucy of Fairy Tail at first sight. It was Lucy the Weirdo who was so Nice that she fed him even if she didn’t know him yet.
Natsu and Lucy’s relationship is so beautiful because you can see how organic it is. Even without Mashima saying it, their friendship is undoubtedly one of the strongest in the guild.
So I’m gonna wait until they get together, because at the end of the day, beneath love and all its glamour lies a strong and unshakable friendship.

The guild cheers loudly, and Reedus calls for a commemorative painting.
“How about a family picture, Happy?” The painter asks, brush already poised to create.
“Aye! Natsu, get your butt over here!” The feline yells.
The dragonslayer grins, taking his place behind Happy. Lucy smiles at them affectionately. Both exceed and fire mage look at her expectantly.
“Well?” Happy .demands.
“What?” Lucy asked self-consciously.
“It’s a family picture, Luce,” Natsu reminds her, smile almost too wide, “what are you doing all the way over there?”
The guild stops celebrating abruptly and Lucy would’ve almost been impressed. Instead, she laughs unsteadily, well aware that every eye is on them three.
“Exactly,” she says, “it’s a family picture.” She worries her bottom lip, no doubt self-conscious about how the guild seems to collectively hold their breath. "
It is.” Happy nods. Natsu nods. The two look at each other before staring expectantly at the blonde mage.
“I’m...” Lucy trails off, also aware that one of the pairs of eyes watching her right now belonged to the youngest Strauss sibling. The one who actually hatched Happy and who spent several years together with him.
“I’m not—I don’t,” Lucy stutters, feeling embarrassment seeping in, and Natsu's smile dims for the slightest bit. He knew Lucy hated it whenever she couldn't find the words to express her feelings—she was a writer, and it pains her whenever she had a hard time stringing words together to convey what she meant.
"It’s a family picture, Lucy!” Another voice chimes in.
Everyone turns to look at Lisanna, the short-haired Strauss sibling smiling merrily at the key-holder mage. “Both mom and dad have to be in the picture!”
Lucy bites her lip, hesitantly taking a step forward. At Lisanna’s encouraging nod, Lucy slowly finds herself beside the dragonslayer with him delicately placing Happy around his neck.

NaLu's current relationship situation
Okay, this is something that's been on my mind lately and if I don't talk about it I think I'm going to explode.
We all know that Natsu and Lucy have a "strange" relationship, they are more than friends but less than lovers, as Mashima said previously. And I want to talk about some changes that have occurred from the original manga to the sequel.
LET'S BEGIN BTCHS
I think we all know that Natsu is NOT as dense as they make him out to be. He may be somewhat inexperienced when it comes to romance but he KNOWS that his situation with Lucy is different compared to any girl he knows.
He becomes possessive and jealous, something that doesn't happen with other girls, only Lucy. If you really didn't know anything about relationships or how intimate many of those moments are, why would you be jealous when other men do it? Natsu knows that what he does with Lucy is close, personal, INTIMATE.
I know some people treat it as a joke but I really do think that Natsu, from the bottom of his being, thinks he is in a relationship with Lucy. And Lucy has a lot to do with this, I think her way of expressing how close Natsu has become to her now and the lack of reaction on her part makes him think that she's okay with it happening.
Lucy no longer reacts aggressively when Natsu does something that only romantic couples do, she has become passive in those situations, timidly asking him to stop, a reaction that in the original manga did not usually happen. She used to be much more authoritarian and firm in these cases, reaching physical violence (the famous Lucy kicks, wich I approve of because god forbid a woman has boundaries smh).
I think this lack of negative reaction on Lucy's part makes Natsu think that he has her consent to do what he does, hence, from his point of view, he is not doing anything wrong. Natsu thinks that Lucy is exclusive to him, since he is exclusive to Lucy.
Lucy has no competition for Natsu's attention. He has no desire to be with another woman or have the type of relationship he has with Lucy with anyone else. Since from Natsu's point of view, they are together (and cheating on Lucy is non-existent in his mind).
But this is different from Lucy's point of view, she thinks that Natsu is not interested in her, she thinks that he is simply too dense to know what his actions mean and she lets it pass as an accident.
I know that communication is non-existent in Fairy Tail but if Lucy doesn't make their relationship clear they will never be able to be something more because Natsu doesn't see the need to talk things out.
