The WPP Library Challenge
If I know one thing about whumpers, it's that they love libraries! And you know what libraries need? More whumpy books. I have a personal goal to get at least one WPP book in one library in every US state in 2024, and I thought it would be fun to make it a group challenge!
We're starting with a blank map. If you request that your local library purchase a WPP book, send in an ask with the state, the book, and whether you requested a paperback or ebook. I'll update the map accordingly. And if you library does make a purchase, let me know too! At the end of the year hopefully we'll have a beautiful, color-coded map of the United States of Whump.

I'm sorry if this has already been answered somewhere, but what's your policy for accepting/rejecting stories that have already appeared on Tumblr?
We'll accept stories that have appeared on Tumblr as long as they aren't fan fiction. And we don't require exclusivity, so if you submit a story to us that you've posted to Tumblr you don't have to take it off your blog.

Behold!!!! The piece that got delayed by my surprise visit to death prevention jail end of last year!
This is my submission to @thewhumpyprintingpress's ABCs of Whump zine!!! It's available for purchase, go check it out :)
I was so excited to participate, and it was such a pleasure :) This piece took a while, and it is right on the edge of my current capabilities as an artist, but it was incredibly fun and rewarding to work on, I'm very proud of how it turned out <3
Featured is my mer shifter boi Pete from my fav project Shifting Phases :) I love him very much and could not resist another oppourtunity to have a work featuring him published.
(I had to scrunch it significantly to get Tumblr to take it ^-^')

A is for Anaesthesia - my art and letter page in the Whump ABCs (@thewhumpyprintingpress)
The art I drew for this was of my ocs Kyle Kindall after an incident, and Yuuki Takahashi trying to offer what soothing and comfort he can - in spite of the fact that neither of them like hospitals.
The Whumpy Printing Press has now published the Whump ABCs zine (from 2nd April 2024), if anyone happens to be interested in it!

Here's a bit of shameless self-promotion! This is the first full-length novel in my Of Vampires and Men series, which is a grimdark-adjacent fantasy set in a world where vampires are the dominant species.

I think self-publishing is great! The biggest difference between self-publishing and working with a vanity press is that with self-publishing you get to keep all your rights and royalties. When you self-publish, you do have to pay money out of pocket for things like cover arts and edits, but you are paying for services. Once that service is delivered, your business is complete and whoever you contracted with to provide that service doesn't get any royalties from the sale of your book.
When you self-publish your book you are the publisher. There are benefits to that (i.e. more freedom, higher royalty percentage) but the downside is that you have to fund everything yourself, not to mention figure out how to publish and market a book.
When your book is published through a vanity press, they are the publisher. Often, your book will be published with typos, poor formatting, a bad cover, and will be priced astronomically high (I've seen a vanity press ebook priced at $30. For a single novel). And with a vanity press, you often have to give up a ton of your rights, even including copyright. So besides being out money, you also have a badly produced book and little to no legal avenue to get your rights back.
(As an aside, serialized fiction apps have been gaining in popularity in the self-publishing community. READ THE FINE PRINT before you publish on a platform. Some of them ask for exclusive irrevocable rights, which basically mean that to post your story on their platform you have to give them the sole right in perpetuity to publish your work. Which means that if you wanted to self-publish your story as a book, you couldn't do that. You also couldn't publish it with a traditional publisher. Check out this article from Writer Beware for more info).
TLDR, self-publishing is a good option, but however you decide to publish review all contracts/terms and conditions carefully.
This is a friendly reminder to never, ever publish your book with a publishing company that charges you to publish with them. That is a vanity press, which makes money by preying on authors. They charge you for editing, formatting, cover art, and more. With most of these companies, you will never seen a cent of any royalties made from sale of your book. A legitimate publishing company only makes money when you make money, they will never charge you to publish with them. If a company approaches you and says "Hey, we'll publish your book, just pay us X amount of money," tell them to go fuck themself and block them.
