VERANO - Stephen Xavier
By: Irate Specialist
Many hip hop artists these days are all following the same formula for success. Leaning on trap beats with booming 808s as the foundation for their next hit song. However, it becomes clearer every day that Jersey artists are distinguishing themselves as the exception. Stephen Xavier's new album Verano a prime example of the unique creative expression grown from the garden state.
"Stephen Xavier is an artist in every sense of the word," said Xavier. "However, I can get any type of artistic expression out; that's what I try to do."
Tumblr media
This desire to continue expanding his artistic expression even propelled him on the journey of learning how to mix and master his own tracks. Leading him to be able to mix many of the songs on his new album.
Xavier, inspired by the genius sounds of neo-soul artists like Frank Ocean, Erykah Badu, and Lauren Hill, blends harmonic R&B vibes and bars harder than online classes in 2020 to give us Verano. It's Xavier's third project this year; however, it's the one he's been working on the longest, which is clear to see as the project takes you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions while also taking into account our dualistic nature. There are always at least two sides to every story, and Xavier takes the time to explore them multiple times throughout this project.
The song "Glance" also played a significant role in the overall sound of the project. Originally released last year, "Glance" came about after Xavier was getting complaints about not being able to make summer vibes.
Tumblr media
"Before that [Glance] I was told summer vibes were not my strong suit," said Xavier. "When I made 'Glance,' I realized this is a summer vibe right here. Listening to hooks and how easy the song came out I was like, 'let me go with this feel.' Without even thinking about it, I started making more that was built around that song."
"Glance" is a beautiful story about the anxiety from not knowing when that moment will change your life forever will go but still being on the lookout. The honesty of the song plus the instrumental work together to create an authentic vibe. From this lens, it's easy to see why this project is vibealicious from top to bottom.
One other interesting thing about this project is that Xavier explores life's dualities through a few tracks on the project. One of my favorite examples on the project are the songs "That Love Shit" and "That Luv Shit (featuring Jóvon Garlin)." Both beats include the same sample used differently, like how love can be expressed in different ways.
Tumblr media
"I was like, 'these both sample the same track I can connect them somehow,'" said Xavier. "So the fast-paced one when you first initially enter love. So I'm happy talking about the mistakes of the past, but I'm like this [time is] different. Then we go to that Luv shit, and it's the reality. Once the veil lifts and you see the actual thing and realize this is toxic."
Xavier masterfully executes these topics using the beat as a blueprint to build the right vibe from.
On "That Love Shit," produced by Chef Slam, Xavier flexes his talent as a rapper and a singer bringing beautiful melodies and bars to dance on together on this track. Xavier rides the instrumental smoother than a skilled surfer on a wave. Throughout the track, the harmonies help make it clear that he's caught a vibe that you won't mind catching, unlike Corona.
On "That LUV Shit," produced by Dusa, Xavier slows it down to tell you the truth about the love he thought could be real on the earlier track. This deep reflection can be boiled down to Xavier's last bar on the track,
"Yea, you're riding me/ But would you ride for me. The amount of bars throughout this song and this project clarifies that you don't have to sacrifice bars to catch a vibe.
Tumblr media
There are other examples of these polarities on the album as well, but we'd be here all day discussing them because they are that beautiful and meaningful.
However, if you want to know more, you can hear the full breakdown of them on the Music & Mindfulness Podcast. Find the link in @irate_specialist's bio on IG.
Truthfully the way this album comes together to tell these and other fantastic stories showcase an exceptional level of skill.
This is a project that you'll want to play repeatedly, even though summer is over. So please listen to Verano now streaming on all platforms. Also, bump the track "Connect" that joint is fire.

JUICE POTTER & ’Project Potter’ Forthcoming Release
By: Irate Specialist
Rappers these days are always commenting on their drip, and when their music drops, it leaves a lot to be desired. Therefore there is always something satisfying about artists with drip, dropping heat, and making waves. The key to this equation may be having the juice, and local artist Juice Potter has made it clear with previous drops his cup is runneth over. “He is a hard-working guy who’s trying to have fun and bring his people up,” said Potter. This, along with an awareness of the current music scene, gave Potter the inspiration and motivation for his first official mixtape Project Potter coming mid-October.
A wizard in his own right, Potter, makes a conscious effort to bring joy and pain to all his records. Inspired by New Orleans bounce music and the everyday struggles of growing up in the street life, his tracks are like sunshine and rain. “It’s a bit of bounce music mixed with a little pain and mix in some street and melodic and put all that in a blender,” said Potter. “You gonna hear this pain, but you gonna get lit to this pain.” Listening to the tracks like A.R.M and Project Pott, which Potter has streaming on all platforms, really showcase this young word wizard's use of applied alchemy.
