Still obsessed with Arthur Conan Doyle’s letter to Bram Stoker gushing about how wonderful a book Dracula is, but particularly how it makes such a good template for leaving fic comments, so I’m gonna to a BREAKDOWN:
Just say you loved reading it - “I am sure that you will not think it an impertinence if I write to tell you how very much I have enjoyed reading Dracula.”
Comment on a detail of the craft or structure that impressed you - “It is really wonderful how with so much exciting interest over so long a book there is never an anticlimax.“
Comment on how it emotionally affected you - “It holds you from the very start and grows more and more engrossing until it is quite painfully vivid.”
SHARE YOUR BLORBO FEELINGS - “The old Professor is most excellent and so are the two girls.”
Show appreciation for them as an author - “I congratulate you with all my heart for having written so fine a book.”
Next time you don’t know what to say on a fic you enjoyed, just use the ACD method~

Vocabulary in Erotic Fiction: Off the Beaten Path
Recently I saw an interesting set of survey results from the author KJ Scott about vocabulary choices that readers prefer in erotic fiction. The survey included an option for readers to give terms they like that the author didn't include in the survey, and those omitted terms are included in the results. I found this fascinating because as a writer of erotic fanfiction, I like to play around with vocabulary that goes against people's expectations and assumptions, just like these omitted words didn't fall within the universe of erotic words the author was able to imagine.
Let's Talk About Trans Bodies
A bunch of words that readers liked that the author failed to include were terms to describe trans bodies: boyhole and front hole for vagina; dick, cock, and t-dick for clitoris; clitdick and girlcock for penis; and pussy for asshole.
I was not surprised that the author failed to consider these sorts of terms. My experience has been that the great majority of smut fic about trans characters, including on AO3, uses words like cunt/clit/breasts for AFAB people regardless of gender, and words like cock/balls for AMAB people regardless of gender.
Now, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with that choice. There are trans men who are proud to have a pussy, and trans women who are proud to have a dick, and they write trans characters accordingly. I totally get that. However, there are a lot of trans and non-binary people, including myself, who strongly prefer to use vocabulary like "pussy" to describe a trans woman's genitals, and vocabulary like "dick" and "front hole" to describe a trans man's genitals, and our preference is rarely catered to in erotic fiction. In the case of cis authors writing smut about trans characters, I think part of the reason they don't use this sort of vocabulary is because they fail to understand that pussy is a concept.
I'm not joking. I mean it. Pussy is a concept. It is not a concrete anatomical term. The word "pussy" is loaded with all kinds of implications and meanings, and there's no reason that those implications and meanings have to be associated with a vulva. The same goes for cock. Cock is a concept. A penis can be a cock, but sometimes when I get really into a BDSM scene, my flogger is my pain cock. Sex and gender are like that. Trans men can have cocks and trans women can have pussies even if they never have gender affirming surgery.
He Just Lets Any Girl Enlace Him!
When I read the survey results for readers' preferred terms for penetration, I noticed there were some words that I like that neither the author nor the survey-takers seemed to have thought of. And I know why they didn't think of them. Some terms I like are "sink onto" (the survey only had "sink into"), "ride," "swallow," and "envelop," which are all from the perspective of the person using their orifice, not the person doing the penetrating.
There is absolutely no objective reason to think of one end of a penetrative sex act as active and the other as passive. Either partner can be active or passive, no matter which role they're in. Due to sexism, however, there is a pervasive bias in erotic fiction, even queer erotic fiction, toward writing the penetrator as the active agent. This is reflected in the survey results; all of the words for penetration except one ("accept") are active verbs for the penetrator rather than the enveloper. But there's no reason we have to talk about penetrative sex this way.
It all makes me think of a LARP (live action role play) I heard about called "Pretty boys" that's set in a matriarchal society. In the world of this LARP, women (mind that it's a cis-normative game) are considered the agents in sex, and penetrative sex is always described in terms of women enclosing or enlacing men. This results in some pretty amazing lines in character sheets like "Everyone knows that Felix will just let any girl enlace him." My, Felix, what a scandal! I absolutely love this phrasing because it's so different from the usual fare.
