I really do love parrots, and I respect deeply the parrot owners that spend so much time and effort to keep their animals happy as best they can--- but to bring it back to a point op made, why not consider pigeons instead? As a bird lover, I’ve got to say that pigeons are just wonderful animals to keep if you’re interested in avian pets!!! I cannot stress enough how much happier you AND your animal would be if you got a PIGEON instead of a parrot.

For starters, on average they’re just far easier to care for and handle. Their diet requirements are easy to meet and they do very well indoors (given the appropriate space of course). And even the more skittish pigeons can be tamed down and be friendly with people. Here’s Mancha, one of my more nervous birds, eating right out of a hand and bein’ an all around sweet pea <3

Mancha also has a crippling gambling addiction. Very relatable, Mancha!

They’re also super social when they get to know and trust you. Pigeons actually have facial recognition and get to know humans as individuals. Isn’t that just neat?? Because they’re so social, they do require love and attention from you, their favorite person, but if you can’t seem to give them enough time-- they do great with other pigeons! Here’s my boy Archie watching horror movies with me on the couch. He’s judging me.

Yet he does so silently. You see, pigeons are naturally very quiet birds. The neighbors don’t yell at me and send angry threats about my birds. They just do it because of all the loud horror movies and Oingo Boingo music videos we both watch until about 5am!

Ohh what’s this? Pigeons aren’t as pretty as parrots and other tropical birds, you say? Move aside naysayers, beautiful gal Yuyu comin’ through!

She is just stunning, a beauty queen, showing off her radiant plumage while gettin’ some sun after a nice bath (pigeons like to keep very clean, btw!). That feeling of jealousy right now? Natural. And pigeons come in all sorts of shapes and colors, just look at Hazel and her very tiny boyfriend, Simon, a diamond dove (good for them, good for them).

And heads turn when people get a glimpse at Archie’s FANTAIL, I mean look at the size of that thing (he thinks he’s hot shit)!

If you’re looking for a great bird, please consider the pigeon! They’re some of the easiest beginner birds to keep, and can make for loving companions if treated right. And on top of that, you can get them for so very little money. There are pigeon rescues out there and a lot of birds in need of homes (if that’s not an option for you, pigeon fanciers often sell their birds for super cheap, like around $10).