After the success of his first hit, Down Bad Potter dropped an ep entitled Potterville featuring the track “A.R.M.” This track became an anthem for those who had a ride or die shorty at their side and has an interesting backstory. You can listen to the story on the Music and Mindfulness Podcast in Irate Specialist’s bio.
instagram
Fast forward to this year. Potter released the single Project Pott as a teaser to his upcoming project. “Project Pott” was inspired by Project Pat and Three 6 Mafia’s Poppin My Collar, and Potter made sure to carry their energy into it as well. “I named it Project Pott because of the way I came on the track,” said Potter. “Project Pott became the song everybody was giving me credit for. So Project Pott began to mean to me [proof] that I built this from the ground up.”  This track is super impressive. Besides this, it is mostly a freestyle. It’s also full of energy and is sure to make you feel ready to turn up regardless of the quarantine blues.
The themes of embracing pain and transmuting it into fun inspired Potter to feel like the time is right for his debut mixtape. ”I built this from the ground up, and I’m still building [so] Project Potter just felt right,” said Potter. “Most of my inspiration came from everyday living. Just real-life inspiration.” These moments Potter mentions are based on the ten tracks that Potter will include on the project, not including an interest peaking bonus track. To illustrate exactly how he captured these moments in the music, Potter introduced me to the song “Sauce,” which will be on the mixtape.
“Sauce” comes from an experience Potter had shopping with his cousin over quarantine. “We were looking at some clothes online, and I’m adding to my cart, thinking that’s cheap, that’s cheap until you look at the cart,” said Potter. “He [Potter’s cousin] was like you ballin? I’m like I don’t care what it cost. This what I want this what Imma get.” The message of ”I don’t care what it cost” stuck with Potter until he heard the instrumental and knew that it was time to make it into some magic. Potter’s knack for catchy hooks and bar heavy flows take this song to the next level and remind you what it’s like to see a wizard do his work. Though it was only one song, if the rest of the project is going to sound similar, there’s no doubt that it has potential to be the soundtrack to your Saturday night.
instagram
Asking Potter what to expect from this upcoming project also shed some light on how Potter intended to have fun making music so listeners can have fun tuning in. “For the niggas ya should expect to nod y’all head, do y’all little dances,” said Potter, “For the females expect to shake your ass.” Looking at Potter’s previous work and listening to the track from the tape, it’s easy to see that “Project Potter” is most certainly going to be a feel-good project in a time where there’s so much that can keep us down.
If you need your proof, I encourage you to check out the hits Potter already has out on streaming platforms and the Music and Mindfulness podcast by Irate Specialist to hear a sneak peek of the track Sauce. Also, make sure to watch out for Juice Potter’s new mixtape Project Potter coming mid-October.

Female Rapper, Kitty Kitty: “All You Need (ft. Method Man)”
By: Natalee Gilbert
New York-based rapstress, Kitty Kitty, uses her lyrical mastery to show other females that self-love is the key to a happier lifestyle. In her songs, you'll hear Kitty Kitty speak about the power of being confident or her personal experiences. Case in point, Kitty, is a rapper that every woman should listen to.
Born Kayla, Kitty Kitty worked at the Federal Express office before starting her career as an entertainer. She first gained traction after doing comedy and short-skits online under the pseudonym, Purel3eauty. Additionally, Kitty had assistance from Daniel Jean.
Her admiration for music drove her to pursue it. In return, she earned a smash-hit called "Made It," which went on to play on Hot 97.
instagram
Now she's set to release an E.P sometime year! However, recently, Kitty Kitty debuted a single called "All You Need (ft. Method Man)."
Kitty Kitty's "All You Need (feat Method Man)" is a remake of his and R&B icon, Mary J. Blige's "All I Need." The only tweak is that "All You Need" carries more drums and upbeat elements.
On "All You Need," Kitty Kitty spits fire over the lush production and tells her man that she refuses to settle for less. In all honestly, she wants someone who’s going to treat her right. Afterward, Kitty explains that she’s willing to go the distance for him if he does the same. "Ride together, die together, everywhere we fly together," she raps. "Us verse them, they can die whenever." As the song goes on, Kitty even unveils, "He knows ima make sure he good even if he not straight." Her cadence is akin to the rap queen, Lil Kim.
Method Man speaks from the male's perspective, saying that he's looking for the same kind of relationship. "I let her hold my jewelry; she holds me down with the jury," he raps. "Just you and me, I hold you down with impunity." Deeper into the track, Method Man reflects on his former relationships before saying that being together only works if it’s a team effort. His tonality remains laid-back and articulate until this very day.
instagram
The visual that's paired with this song sees Kitty and Method Man cruising through the night. That is until the police begin to question them. Shortly after, the clips give viewers snapshots of Kitty conversing with the cops in the interrogation room and spitting hard-hitting rhymes as she dons a sheer, white one-piece.
Next, Method Man rocks a crisp white tee and raps in front of a colorful graffiti wall. The visual then crossovers between Method Man and Kitty's meet up as they both recite his lyrics.

GuessMuzik: The Purge
By: Irate Specialist
Due to the large amount of time that we’ve spent inside during quarantine many people have been coming face to face with the clutter in their environments. This includes both our inner and outer environments and these realizations have led to us purging things that no longer serve us. Many artists are going through the same thing and purging their vaults of music that they’ve had stored for a while. This is essentially how GuessMuzik’s new EP, The Purge came about. It almost makes you thankful for quarantine because without it who knows when these dope tracks would’ve come out.
In every track on the EP, Guess demonstrates his power to capture a particular mood in the music. This leads to the songs on the EP really becoming a musical snapshot of how Guess is feeling in the moment. “When you hear it the objective is to make you feel those same types of emotions that [I had at the moment],” said Guess. “That’s the type of music I enjoy making. It’s passionate, it’s from the heart. For me, there’s nothing better than that.” This passion is seen throughout his discography as every project is meant to provide another piece to a bigger overall story he is telling. So after releasing his album Forever Evol in February, (also well worth a listen or more) The Purge was released and became a bridge between Forever Evol and what’s coming next.
instagram
The passion that Guess draws from to create his music is felt right from The Purge’s first track “Purge.” Besides the fact that this instrumental is produced by the legendary Royce Da 5’9, Guess takes the time on this track to really focus on bars. “I literally got the beat and was like I know I have to do something with this,” said Guess. “It was really just venting my frustrations on things that bother me.” Specifically, things and people who don’t show respect to those on the grind in this music scene. He starts the track off calling out artists like Yelawolf making it harder for white rappers in hip hop. Then uses the rest of the track to give us bars that are more creative than most artists in the mainstream right now.
The next track “Good Enough” is really a message to the woman who will be his future wifey. “It’s not written about anybody I’ve ever met,” said Guess. “It’s just my idea of what the perfect relationship would be.” Everyone has this image in mind and Guess uses this track, produced by 8 Bars and several other talented producers, to illustrate what he’s looking for and explain that he knows that he has growing to do as well. The hook I want to be something so much better than good enough/ I tryna be a better man someone who can love… really embodies the knowledge of one of the most important things in a successful relationship. Relationships can only work if the people in them work on themselves and work together.
instagram
Finally the last track on this project “This Is The Way” is not only one of the best examples of Guess capturing a specific moment on the project, but also is the track that really serves as the bridge between this project and the next. “The whole concept of the song is me waiting that 11 to 12 o’clock hour in my living room waiting for my album to drop,” said Guess. “I had nerves and wasn’t sure if people were gonna dig [Forever Evol].” This was in part due to the way Guess’ previous project was received as well as the hope that his intentions for Forever Evol won’t be misconstrued. After writing almost 120 bars on this one track he decided to cut it down to possibly release it at another time. Still listening this track is like being transported right into that room and feeling Guess’ tension and anticipation.
There’s so much more to this project and if you are interested in learning more check out the Music & Mindfulness podcast episode link in @irate_specialist ‘s bio. Overall Guess’ EP, The Purge really showcases not only his versatility but also his passion for music. There’s a clear difference in artists who put their all into music and those who don’t.
Even though this may have been just a purge for Guess he demonstrates that the passion he has for the craft will never be purged from his spirit. Please go stream The Purge on all platforms and check out Forever Evol too while you’re at it.

Izzy Bee
By: Irate Specialist
As we near the end summer of 2020, we know two things for sure. 1. We still have a long year ahead of us, and 2. Some of the most excellent music of the decade will be made this year.
So many artists have had time to experiment, fine-tune, and expand their sound. These actions are especially true of the artists in New Jersey. Though Jersey continues to be slept on in the rap community, there are artists like Izzy Bee who're still out here making noise forcing people to keep an ear out for Jersey. "I just wanna be able to give back to the community that didn't give anything to me," said Bee.
Growing up in Jersey City, Bee admits to not always walking the right path but still is appreciative of how he's grown due to his experiences. "[I] faced a bunch of challenges and overcame them all," said Bee. "Growing up, I lacked guidance, so I stumbled into some trouble, but as I said, I triumphed, and I found a way."
Inspired by artists like Lil Wayne, Drake, and Future, his way, became expressing the thoughts and feelings he held inside through his music. So his new project Izzup being released the end of the month is clearly Bee tapped into his aggression to bring us some end of summer bangers.
youtube
The first single from Bee's upcoming project has already been released, and it goes by the name of "Twenty2." The track essentially captures the Bee showing haters that he's not on to be messed with because, like a safe sex advocate, he's strapped up. "[The song is] talking about taking that gun everywhere." The banging bass and catchiness of the hook make it easy to have this song stuck in your head. The track also does a great job of illustrating to listeners Bee's confidence, which even starts to rub off on you. If you're looking for a song to turn up to during your post quarantine functions with the crew, this song surely should be on your playlist.
One of the other tracks which will be on the upcoming project is titled "Smoker." This song is another one where Bee highlights times in his life where he wasn't involved in the most positive past times. "It's talking about a point in my life where I was just trapping," Bee continues. "I used to hide the packs in my room and my mom used to be like 'What's that smell?'"
Overall, "Smoker" is a track that many stoners can relate to, especially the inquisitions into the odor in your room. Still, this song is not the typical laid backtrack that you sit with the crew vibe out and smoke to. The upbeat tempo mixed withnBee's vocals and dope bars (no pun intended) make it a track to get lit to while curving the haters, and reminiscing on the good times cheifin' with the crew.
youtube
These tracks, along with others from the project such as "EBK," another super hard track, are filled with confidence and bravado you can feel.
Pure raw energy and confidence are sure to be heard throughout this project, making it the perfect remedy to your quarantine blues.
If you want to learn more about the tracks on the project, including "EBK" check out the Music and Mindfulness Podcast on Spotify. The link is in @irate_specialist's bio. But get ready for another fantastic Jersey artist's incredible work. Izzup will be everywhere this Friday, 7/31. In the meantime, check out Twenty2, which is currently on all platforms. And get hyped for the rest of this project because I know I am.

“Avenue” - Akil B. Strange
By: Natalee Gilbert
Today on The Fresh Finds, we’ll be giving the spotlight to an artist who proficiently merges different genres in hopes of showing audiences worldwide that music can go in any direction: Akil B. Strange.
His newest single, “Avenue,” is a bright song that pushes others to take control of their destiny. The question at hand is, “what avenue are you taking?” For the majority of “Avenue,” listeners will hear electro synths and a strobe light sound recording paired with other lively arrangements. They’ll also come to know that the new jam is a house offering and is akin to a 2000’s Timberland-sque beat.
Tumblr media
Vocally, Akil B. Strange is minimal but still drops a few gems when words escape his lips. One notable piece is his play on a scene from Captain Phillips when actor, Barkhad Adbi says to Tom Hanks, “Look at me. I’m the captain now.”

CALIBER - Shut Up
By: Irate Specialist
2020 has been an exciting year, to say the least. So far, for the first half, the whole world has been fighting a pandemic. This process has brought us face to face with many difficult topics such as mortality, knowledge of self, and the integrity of our governments. Now yet another player has entered the ring demanding to be recognized, and that is police brutality and the value of black lives.
However, this topic is not new to anyone who has learned to identify their skin color as being “black.” Because moving around this country with this skin color, is most often seen as an offensive act to not only our law enforcement system but many citizens in general. So we grow to recognize the color of our skin and the color of the surface of the people around us and often try to start a conversation about the differences in how we are treated when we can. Still, we are often told shut up, in so many words, when expressing ourselves, which leads me to Caliber’s new project, Shut Up.
Caliber uses his music to paint a picture of his reality in the minds of his listeners and bring awareness to the issues that should be discussed. “With my music, I always try to spread a message and enlighten people,” said Caliber. “I want them to leave listening to my stuff knowing something more [and] feeling like they gotta look into something.” For reasons previously highlighted, this isn’t the easiest thing to do, so with this project, not only Caliber was hearing shut up, he was saying it back. “That’s just how I felt on the inside when I was making it,” said Caliber. “I got all these outside stimuli going on and everything that’s happening in the country and everything happening also in my household and community. It was just like shut up.”
Shut Up’s first track, “Paranoise,” wastes no time addressing the main issues rolling around Caliber’s mind. “That’s basically like my thought process,” said Caliber. “Everything is just like a constant train running through my mind.” So the song Paranoise takes us on a trip through the creative mind of a young African American living in the United States. Caliber highlights the injustice in our water, housing, and weed. While also highlighting the point that working your self to death over a piece of paper doesn’t feel much like living.
instagram
From there, Caliber takes a look at our relationship with social media on the song “Screenshot.” The instrumental’s, which he produced, glitchy computer feeling inspired the song’s direction. “I wanted to make the song [feel] like [being] stuck on the computer,” said Caliber. “You know, living in a digital reality just staring at your screen all day. Seeing what everybody else is doing not worried about you’re doing.” The hook goes on to speak on how so many people on the social’s whole goal is to collect followers and be trending. Furthermore, Caliber’s lyrics and the songs mix give it a “mindlessly scrolling through your feed” vibe making the song super impactful.
instagram
The song  “Baloney” is Caliber saying to the people, even though he’s aware of the nonsense that we accept as life in America, he’s still choosing to have fun despite dealing with this baloney. “This isn’t a solemn song, but imma still come around with the real topics,” said Caliber. “One that one I wanted to have fun with it but still convey that we are getting fucked over and [people in power] are trying to fool you.” If you want more information on this project, check out my full interview with Caliber on the Music & Mindfulness Podcast link in @irate_specialist ‘s bio.
Overall, Caliber’s project does a great job of breaking down what it’s like to be a young African American who’s conscious of the lies being told to the country. The more you think about it, the more you realize its a survival tactic. To stay alive in a place that doesn’t value your life, you must question everything and call out the things that don’t make sense. All while dealing with your issues and learning your lessons.
So please take the time to tap into this important project. Shut Up is streaming on all platforms.

GUAPO TANK
By: Natalee Gilbert
"I'm going to change the world with my music. It's going to happen. Whatever is real prospers, and I know it's going to thrive. It's a story that's unfolded beyond God."
This quote is from Guapo Tank's song, "Intro," a monologue that sees the artist speaking about his purpose in music and why he goes so hard to do it.
Guapo Tank is a musician who isn't afraid to explore his feelings. Through song, he often tells a story of pain, growth, and seeing the bigger picture. Still, that doesn't stop him from creating banger-worthy hits. With much sincerity, he expresses his thoughts on recent heartbreaks and the steps he's partaking in to make it in the music industry. Contrary to his name, Guapo Tank is no rapper. He's a projective type of vocalist who carries a register similar to artists like Post Malone and Kanye West on 808's and Heartbreak. "Darkside is your inner demons. It's whatever you're fighting in your life." he says, "I've been through a lot, and I've had my ups and downs, but you always have to fight the dark to see the light."
Guapo Tank's moniker derives from a nickname that he's had most of his life and a massive discovery in 8th grade. "When I started rapping in 8th grade, I always heard rappers talking about getting "guap." well, I thought Guapo was the same thing, but when I took Spanish in 9th grade, I found that out quick. But the name sounded good, so it stuck." he adds.
He started making music following a terrible split. He felt that a massive piece of him had been taken away. And so, he decided to let it all out in the booth. He always freestyled, sang, and listened to music growing up, but the feeling of putting his inner thoughts down and letting people feel how he felt has a feeling like no other. One song he had fun recording was “Waiting For,” because it carries a lot of energy and hype. It also explains the type of individual he is. “I want people to know that I relate to them that they aren't alone." Guapo Tank says. This statement drives him to continue making music, as well.
youtube
"I know the feeling of heartbreak, the feeling like nobody understands what your going through. I've been through it myself. My music relates to a lot of people who have been through pain and hurt, and when someone texts me and tells me how much my music has helped them and how a specific song has saved them, it's the best feeling. It's unexplainable."
Guapo Tank tries daily to stay positive by making beats, spending time with family, writing lyrics, and recording. He tries to keep busy and not get complacent because every day matters. "Some of these artists just flash money and show-off, but nobody knows their stories deep down," he adds. I want to try to break down that barrier for people, and when it's broken down, the game will be different."
Moving forward, Guapo Tank will release a couple more songs and a project. About the album, he hints that the Brightside always comes after the dark. His advice to upcoming artists is not to get discouraged. "Don't get down on yourself or give up. I've given up before, and if I could go back, I wish I never did for a while. I let the hate get to me, and I quit. Block out the hate. Make what you love, do what you want to do, and never let anything stop you."

Mxs Anonymous
By: Irate Specialist
After the recent success of Meg Thee Stallion’s “Savage Remix,” featuring Beyonce and Doja Cat’s “Say So Remix,” featuring Nicki Minaj, landed themselves at the top of the Billboard Top 100 it’s clear that women in rap are taking over the game. Even looking at a local level up and down the East Coast, female rappers are making themselves heard. However, there is one incredibly real storyteller out of Reading, PA, that’s working to be heard, and she goes by Mxs. Anonymous.
“Mxs. Anonymous is a person who represents absolutely everything,” said Anonymous. “You gotta get to feel me [and] I do everything for my city.” Anonymous mixes old school cadences with a little new school flavor to body every track she hops on. Her lyrical abilities also lead her to win a local showcase, indeed crowning her queen of her city. Once you listen to her music, you understand its because the realness and creativity of her bars are so unique. “A lot of my music, you have to press replay to catch everything,” said Anonymous. “Within a lot of my songs, the beat goes hard, but you have to press rewind [or] you’re missing the story. This becomes clearer to understand after you tune in to the Music and Mindfulness Podcast and hear one of her favorite rappers is J Cole.
Drawing from the inspiration that is J Cole and the ability to tap into her emotions to bring out the lyrics, Anonymous brings us tracks like her “Adrenalin Rush” remix. The remix over Twista’s late 90’s track was written entirely in just 15 minutes in the studio. “I was under a desk out of my mind in my emotions, and it came about,” said Anonymous. “All that you heard are true stories.” As Anonymous tells these stories over the instrumental, she channels the flow that Twista had on the original track making it a great homage.
While Anonymous uses remixes to talk her shit and bring the bars, her track “Music on My Mind” paints a picture of the place she was in emotionally at the time. The song comes from the stress of being a single parent, mixing with your child experiencing a world-shattering trauma. “It was a painful time in my life,” said Anonymous “I was so depressed because of the things that were happening to my child.” Luckily her producer EZ Money and a friend from work GG had recorded a hook on the instrumental, leaving Anonymous to fill in the bars with this moving track.
Another meditative song Anonymous has out currently is “Reflect.” As you may have guessed from the name, the track is all about Anonymous reflecting on different periods of her life. In the first verse, she talks about her relationship with her father. Anonymous speaks on how their relationship was strained because he disliked her attitude though she learned it from him. The next two verses are her talking to herself to reflect on what she used to take pleasure in and how it is more about her music. Her most recent track, “Lucid Dreaming,” however, is a return to the old school and features three other dope artists.
You can learn more about this track and all others previously mentioned on the Music and Mindfulness Podcast on Spotify and in @irate_specialist ‘s bio. Listen to all these songs and others on Mxs. Anonymous’ SoundCloud.

DZH
By: Natalee Gilbert
It can often be maddening to hear rappers in the younger age bracket brag about their materialistic goods and ways with women. But thankfully, not all of them lead by that example. One rapper who breaks the stigma of dummed down rhymes is New Jersey's very own, DZH, who often uses his gift of gab to impact the nation positively. Most importantly, he follows the scripture is Proverbs 14:23 when compiling his verses and hooks. It goes, "All hard work leads to profit, but mere talk leads to poverty."
Ultimately, DZH wants his fans and friends to remember that while talking will get you nowhere, putting in the time and effort will. "Each day I have an alarm set at 5:45 am, followed by Nipsey Hussle's "Hussle And Motivate track screaming in my ear," he continues "I'm fine without it, but what gets me going is just figuring out ways to better myself in all aspects of my life. My relationship with The Lord, how I treat others, being the best ideal boyfriend for my future girl, how I can be a better artist, and so forth. I also overthink these things, but that's what keeps me going every day that I wake up."
Founder of ALLGOODFAM RECORDS Collective and LLC, DZH found his moniker back in middle school. When he was rapping for fun, he called himself Trey-Z, but that was only because of his admiration for Jay-Z, who he's still inspired by today. Not so long after, DZH changed his name to T-Skillz. But the pseudonym didn't last long because he grew a disliking it. By the time the musician reached high school, he had decided to change his name to what we know it as now: DZH." Something simple and something easy to remember me as. Plus, it's my initials: D for Dante, Z for Zaran, and H for Henry," he says." I figured that if I wanted to portray my Music about myself, then it'd be best just to be myself." During his freshman year, DZH decided to dedicate his life to the pen and pad as well.
In eighth grade, DZH unveiled that he was indeed writing raps, but he didn't have any way to record himself. That is until he got an iPhone. After he got one, he spends time on Garageband day in and day out. "The reason behind it? I knew I wanted and could be something more than a person with an education and regular 9-to-5," he adds. "Music was my escape. I could drown myself in hours of Music and never get annoyed, so making Music became something I became passionate about." Since then, DZH has worked hard on serving in-depth messages that bring awareness to the world. He's inspired by anything and everybody, including his current job at Whole Foods.
“Sometimes the lyric idea won't be as I thought it'd be or sometimes the record won't hit as hard," DZH says about his creative process "Other days, I'll have a verse written simply by spending time with someone or just by being by myself. These things all vary and are a piece of me." However, when it comes to doing feature records or doing a hook, he feels that it always gets done the quickest.
His advice to other artists is to remain themselves, go with their gut, get paid first for any of the work that you do, and always put the work in. "Make sure you find the right people around you who want to see you win as much as you do and make sure that whatever you're working towards, be sure to invest in it constantly." he continues.
youtube
DZH's music video for "Smile" sees him showing off his pearly whites while donning a black and brown hoodie and icy watch. Contrary to assumptions earlier on, the video doesn't tie in with a message about showing off jewelry or drip. The song is more so an urge towards society to take accountability for their actions. Next, DZH raps from a side view while standing in front of a brick wall. For the duration of the video, viewers will see these scenes alternates.
"One thing I do to stay positive is just to smile," DZH adds. "For a long time, I hated my smile, and I'd hide behind hoodies and photos because I was insecure about how I looked. To this day, I still fight that battle and wonder if I look good enough for myself and others around me. It's healthy to smile and remain cheerful for me because I know how hard it used to be for me mentally. For me, smiling is one of the things I do to remain positive because it's healthy, and I know that sometimes smiling is contagious. I never know who I'll meet, so regardless of the day that person is having, I smile. You never know who needs it."
Between lyrics, DZH speaks on overcoming fear, police brutality, current issues with courtship, how some are quick to look the other way when another person is in danger, and how we can all come together to make a change in the world. Production-wise, "Smile" is nostalgic and carries guitar loops, piano loops, open hi-hats, and a knocking 808. Vocally, DZH uses a laid-back cadence.
Moving forward, DZH plans on releasing an album along with three others that are set to drop once they're finished. He also has more singles on the way, lots of merch, videos, and collaborations. Hey, maybe he'll hop in the booth with New Jersey rap vet, Arsonal. "His pen is wild, and I'm learning more about battle rap too, and I'd love to see him, and I work. He's a legend already."

HailVee:
By: Natalee Gilbert
Self-love is essential, especially when you live in a world full of pessimists and hate. Luckily, HailVee is no stranger to this human necessity as he showcases his high confidence through lyrics and positive affirmations. New Jersey (and North Carolina) based musician, HailVee, wears many hats, including in the rapping and singing field. Aside from this, HailVee is the owner of Swayvy Studios and an engineer.
His moniker stems from Jay-Z's "Rockstar" freestyle when he says, "Fuck Jay-Z y'all should call me sire." For some reason, HailVee thought Jay-Z said, "Hail Jay-Z," so he decided to replace that phrase with HailZVee. "I took the Z out, and I needed one more syllable to rap it on the beat, so I put All HailVee Y'all Should Call Me Sire," he adds.
HailVee gave music his all following college. "I had an apartment in college with four roommates." he continues, "We had a kickback one night that had about 150 people, so when the RA's came in, they took everybody's name down. I got lucky. I had dipped for a few, so there was no record of me being there. Shortly after, I ended up having the apartment to myself, and one of my friends wanted to record in one of the open rooms. Eventually, he ended up leaving the school and his equipment. So my other friends and I ended up recording every day! The music wasn't as great, but it made me who I am today."
In like manner, HailVee says he is self-inspired to make it to the charts. But, not without giving cred to SwayvyGang. The themes in his music see him calling out smack-talkers, who he refers to as, cornballs and lames. Between lyrics, HailVee also boasts about his charming ways, his drip, accomplishments, and how he'll always ride for his loved ones. Not to mention, HailVee often says that he's in his bag and won't ever stop. In short, the musician's styling is between "lit" and "fire." His cadence oscillates between soothing auto-tune, hard raps, and sharp riffs.
youtube
A summary of HailVee's approach to beats can be heard in "NoPen." The song sees HailVee doing a quick comedy skit before delving into his rhymes about his proficiency with the pen. Aside from this, the singer/rapper calls out the "copy-paste" musicians who, as he puts it, think they're better than him. Then, HailVee brings out his humorous side once more to say that they rap that "hoopla" and use the same cadences. Before "NoPen" concludes, HailVee encourages other aspiring rappers to be authentic because that's truly the way to pop. He also continues by saying that the whole song was a freestyle. One notable line goes, "Hard bars, smooth flow, hard nigga, what's his name? HailVee HailVee bout to rearrange the game."
HailVee's overall message in the music is to be authentic. "With the right amount of effort and technique, you'll become whatever you want to become." he says, "My music is about me. It's me speaking on how I want to be the best version of myself and how I'm moving to achieve that."
Moving forward, HailVee will drop a collaborative tape called Hydra with VeryWellOn. After that, he'll be dropping a solo R&B album called RnVee and his very anticipated project, AllHailVee3. This album follows AllHailVee 2.
For the upcomers, HailVee drops this gem for you: "Learn. Learn. Learn. There's no better power than knowing the ins and outs of your craft. More importantly, musically. It's never too late to learn the legalities of it all, either.”

Gemini Genesis:
By: Irate Specialist
In today's hip hop scene, there is a clear over-saturation of music. The production-driven, autotuned new school, has flooded the airwaves with a unique sound that unfortunately puts lyricism on the backburner. However, there are always people around the country fighting to keep the tone of old school lyricism alive, and Gemini Genesis is one of those artists. Hailing from the Garden State, New Jersey, and having a brother who was a rapper all influenced her to grow into the artist she is today. "My brother is five years my elder, so always wanted to be like my brother," said Genesis. "I don't rap about shit I don't live, but I write based on experience and lyrics.
After growing up in the '90s and observing her brother's career, Genesis chooses to pick up the mic and express her feelings to others. The most recent and the most profound manifestation of Genesis penning her pain is her ep Everything I Never Said. The ep tells the story of what feelings she experienced after a breakup. "The way the ep came out is literally how I wrote the songs," said Genesis. "Its crazy cause they say heartbreak and pain make you write better music, and Everything I Never Said was some of the nicest music I've ever made." This is a sentiment you will surely agree with after taking the time to listen to the project.
instagram
It starts with the realness of the track "In My Eyes." The track comes from a place where she is reflecting on the end of the relationship and is coming to terms with the ending. "I wrote the song in the beginning stages when I was hurt about it," said Genesis. It's clear from the hook and the overall tone of the song that Genesis was trying to identify why things when wrong. Another fantastic and super deep track on this project is "House Is Not a Home." In 'House Is Not a Home,' you could hear that pain." said Genesis. "When I sat down to write it, it just poured out." This is clear from the overall raw feel of all of the lyrics. When listening to this song, you hear a story of someone learning what heartbreak feels like and can even be triggered into remembering your own heartbreak story. The rest of the ep continues this tale on how Genesis got an insight into the dark side of love and should be checked out on all streaming platforms.
Though the Everything I Never Said ep contains some of Genesis's most profound work, her song "Set Me Free" has real depth as well. The song is about how Genesis copes with the feeling of being trapped in her relationship at the time. "I had started writing about how I felt trapped," said Genesis. "Nobody would catch that. It's from a relationship cause I didn't specify, but at the same time, it was like I feel the need to be set free." After turning her raw emotions into a powerful track, its no wonder it's one of her most popular songs to date. For a more in-depth break down on this track, you can check out Genesis' Genius page as well as on the Music & Mindfulness podcast, where we go deep into the meaning behind this touching song.
All in all, Jersey's artists, like Gemini Genesis, are continuously pushing the culture forward, telling real stories that elicit real emotion and reflection when heard and still finding time to have fun with it. So make sure to make Gemini Genesis the next addition to your quarantine playlist while streaming her on all platforms. Najir - Commuter
By: Irate Specialist
Since COVID-19 has come and disrupted the status quo for the majority of Americans, most are trying to fight boredom and stay entertained. However, artists are thriving during this time and helping to provide people with entertainment they so desire. New Jersey's artists are some of the most creative out there and are continually dropping content that is drawing attention to how dope we are. One artist who is expertly doing his part to put Jersey on the map is Najir with his debut E.P, Commuter. Najir likes to describe himself as an individual who marches to the sound of his own drum. "I am what I am, and I don't like to do what everyone else is doing. I do what feels right," said Najir.
instagram
His individualistic and creative personality is strongly felt throughout this project as well, making it a great first look it to the mind of this talented artist. He uses a lyrical approach to bring to life stories from his past as well as blow away the competition. However, Najir's main intention is not just to display his lyrical ability, but also songs interesting enough that they keep your attention throughout the track. On Commuter, he does this while using the idea of a commuter to illustrate that he is always on his way to somewhere higher. "I always felt like I had to commute somewhere, so that's a big part of my journey," said Najir. "Me being on my way to something greater than I'm at right now."
This notion all starts with the first track, "This Is Me." On "This Is Me," Najir helps the audience get to know him by breaking down his name. Growing up in Summit, NJ, and having a moniker like Najir caused him to have to endure constant mispronunciations and misuse of his name. So he had to set the record straight let us know who he is through this song. "I'm like yo, if this is going to be my first project, I have to let people know who I am from the jump," said Najir. "So I'm like 'who am I?' Oh, this is me, and I gave it to them like that. You don't take anything to the grave, but your name." So Najir makes sure to let everyone know the struggles in having his name but also the power in it.
The track is a sure-fire hit from this E.P is the track "Can I Call You." This was a Jersey club instrumental produced by a dude in Texas that he held onto for a while. Once he felt the time was right he recorded the track and instantly knew it was a hit. "I dropped it, and people were like 'THIS IS THAT WORK,'" said Najir. This was the sentiment that was heard everywhere the song was promoted. The catchiness of this track comes from the hook. The way Najir uses the bounciness of the instrumental to drill the hook into your head as you bop to it. Plus, Najir makes use of his lyrical ability to tell a dope story of about shorty who he's missing.
instagram
The last track on the E.P is "Rumble in the Garden," where Najir makes it known that Jersey is making noise, and you should be listening. "The rumble in the garden is the things that are going on here. More specifically, the music that's going on," said Najir. "You may not understand, but there's a community here that doesn't get our proper shine." So Najir paints the picture of the movement happening in Jersey by creatively telling our story through goblins, gargoyles, and double entendres.
So If you're looking for some new Jersey talent to take a look into, check out Najir and his E.P Commuter. Also, if you're looking for more information about the ep Najir and I do a full break down on the Music & Mindfulness Podcast, link in @irate_specialist's bio.
In these uncertain times, one thing is certain Jersey music will keep getting better and better by the day, and artists like Najir are leading the way.

Kailyn Lauren: “Things You Do”
By: Natalee Gilbert
R&B songstress, Kailyn Lauren expresses how she feels about a crush in "Things You Do."
Tumblr media
Between lyrics, she highlights the reasons why they've got her so captivated. Although she's been hush-hush about her feelings, Lauren finds herself wanting to break the silence. It's gotten to the point where she's beginning to think about them more than usual. Likewise, Lauren assures her love interest that she's only putting her all into them. She sings in part of the chorus, "You're here when you're not here/My calmness and my fear/So Imma have to let it go/And let you know/That I just can't stop thinkin' about you."
Tumblr media
As the song continues, Lauren explains why its best to tell-all about her deep affection for them, saying that she could potentially miss out if she keeps it a secret. She's ready to fall as long as they promise to catch her. Lauren holds a vocality that slightly resonates to Snoh Alegra. Additionally, Lauren excels at carrying soothing riffs. The beat takes an R&B ballad approach to electrosynths, pianos, steady hi-hats, and enticing xclophone progressions.
